Carissa (20) is from Arizona in the United States. She's an undergrad in psychology who, earlier this year developed Depersonalization Disorder, triggered by a bad weed experience.
She struggled with the symptoms for about six months. But thankfully, she has since made a complete recovery. And as she wrote to me in a recent email, "I am super passionate about someday helping people in the same situation I was."
In this brand new interview Carissa tells me all about her experience with and recovery from weed-induced Depersonalization Disorder.

I believe that we often attribute too much meaning to DP/DR symptoms that can naturally arise from bad traumas. I think if we can manage basic anxiety and trauma, it will get better. It might be better not to think of it as a special illness. I've had DP/DR for 3 months, and now I'm slowly focusing more on anxiety and the stressful environment around me than DP/DR, trying to address those issues.

I second this, not able mentally to change my environment but it is a blessing having figured out that that is a big part of why i am in this loop.

It’s actually not the issue of trauma itself but the reaction to the trauma/panic attack etc. That’s just my experience. It does not matter what you experienced. Your reaction matters. Some people go through horrific things but have a different - anxious free - reaction and nothing happens. So Jup, it’s the anxiety. 🥹🥰

Don't worry, it doesn't matter what caused it, how long it’s lasted, or whether it’s been 24/7 or episodic, you can always switch DPDR off completely by stopping the anxiety that's causing it 😊 Read this carefully: www.dpmanual.com/articles/back-to-normal-after-depersonalization/

My dp/dr has gotten a lot worse 4 months in after quitting lexapro because it made it worse.

Hey, I actually developed dpdr during a tough withdrawal from Lexapro many years ago and I made a complete recovery. I got dpdr again after a traumatic divorce, and I’m back on lexapro and it’s slowly helping pull me out again. Just know it’s all anxiety no matter how the dpdr developed and you can definitely recover. ❤

Ciao, c'è il manuale acquistabile sul sito tradotto in italiano in cui sono incluse tutte le informazioni di cui hai bisogno. È fatto molto bene e spiega punto per punto quali strategie adottare per iniziare il percorso di guarigione. Se vuoi sapere qualcosa in italiano chiedi pure a me comunque.

Don’t worry, hyperawareness of your visual field (which can cause fear of bright spaces / the sky etc) is super common with DPDR and other anxiety-based conditions. I know it can be frustrating but it's temporary and will fade away and stop as you recover 😊 www.dpmanual.com/articles/does-depersonalization-affect-vision/

Yes, Shaun told about it a lot in previous interviews, it’s a very common symptom to be scared of the vastness of the sky and be afraid to go outside because of that. It will pass, don’t worry, I also had it for a while
