Cardigan Welsh Corgi vs Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Corgi dogs are certainly one of the most popular breeds today. Alongside their unusual appearance, Queen Elizabeth II's fondness of the breed has made these dogs go from being humble shepherd dogs, to members of canine royalty.
There are two types of corgi dogs: the Pembroke Welsh corgi and the Cardigan Welsh corgi. Although they have a remarkable physical resemblance to one another, there are some features that can help us differentiate them. If you're a lover of the race you cannot miss this new video of ExpertoAnimal, where we will explain several facts and traits of these two British breeds. Discover, the history, characteristics or care requirements of corgi dogs. Don't forget to comment and share your thoughts!

I always melt when I see a corgi. When my twin brother and I were turning 1 year of age, my grandfather had cattle shipped from Texas to a community in Alberta, Canada. On one of the railcars, a corgi gave birth to a litter. In my grandfather's wisdom, he felt that my brother and I should not grow up without having a dog. Hence, my mom and dad were given a corgi as a present for our birthdays. You can't imagine their confusion knowing not only are we going to have to poddy train their kids but knowing they we looking at having to train this little puppy as well. They named him "Texas" and we called him Tex for short. As a kid I remember there were times when our dad would give us a licking because of our behavior and Tex would bite at my dad's ankles to protect my brother and me. I'm serious. He was our dog. In the 60's there were gasoline commercials and when one ad ended with the phrase, "Trust Texaco", I remember our dog running to the TV thinking his name was called. God love a Corgi. Respectfully. . . Darryl and his twin brother Dwayne

My family has had four Cardigans over the years. Our first lived to be 14, my two now (who are littermates) turn 13 next month, and my parents just got a puppy who is 8 months. They are a wonderful, wonderful breed, but definitely benefit from obedience training and a lot of exercise. They shed like mad. You’ll never find a more loyal dog.

Love my Pembroke, who is now 14. She is sweet, very smart, very demanding (but easily understood). She has had some expensive health issues, however. Had to have her inner eyelashes removed twice from one eye (at $1700 a pop) and she almost became paralyzed from back problems due to jumping up on the sofa and bed. We had to stop the jumping and crate her for a month until it healed (likely a disc problem), taking her out only to pee etc., and gradually starting to walk again.

Canine NutitionistI whole heartedly agree. It's not enough to apply this stupidly just to sheepdog and cow-herding dogs. Fortunately, my niece and nephews Great Dane, Thor, was allowed to keep his tail and ears floppy. Same should be said for other dogs. I don't hear about people doing this to cats or any other animal-and if they do, to stop! I can't say enough and didn't mean to leave the other dogs out!

If I were to get a Corgi, which one should I get? My mother wanted one and I've had Border Collies instead. While I love the Border Collie, I may not always be able to have one and have to get a smaller dog. I like the tail in a Cardigan more, but does it matter? Is one nippier than the other? ( I read that the Queen's dogs are rather nippy, but so are Dachshunds and Chihuahuas. My Border Collies are not so aggressive). Is one more expensive to buy than the other and must I have to get them registered with the AKC? My Border'Collies are not and I prefer it that way. I don't plan to show or mate my dog or bitch to go along with their demands. I'd like to hear from owners who've had both to know what to do on the future. If I have to get a smaller dog, I would like to get a Corgi, even adopt one.

I got my Cardigan Corgi when she was 9 and untrained. She barks when she is excited so it is very difficult to have her play with other dogs since she barks a lot then and the neighbors next to the park actually come out and complain. It was easy to train her not to bark indoors but not possible out of doors. It took about a year and a half to completely train her off leash because she is so submissive I had to be super gentle. I had a Corski before and they were the best. They didn't bark because of the Husky in them but had the wonderful temperament of the corgi.

If you love Border Collie's, I'd for sure recommend you take a look at some Mini Australian Shepherds!! We have 2 'Aussies' currently. Previously we had a full sized Aussie and we loved her to pieces. But when we knew she would be leaving us fairly soon, and to help her be interested in play, we got the 'runt' of a litter of full sized Aussies, and she's turned out to be about 2/3 as large as a small standard size. After Hannah (our 1st Aussie) passed, I began looking for a Mini, for much the same reasons you might want/need a smaller dog. My back is slowly but surely giving out, and as much as I love the temperament of Aussies, I knew I had to have a smaller dog. Now Muffin (our 2nd) and Amber (our 3rd) are very happy and close enough in size to play well together. Ever since I bred and showed dogs when I was quite a bit younger, I've felt that 2 dogs (or cats) often work out better for everyone. Aussies can be very active, even the Mini's, so they can help each other work off the energy, and when needed, inside without much fuss. They often sleep together, eat with no complaints together, etc. Good luck if you search for a Mini, since I know there are more breeders of them on the mainland, while we live in Hawaii, but got lucky. Btw, Border Collies and Aussies often have a very similar personality - lovely dogs!

