Carleton the cemetery of the stars, Blackpool

Mr H visits 'Carleton Cemetery & Crematorium' hidden away on the outskirts of Blackpool, where many of the Northern stars of yesteryear are buried to take a look at the graves of some familiar names from the past from radio, film and television.

N.B. at 9:25 I should have said "Stanley Mortensen the footballer" (Blackpool 1941 - 1955). Unfortunately I only realised my mistake afterwards when editing. Sack the researcher! Lol. 😉

Hi Leslie, I read somewhere that she also worked in the theatre and with pint sized comedian Jimmy Clitheroe early on in his career. Whilst she was a talented lady with an impressive career in the entertainment industry she will mainly be remembered for playing battle axe 'Ena Sharples' on the cobbles of Coronation Street.

A great video,I was born and brought up in Marton,I have not been 'back home' for a long time.I used to go to Carleton often. I remember Jimmy Clitheroe well,he was a favourite of mine when I was young. This video has made me homesick, but it's made me determine to pay a visit when this lockdown is lifted.Thank you for this walk down memory lane.

Roy, your videos are really interesting and your commentary is one of the main items that makes them so brilliant better than those videos where people ride about from A to B just playing music making them boring.

Hi John, and thanks for the feedback as it's good to know that you and other people enjoy watching my videos. I suppose different people have different styles when making their videos and not everyone is confident at standing in front of a camera and chatting away. Maybe in a parallel universe someone is saying that they prefer background music playing on videos rather than them having a running commentary. Lol. Cheers and all the best. 👍

Hi Garry, for me as a kid John Comer was the first LOTSW cast member to pass away and no disrespect to the actor Jonathan Linsley who later followed him to play his nephew 'Crusher' Milburn (84 - 87) he never quite filled the hole left by John Comer's 'Sid'. Sadly you only realised what a great supporting actor John Comer had been when he was gone and as you say he's very sadly missed.

@@MrHsHotPot You are so right in saying the Crusher character couldnt even come close to filling John's place in LOTSW. My sister was a nurse & once said to John Comer dont I know you ,he was at Blackpool Vic in reception. Jimmy Clithero owned a house 1/2 a mile from where I live . It was a large house eventually converted into a pub/restaurant/night club . This has now been unfortunately demolished, replaced with large houses . Your mini documentarys are great ,keep up the good work .

Violet was a great character so I am defiantly going to visit. If I'd know a few years back I could have done it then as I was in Blackpool. I assume from this video she was cremated, did I miss you saying that?

Very interesting little video. Many thanks. Would I be right in saying that the 'Garden Wall' fellow, inspired the great Les Dawson, who did a similar skit in his act - as I remember ?

  • @MrHsHotPot

    @MrHsHotPot

    3 жыл бұрын

Hi Illuminant, I think Les Dawson openly admitted in many interviews during the talk show heyday that inspiration for his 'Cissie & Ada' sketches with Roy Baraclough were taken from the comedian Norman Evans creation of 'Fanny Lawton' as he admired both Norman Evans and his style of comedy greatly. Les Dawson managed to pull this little bit of plagiarism off brilliantly by being open about it and a bloody good comedian in his own right. Unlike 'The Krankies' who just blatantly stole Jimmy Clitheroe's act, were terrible at it and never gave him any credit or recognition.

True Paul, but the going to strike over nothing mentality in British industry that everyone remembers reached it's peak the 1970's. Anyway it's still a cracking film and John Comer plays a good, if albeit silent part by hardly saying anything throughout the film. Thanks for commenting and all the best. 👍

I'd heard of all of them myself Alan, especially Jimmy Clitheroe and Frank Randall as my Dad likes that style of comedy and has most of the radio shows and films that they did. The only one I hadn't heard of before was 'Arthur Worsley' the ventriloquist but he was classed at the time as being the best in the business apparently. Yes it does seem a bit strange there being three of us now when we are out and about but it's slowly becoming the norm for us, although at times I still have to pinch myself about being a Dad! Lol. 😉

Nice video Roy well done, Just going back to Jimmy Clitheroe (The Clitheroe Kid ), he use to drive a big car and had to put wooden blocks under his feet so he could reach the pedals. He use to live with his mum in Blackpool in a small bungalow. Apparently he was very tight with his money, and never bought a round of drinks. In the radio series The Clitheroe Kid, his best friend was Alfie hall - he also in real life died young and he is also cremated in Carleton cemetery. Another comedian Lenny Bennet from Lucky Ladders TV quiz show, is cremated in Carleton, apparently he was fixing an aerial on his roof, slipped and fell off the roof and died.

Thanks Alan I, glad that you enjoyed the video. Jimmy Clitheroe lived and died on Bispham Road in Blackpool in the bungalow which as you say he shared with his mother. I wonder if the occupants of that bungalow today know of the history of who lived and died there? Reference Lenny Bennett he did die from injuries he sustained during a fall at his home in Blackpool but he later died in hospital having never regained consciousness. Are you not getting confused with Rod Hull of 'Rod Hull & Emu' fame who died when he fell from the roof of his cottage whilst trying to adjust his TV aerial as you describe?

Hi Roy You maybe right regarding Rod Hull. With reference to Jimmy Clitheroe, the only thing that was left after the family sell off was a couple of Panto posters found in the loft by the new owners. There use to be a Cafe in Clitheroe called Jimmy Clitheroe with all his pictures posted on the wall. The cafe owners say he was born in Clitheroe, this is wrong, he was born in Backup in Lancashire, and moved to Blackpool later.

It would seem that Blackpool is the Norths Beverly Hills Neil T, judging from the number of former stars from radio, TV and film who chose to retire and end their days there. The Krankies have stole a living doing a dead mans act, but badly.... They copied his act that much that the first time I heard my Dad listening to some old re runs of 'The Clitheroe Kid' on the radio I thought he was listening to The Krankies!

Hi Depechem0demusic, I was very mindful about both the privacy and respect issue to the people who have passed away and their families or relatives when making this video, however the location and images of the graves featured in this video (with the exception of Arthur Worsley) are already in the public domain. The Carleton Cemetery & Crematorium openly list all of the people featured in this video on their website along with the grave/marker numbers. I made this video as my own tribute to some of the great stars and entertainers from the 40's, 50's and 60's, some of which inspired and influenced the acts of the stars of today. Hopefully I managed to strike a balance between being respectful and being informative.
