Thanks for the shout out! I have to admit that I’m surprised with how popular my cut ended up becoming. At the time I made it, I had almost no experience editing videos, my channel was only two months old and I was sitting at around one or two hundred subs, but I’d just been furloughed because of the pandemic and I thought “Hey, this might be a cool project.” Then several months later it just spiked up in views. I’m glad so many people enjoyed it, and I’m glad I helped inspire you and others to take a crack at fan edits of your own. Looking back with what I’ve learned since about editing, I can see how some of my transitions are pretty jarring. I tended to prioritize eliminating “non-book-accurate” material over maintaining scene flow and pacing - I think the only point where I deviated from this mindset was in cutting the Dwarves’ second intro at Beorn’s house, which I did enjoy, and which was book accurate, but hurt the pacing too much IMO. I should also mention that it’s really cool how lenient the rights’ holders are with fan edits of The Hobbit trilogy - most studios aren’t nearly as forgiving of this stuff (_looking at you, Disney_ XD).

I do like that part as well but I believe it ruins the pace of the movie, and repeats information to the audience. One scene I plan on adding is the deleted acorn scene in BotfA when I begin work on V2.0 of my edit. Update: Didn't work out as I thought, I did the exact opposite of what I had said for V2.

I think the M4 Book Edit is the penultimate Hobbit cut I have seen yet. The year he put into it really shows. It was the Cardinal cut that really opened my eyes to fan editing though, but as you were saying, it was rather jarring at times with how he cut it. These cuts have made me really enjoy the Hobbit movies way more than I did the original theatrical versions.

here's my constructive criticism after watching it: The first part of this new and improved cut was very good up until they flee from the goblins. Afterwards it feels like the movie is in a hurry to get through the wolf attack, beorn's house and mirkwood. Some cuts are also a bit jarring still. Another thing was that Thorin hugging bilbo kinda comes out of nowhere and feels very weird. It could have been set up better or just left out. But everything from the begining until they get out of the goblincaves is really well cut and captures the magic of the book very well. The second half was better over all. It had more separate things i would improve, but each one of them weren't that significant on their own. the two most jarring things i noticed were that 1, bard was never forshadowed to have the black arrow in his possestion, so Bain giving it to him came out of nowhere in my opinion. And 2, Kili's death was completely missing. I understand that it would be difficult to include since Tauriel is a big part of it, but nontheless it is a shame to never show Kili die before the funeral scene. Otherwise, this was also a very well made edit overall. Nice work!

Yeah there are many issues and plot wholes that arise when you remove a 1/3rd of the films. Because normally you have the necromancer/azog side plots alongside those but by removing them it quickens the pacing too much. There are many things I need to re look into for V2 but I will see what I can do about the black arrow, but while making it I tried but couldn't fit kili into it without creating more wholes and issues. There are so many things I would love to change but they usually don't mesh well with my goals even if they are more accurate or "cooler"

@@Ravenomics i have actually worked on a fan edit myself (with your version as the backbone) where it is distributed into 14-16 episodes of a series, utilizing chapter names from the book. The hardest thing about the process have been to decide where to end and begin the episodes, and the order of the multiple Smaug-Bilbo-scenes. I did my best to edit Kili's death to exclude Tauriel and instead have knocked out bilbo as the person Kili is sacrificing himself for. It is far from perfect, but i'd rather have something that shows his death than it being completely cut. A question to you; How, if i decide to, would i best be able to post my fan edit for people to watch? Would youtube just take the episodes down?

I've been looking into fan edits for awhile and never got round to watching one. This sounds like it could be the one I'm looking for. Two films seems to make so much sense to me, I've never understood trying to cram it all into a single film. One thing I can't help noticing though is there seems to be an issue with the colour in your edit just from looking at this video. I'm guessing it probably has something to do with using HDR source content into SDR without translating all the colour data properly. I'm no expert though so that's only my vague understanding.

  • @Ravenomics

That is likely the issue, I will need to figure it out as it is outside of my basic understanding of video editing. it also doesn't help that windows broke and I lost all of my saved work so, when I can I will try to address these issues in V2.

My only gripe with this is a technical one. I haven't downloaded the files yet but I just wanted to ask are they encoded in HDR? I ask because in the video, it looks as though they're SDR without the HDR layer applied, giving it a grey de-saturated look.

  • @Ravenomics

In comparison to the Blu-ray release it is entirely possible that it is the difference in the color correction as the UHD is much less saturated and goes for a sharper filmic look.

@@Ravenomics I own both and I can confirm this color loss wasn't the director's intent but rather the removal of the HDR metadata layer during the editing process (since all the color isn't there on the SDR layer of the video, meaning the HDR layer either has to be left intact for HDR displays or downsampled to SDR) unless the workflow was completed in HDR. If you go to a site like Caps-a-holic, you can see A/B comparisons of the blu ray version and what the 4K should look like with it's HDR downsampled to SDR.

I just finished An Unexpected Journey, and I thought it was great! It cut out so much that was unnecessary. If you're open to suggestions, I have a couple. A minor detail, but I would personally leave in the stone giants, since they're in the book. Toward the end, I would leave in the thrush's flight to the mountain and Smaug waking up, then cut to Bilbo watching Beorn in the mountains. It was jarring to see the bird start flying toward the mountain, then cutting to black and having the "days later" card. It might work better to see Smaug stir and open his eye, then cut to Bilbo watching Beorn. The ending of the first disc could be rethought as well. I would cut it at the closing of the woodland elf gate. It seems more final.

  • @Ravenomics

Thank you for your advice. My edit I don't particularly focus of accuracy, but one thing I do remember is that the stone giants were just related to stone trolls and not mountainous pillars of rock as depicted in the movies. While I think that would be good to leave more in I might need to do color correction as Smaug's appearance is slightly different between the movies. I tried a few different ways to cut it in half, but I have a few things in mind for V.2