I work at a farm supply store where one of the ladies raises Pembroke . I got one of her pups and I highly recommend this breed to those that are into hearding dogs . They will push hard so not a good dog for sheep but are smart at working out problems while hearding . Mine is called Pi and untill she lost her baby teeth would chew everything she could get her teeth into so keep your cords up and no plastic toys . Noise makers keep them going for hours. Be ready to take them to the park twice a day with lots of room to run . I would go home dead beat while she is still ready to go . Pi loves swimming and is very vocal but rearly barks . She does let me know when she wants something with little noises she makes . She loves to wrestle and will never let you be so I dont recommend you get that started . She will chase a ball for an hour and want more and we go for an hour walk through town with out a hitch and be ready for more as well . If you dont think you can keep up with one get two , they can ware each other down . Oh yea , it is nothing for me to walk through the door and have Pi fly into my arms to say hi , nothing I taught her she just does it . Dont over feed them . It is easy to have a fat Corgy . Pi has never been nippy towards people and loves anyone that will give her attention . Pi knows her boundaries , she is allowed in the kitchen and bedroom but not the living room , to many cords , and respects the rules . Not a dog for the elderly but one to keep you active .

The information can be researched. Did you not hear that in 1934 it was decided that they should be judged as two separate breeds? I find it interesting that you challenged the statements made in the video, which referenced a verifiable date and event, while you provided nothing to support your assertions. In Mathematics, this is called, show your work. Or, how did you get to that answer?

Do any history research and you will find in both pembroke and cardigan lineage they do NOT have a common ancestor of dog 🤷🏼‍♀️ find any responsible breeder (ie genetic testing, breeds for temperament not for color, breeds for workability as well as functionality) of both and they will tell you the same.

The dog used in the thumbnail isn't even a purebred. Pembrokes don't have blue eyes, ever. They also are born with tails, at least most of them are. Breeders will dock their tails at birth because the breed standard in several countries call for it. If you want a pem with a tail just ask the breeder to not dock your puppy's tail.

Do they howl like Border Collies? Do they have a tendency to herd you around? My girls like to do that, but I'm used to it. My Gypsy likes to herd me to the bathroom at night-to make sure I make it there in time. She also tells me to check my sugar then and herds me to my meter my sugar is high and to the kitchen if it's low. I want to get another puppy before she pass on her knowledge like my Tess did to her before she died at 16 in '08.

You would likely find those same qualities in a Corgi. They are wonderful dogs and wicked smart. Be warned that they do need exercise and will shed like crazy. My boy never howled but he did "talk" to me all the time. Mine did not have overt herding behavior but he would race me to the bathroom. He would also tackle my daughter when she was younger - but only if she ran in the house. If you are truly looking for a rescue you might want to contact all of your local shelters and Corgi rescues. These dogs are almost never given up but when they are they are adopted in record speed. I've had all types of different dogs over the years but I miss my Corgi the most. I had a Pembroke and I miss that stumper like crazy.

The name corgi from the Welsh 'cor' a temporary cattle enclosure and 'ci ' the Welsh for dog. They were bred to be cattle droving dogs with short legs to avoid being kicked when they nipped the cattle's legs.to drive them along.Good Welsh names for corgis are Sian ,Anwen Rhiannon or Dilys.or maybe even Sioned. The worst thing you can do to a corgi is give it an English name.like Elisabeth ..it won't thank you!!ha ha.

Pembrokes should never have a blue eye. That is a sign of breed contamination.

Dogs should have tails, humans have no right to disfigure these dogs. Tails are used for communication.

I agree. I have had 5 Pembrokes. After the first one I came to this realization and I swore I wouldn’t take another one without a tail. But the rescues keep coming without a tail...someday one will come to me that is full. I know if I was born with a tail and someone stole it I would be so angry.

Blue Meow Than y u say u have a cute cardigan?? I have a pembroke but I didn't want one because it was cute I wanted a dog with a big body and small legs then I searched and I researched about both breeds but I chose pembroke because I wanted the coat color tri color.I like both breeds. :) I recommend both breeds would be best for a experienced owner.

Maria & Zuleykah Martinez i got cardigan because it's quite small but not too small. Corgi has good fur and it doesn't get cold so easily when outside has -20celsius. And I wanted active dog because I like running and things like that. From corgis I chose cardigan because I liked more cardigans nature. It sounded like more stubborn and it felt like my dog. Ofcourse corgis are cute too, especially cardigans for my eyes, but it's not the reason I got one.
