I have a 3 year old corgi named Gizmo, and he's the reason I get out of bed in the morning. He's just the best dog for me, and I'm so glad we found each other.

@@emilysamoliuk8712 I don't know about all Corgis, but my Moxie, who is 10 1/2 years old has never had a sensitive stomach and eats anything and everything she can get her little mouth on. One time she was accidentally locked in one of my horses stall. Like most animals she said " Yeah, a smorgasbord and ate horse poop ( don't know how much, since the stall hadn't been cleaned yet). That night she just kept having explosive diarrhea in her crate. The smell was horrible and woke me up from a dead sleep. What a mess. I understand that the cat litter box also entices dogs too. Other than that no stomach problems. I hope that helps you.

I have owned Corgis for many years. We are on our 3rd and 4th right now. I don’t think there is a typical Corgi. Some are more energetic and some like to hang around the house. They have been a great joy to us, dog hair and all!

We essentially adopted a pet store corgi. She was diagnosed with dysplasia as a puppy. Her first vet, a psycho, told us we should put her down. We didn't, and she made it 11 years showing very few signs of it. Then her hips deteriorated quickly, to the point she couldn't fight through it anymore. We bought her a little wheelchair and darned if she didn't hang on another year and a half. I never would have bought a pet store puppy to begin with, but, in the event I needed a reminder as to why that is a bad idea, she was it.

Corgis are extremely smart and while they love attention, they can learn to amuse themselves. My beloved Pretzel (gone now for quite a few years) learned to be alone for several hours a day and even made up his own games with his toys. I would catch him pushing and barking at his ball as he chased it, and he'd "hide" some of his toys and then go looking for them. I wish I had a video camera back then to capture what he did while I was at work.

I've had two sister Corgis and a German Shepherd/Corgi mix. All are wonderful dogs. My girls were mostly quiet. They are very good watch dogs and bark if necessary. The mix came from a customer who passed away. His son remembered how I'd played with her when ever I was there and called me. I took her in a heart beat. She went everywhere with us, never boarded and followed us everywhere around the house and yard. We have `1/2 acre so there's room to play. She passed 7 years later from Cancer. She trained us to turn the lights on for her as her cataracts grew worse. Her routine was to go out before bed in the back yard, get her NUB and then go to bed upstairs whether we were going or not. She started barking at the foot of the stairs one night and the next few nights. We'd turn on the light on and she's go up. She'd solved the problem. We played a lot of Frisbee. I always had two of them because she would not let you have the one she'd chased until you threw another one. Then she'd drop it chase it. I knew she was getting old when she'd chase it once or twice and then take it to the front porch instead of bringing it to me. The two sisters area strange mix. One was regular sized but her sister was smaller by about 1/3. She has a more pointed face like a fox. The bigger one, Lizzie passed from Cancer two months shy of 12 years. Maggie turned 13 this month. She had gone blind in one eye and the other has weakened some. She gets around fine, still patrols the back yard fence line a couple of times a day but no longer chases the chipmunks. She goes upstairs with me at night but then comes down and sleeps on the ceramic tile floor in front of the door. In the morning she goes up when I come down and comes back down with my wife. All the girls rode nicely on trips. They would lie on the floor behind us and sleep. We never heard a sound from them until we stopped for a break. We are supporters of North Shore Animal League and will look there for an older Corgi when Maggie is gone. North Shore will take in dogs from people who can't care for them any more and will keep them there or try to put them out for adoption. They also do animal rescues in emergencies. They went and picked up as many dogs as possible during and after Katrina and held them for people until they had re-established themselves or took them in. They are a no kill shelter and have been around for decades. Consider supporting them.

Thank you for letting people know the challenges of corgi ownership. After having 2 corgis myself, I found your assessment to be spot on! For me the joy they bring into your life out weighed any inconveniences. A corgi lover from California.

We had a corgi named Rocket. He was 13 when he died. Every thing you mentioned is so true. He was a great dog and we miss him. With all the ins and outs of having a corgi, we would always cherish the little guy and his quirky ways! 16:37

Thank you for your informative video, which offers great info and tips especially for someone who's never owned a Corgi before! One additional thing -- Corgis are capable of problem solving and critical thinking, sometimes in ways you'd rather they not do. They're very capable of "connecting the dots" for behaviors that you never actually taught. Say they know that bringing you a ball will likely result in a treat and a game of fetch. My Corgis began bringing me ANYTHING that landed on the floor. A comb. My glasses. A leaf. A piece of mulch. A small box of books. An envelope -- you name it! So, they in essence have taught themselves to be service dogs. Now I can point to anything on the floor or in the yard and say "Get it!" and if they can identify it as "not belonging" they can't retrieve it fast enough! Even if I don't say anything, just for fun they'll bring whatever they might find -- they're guessing I just might be wanting that object. They truly are always looking for a job to do. In fairness, they're both well trained and competing in AKC Rally and Obedience and have a variety of titles. But the long and short of it is...they're always, ALWAYS thinking. :)

