This was very helpful! In the future, I had planned to pay someone to paint my 32' Nantucket Clipper for me, but actually, based on this video, I'm really considering doing it myself. Well, not the actual painting, but the polishing and sealing! Thanks!!!

6 String Player, FYI, I am using a variable speed orbital buffer from Harbor Freight Tool Co. It's a clone to the Porta Cable unit but at 1/4 the cost. It's been doing a good job for me for a long time.

Very interesting video. Have seen that video let year but just a few months ago got a boat (painted) and I am facing the problem of wax build up and the dirty and streak marks sticking to the surface. In the video you mention that. Is it possible to go a bit further in this matter and the paint sealer benefits. Pretty disappointing to have the boat beautiful and full of wax but every month facing this marks hassle. Thanks in advance,

Hey Andy, Great video! I just discovered a few chips on the side of my boat which appear to be on paint. Since I bought the boat used and don’t know if it is paint or gel coat, but based on how it chipped I believe it’s paint. How should I go about these cosmetic repairs on the paint including finding the right paint. Wish I could attach a picture to get more advice. I really want to do the job right and well. The paint appears to be metallic looks like a very dark blue out of the sun but once the sun hits it is like a cosmic blue. Please let me know what you think.

Andy, I see that you corrected the video indicating this application of Perfect-It to Awlcraft. Would you recommend Perfect-It or a similar mild compound / polish over the standard Awlgrip Topcoat G/H line? Does such a product exist for Awlgrip G/H to remove minor surface oxidation? Thanks and stay healthy!

+theislandpackrat Same here. Last year I found that there had been a paint/gel coat repair done to it (even the previous owner didn't realize it). I found the overspray last year. I'd LOVE to have my boat completely re-done, but I bet the cost of doing so would outweigh the value of the boat! :(

+6tring Player I'm using a Fein buffer which is more of a commercial unit, but there are much less expensive units that are more than capable! Buffing is something I do almost everyday, so in my case the price was justified. Most of the time I suggest getting the least expensive variable speed unit you can find :-)

Hej, I enjoyed your videos and thanx a lot for all the good advice. Maybe I may ask a question. i have bought a regal 1900 year 2001. Now you must know that the boat will be 95% in lakes and canals, I live in Sweden and we have a lot of these as you may know :) 5% it will be in salty water. The previous owner sanded the bottom and left it unpainted..... Do not know why he did this....but he said he did this because he took the boat out of the wayer after each trip. Anyway.... I will do this also, and trailer it home after each trip. But it looks not very nice .... at all. Maybe you can giva advice about How to paint this bottom..... So that it is well protected and looks great again. Thanks a lot for your kind assistance Kind regard John Bengtsfors Sweden.

Watched several of these, and they are all great! My project, SailingSudden on Facebook, is a 1980 Tartan Ten. I did a paint ( I like to called it as Marine Coating) job on the hull and deck. I used Interlux Perfections (2 part poly) with using a foam roller only. From what I have read, Interlux says not to polish? Any opinion?

With this paint buffing or sanding will remove the outer protective layer exposing the pigment in the paint. The result will be an area that will not retain the gloss very long and look cloudy.. Unless a paint is designed to be buffed it's generally a bad idea :-/

Awlcare claims to last through "many washes" As a detailer who wants my work to last the longest it can, I stopped using it 15 years ago. Nufinish2000 lasts longer and won't harm the paint. Jescar Powerlock would also work. Fire Glaze by RMP seems to be the longest lasting "wax" also (for more work being involved) on paint, a marine grade ceramic is epic if you keep the boat clean. As for the polishing, should the boat's paint have any haze, use Perfect-it #1, they've changed the formula for their Perfect-it #1 which can finish to the level #3 does. It's called Perfect-it ex ac and if used correctly, can finish to near perfection going from a wool pad to a foam one on paint. If you are dealing with gelcoat in good shape, a wool pad is all you'll need but it it has oxidation, start with the Heavy Cut by 3M and then move to the Perfect-it ex ac. Wash and "wax" As always, great vids.

Hello! I've been watching a fair few of your videos and would like to ask a question that I can't seem to get a relatively straight answer too. Anyway, I'm looking to repaint the cabin interior of my boat and was wondering, what's easiest and yields the best results? I'm willing to sand down and prep, but I'm led to believe it's not always necessary with certain paints. I would, of course, prefer to avoid sanding unless necessary as time during winter and work commitments is a luxury. Ive also been led to believe that some household paints are better then marine and cheaper. The interior is fibreglass and not padded with anything fancy so I'm hoping it will be pretty straight forward. Thanks in advance and, of course, thank you for your videos! Tom

Andy - would you polish a boat with a 15 year old Alwgrip paint job on the hull? I have been using the Alwcare on the paint job each season but it doesn't really bring back a nice shine.

  • @boatworkstoday

+JT S That's kind of a tricky one. Honestly after 15 years it's probably lived it's life so I don't know that there would be a LOT to lose. That being said, I would NOT compound the hull! Make sure to use Perfect-it #3 machine polish (as shown in the video). This won't remove material, but rather only polish the surface. Also, make sure to use the correct foam pad :-) One word of caution, there are a handful of perfect-it products; make sure you're using the #3!! This is very important! Hope it helps ;-)

+PJoreilly- For small areas I've found the best way to touch up is by using an air brush and a small compressor :-) Perfection isn't a paint that should be buffed which makes it a little trickier to blend, but it can be done with some practice!

:-( I can't even get to the paint on the bootom of my hull there are so many dam barnacle circles. I've tried pressure washing and paint scrappers but nothing works I even tried a chisel on some of the flat parts but I'm scared to dig into the fiberglass.
