Carl Zeiss Jena MC and Silver | Lens Test

When I started to become interested in filming I didn't know the rabbit hole I would eventually fall into... For me its my little creative outlet and feeds a lot of facets, but hopefully provides some inspiration for others.
I hope the footage helps you determine on whether the lenses are interesting for you or not.
In this case I started to look into a lens set that would be interesting for. Well, I grew up in east Berlin. So why not go for the East German version of Zeiss lenses. The MC series is about as old as I am and rather clean in look. Sharp wide open, nice fall off and overall a rather neutral look.
But since I like some focus racking I was looking for a long focus throw. And with 300+ degrees we got that in a nice housing and a solid build.
The silver ones I was aiming for was bringing in more character. I mainly wanted the 35mm, to have a lens with a bit more flares and character I could use for some more fun stuff. Its that, but the 58mm really took the win on that one. Beautiful old lenses. Unfortunately the housing doesn't hold up in temps lower than -15C. Terrible still and that's not just the grease.
The PL conversion was necessary. shooting with L-mount cam, adapting to EF and then to m42 is terrible. way too much movement, in my opinion. But you do you ;)
With the conversion the connection is just rock solid and I surely enjoy shooting way more.

Happy new year 🎉 These Zeiss lenses render beautifully! They definitely have that clean sharp and 3D quality, that they are known for.

Happy New Year to you, too :) I am overall really happy with them. I gotta do more with the silver ones though. the 58 especially of course. it has some harsh spots in the bokeh. but mostly just beautiful.

Wow this was incredibly helpful! I have a shoot coming up, and this is really helping me get the feeling and understand some of the optical strengths and limitations of these lenses. Cheers!

Great video! I’m currently thinking about converting mine to PL mount as well. I know you touched on it in the video, but I was just curious if you sent yours out to get converted?

hej man. yeah, I did send them to Hungary. there is a Facebook link in the description. it's not a straight forward conversion, thus I send them away. do you have the MCs, or which ones do you have?

@@philippbergau5868 What did you pay for the conversion? I have the 35/2.4 and 20/2.8 MC's, and also wonder about doing a PL conversion.

@andrew_nayes the pl mount was about 250€. Plus, all the mods and shipping you're getting up to 400€ per lens. Iron Glass will offer rehousing soon. It'll probably be around 2.500€ per lens.