The first time I ever saw a PW Corgi was about 25 years ago. The farmer had two of them and they were 'outside' dogs. I thought I'd love to own one. I live on a farm in Iowa. My farm neighbor who is a breeder caught wind that my dog had been killed by a fox poacher 4 years previous. My YT channel has a slideshow of him and I still bawl when I watch it or even think about him. Anyway, he visited one day and said he had a puppy for me if I wanted it. A Corgi!!! Shorty is just over 3 years old now and has become my BFF. He runs free all day long but never ventures near the road. He has two 'outside' cat girlfriends, the rest of the cats hate him as do their kittens, currently lots and lots of little ferocious kittens. I asked the breeder why he was giving me a purebred dog. He said it'd be hard to sell as it has too much white fur (in his mane) and an overbite. No, he's PERFECT to me! I built an insulated Corgi house and put in cushions for a bed. Bad idea as he tore them to pieces. I used to raise pigs and bedded them with oat straw so that's his bed now and with a low doghouse roof he stays warm in winter. I let him in the house on really hot days, like today @ 90F and no wind so we can suffer together with no A/C, lol. At night he's locked down on my porch because I worry a fox or raccoon might kill him.......or even that PTSD fox poacher. Shorty lives to play fetch even though he has 3 sore legs, that I'm worried about. He goes just about everywhere with me in the pickup but sadly there's no room for him in the tractor cab. I prefer my dog over ANY (every) human.

Corgis have been my nr one fav breed , i absolutely love them, although I've never seen one in real life ever..... 🥺

We had a beagle corgi rescue dog for years. Dodger was more corgi than beagle and he was my Velcro dog. Dodger loved to herd our other two rescues. Such an entertainer, and so very talkative. The sploot was the best.

I have the same, I've always owned beagles and when I found this dog 🐕 that horrible people who let out a 8 week puppy in no man's land. She is 4, I love this dog so much and I'm sure you love your dog to.

My wife and I got a corgi thru a breeder a year and a half ago and our little Remi is an absolutely beautiful dog and very smart!!! We just got another from the same breeder a month ago and our little Ruby is just as smart and Beautiful. Ruby is learning from Remi and it’s awesome! The little grunts for attention are so cute. Our 2 Corgis are Tri-Colors and have the same father. If you have a carpet then get a good vacuum. Corgis are also very loyal and protective of those in their home.

Reason number two made me laugh because it is so true!!! My Corgi is so stubborn!! And definitely only listens when she wants too! She is lucky she’s super cute!!!

Thank you so much for your informative and fun video! With the exception of your comments about hip dysplasia and short legs, all the personality traits you mentioned are oh so common to Australian Shepherds! I’ve had two Aussies and your comments about loving to be chased and minding when it suits them sound so familiar. They’re so easily trained because they’re so intelligent but they can be very single minded. It really made me smile to hear this, especially because I’m about to get a Corgi puppy! I guess I’m in for a fun training experience once again!

If you are contemplating adding a Corgi to your family please do research on both the Pembroke and Cardigan. There ARE personality differences as well as physical differences. A dog is a lifetime commitment so please make sure you pick the right one for you 💓🐾

Yes I agree with you. I thought I would never want a dog shedding in the house or on me. But after you have one it doesn't matter anymore. My car is the dog car, has dog hair all over. My wife's car try to keep our dog out of it. so it's not full of hair. I live in a house so I don't have to worry about her barking. I actually appreciate it because she serves as a good Watchdog. never someone's coming around.

What an awesome and honest video, born out of love of the breed. I am watching Corgi videos cause I am fostering an "Auggie" and on the verge of signing on the dotted line. He is turning 3 in February. Apparently he was mainly kept outdoors but would dig out and escape and they eventually brought him to the shelter in desperation. I will not be keeping him outdoors so I hope he will become his best self. I just got him last Thursday afternoon and today is Sunday evening. So far he's been really scared and acts like I'm going to reprimand him whenever I approach him. He's doing better but I wonder how long it will take him to become confidant in me, if he ever will. He's pretty shut-down. He just started to play with my other dog this afternoon, so I'm so thankful for that ! He's so cuddly and is close to me most of the time when we're relaxing. A bit clingy when he's feeling insecure and licking me too much but I don't let him do that for long. For one, I can't stand that and for another thing, I don't think that's a good state of mind for him to be in. I'm making great strides in housebreaking him, which was initially looking pretty hopeless. I discovered that I just had to take him for short walks so he could get enough of his urine out, one little squirt at a time. I am not accustomed to boy dogs at. all. He is freshly neutered too. My female dog will just squat once and be done peeing. So I will probably stick around your channel if you have more helpful videos on Corgis. I can only hope that it being mixed with an Australian Shepherd, it might be better for long-range health projections that you said are predominant in the breed. Thanks so much! I recently just got my new corgi he’s a little older not too much he’s super hyper and I take him out a lot but he’s pretty chill he likes to lay down a lot but does get random outbursts haha and when he hears the leash he goes crazy

I have a 4-month-old male Pembroke Welch Corgi, he is very smart, trains easily, and he's motivated by treats. If I want him to drop something that he should not have he is running from me, I say "Henry do you want a treat?" Then he drops it for the treat. I got him from a breeder in Brunswick GA. But I love him, and I am trying to teach him to not jump on my sofa. Thank you for sharing!

