Carl did have a smart mouth as a kid and he was pretty rude to his parents. As he grew up, you can see the maturity along with that as well and he wasn’t so rude to Rick. It seems like once Michonne came into their lives. Carl changed.

That's not really the point Rick was making though. It's not about wether or not Heaven is actually real, it's about Carol needing to believe something to find some comfort in a terrible situation and during a difficult time for her, and Carl not realizing what he said had further implications than he considered. Carl basically said Carol would never get to see Sophie and she just doesn't exist anymore which isn't something you say to someone who is freshly grieving their daughter. It's about his lack of empathy or proper discerning of the situation. That's what Rick was trying to teach him

Rick taught Carl to be a man so sad he never grew to actual adulthood he became so mature tho

I always liked how Rick explained how Carl fucked up, not just saying he did. You don’t learn from being told you did the wrong thing, you learn by understanding what u did was wrong

For me it was after they all just lost the prison and he said to Rick "I'd be fine if you died" and then left him. Sure he ended up coming back and changing his mind about that but how pretentious do you have to be to think you could survive on your own in an apocalypse at what 15? He couldn't even kill the one walker in the house he was searching by himself and nearly got bit right then and there. He got lucky and only lost his shoe instead, but how stupid could he have been honestly.