Most of your points also apply to Cardigan Corgis too. They tend to shed twice a year for six months each time. 🤣

I have a 12 year old chihuahua corgi mix and he is definitely a dog with a mind of his own. He'll listen to me about 40% of the time, but he always acknowledges me at least. Usually if I ask him to do something he doesn't want to he groans stomps his foot and goes back to whatever he was doing. I've only had him for a couple of years so I never had to deal with the high energy part of his life, instead im just his happy retirement home. Since he's a mixed breed he also isnt as prone to a lot of health issues, he's still very long but has normal length legs and is still very healthy for his age. That's the one thing that i wish more people would consider, so many people want a pure bred dog for the look, but often mixed breeds are much healthier and typically live longer.

the solution I have found with the recalling and the pup getting close and running off again is that i have a 15 meter long leach attached to him and i let go of it so he can run freely but if he starts running around me and i cant grab him i have a higher chance of grabbing the leach and reel him in hahaha! I feel more in control that way and that it is safer for him as well! Love the video tho! a lot of the cons is also some quirks that are adorable at times, like the stubborness and playfullness they have- unless you are in a hurry and they start acting up hahaha

Very glad you posted this since they are so popular now. I have had 5, 2 Cardis, 3 Pems from 1988-2021. What you said is true of both types of Corgis. People used to ask me if they are good with kids. They are best with older kids because of them wanting to herd kids and tripping them. Mine would body slam the back of your legs when running. My 2 Cardis were better with kids all around. Also, 2 of my Corgis, the 2 male Pems were not comfortable around very small kids, but fine with older kids. I live in the south and Corgis in hot weather can have skin issues. 2 of mine did. Thanks for posting this. They are great dogs with the right owners.

I am a proud owner of a 10 months old cardigan corgi girl. She is a handful, let me tell you. :D Tests my patience quite often. But she's also a wonderful dog and in the face of how much I love her, the minor inconveniences don't seem so bad.

I had a corgi husky mix, which you would think would be a horrible mix as far as things like energy and noise levels go, but she was the perfect dog. Never barked. She did her best impression of a husky cry, but it was a real wimpy whine that was hardly audible. She would match whatever my energy level was. If that meant a lazy day, she'd just hang out. Never could get her to play with toys.

Thank you for your informative video. There is one very important medical condition that you missed though that every potential or current corgi owner should know about and that is degenerative myelopathy which is the dog equivalent to Lou Gehrig's disease. This is an awful disease that will slowly cause paralysis and always ends in the dogs death. Sadly it is something too many corgis have been victim of because of bad breeding. This can be prevented. Make sure to get your corgi puppy from a reputable breeder who has tested their corgis for DM. If we all do this we can get rid of this disease.

my old corgi was born with a small kidney. she was very amazing and you couldn't tell. but as she grew her kidneys didn't. she died at around 2 and a half months. we had her for almost 2 weeks. I will always miss Haisley. The breeder was so kind about it and very sad that this had happened. she gave us a full refund, but we still had to pay the vet bills. she had been breeding Corgis for 40 years and this had never happened before. I REALLY DO SUGGEST GETTING PET INSURANCE! our new one is doing very well. when she was a puppy she had giardia and we had to pay EVEN MORE for that. we have pet insurance now but PLEASE GET IT EARLY!!!!

I LOVE CORGIS they are my dream dog and I've seen one in real life her name was sunny. I am very active . I've been doing a lot of research. SO I THINK I AM READT TO GET A CORGI

I thought I was ready too lol and then I got a corgi puppy… my god she was a lot of work lol but so worth it. Even if you are prepared it could still be difficult so don’t give up because they are the best partners anyone could have.

Even though my boy is only part Corgi, I can attest to all of these. Great video.

My corgi is a lazy dog lol hes 8 months now he will play and go for a walk but if were just chillin he chills hes been an easy puppy as well he does like working though learning tricks and getting rewards loves scratches

I spent 20 weeks in supervised training with my second corgi. It still wasn’t enough! 😂

We just got ourselves an adorable 7 month corgi a couple of weeks ago and I feel like we got lucky as he's the complete opposite of how you described Willow and the general corgi characteristics. Our corgi sleeps a lot and not really food driven (he's so picky). He also doesn't seem to like playing with the toys I've bought him. He can be loud for anonymous reason. He just making our pandemic life bearable

We have a Corgi, about 8 months old, and she is a lot what you say. One difference if we let her out she will not run away, in fact she will not go out unless I step out with her. She will always stay in eye shot of me when outside and does not chase after stray dogs or people always by my side. She is deaf and a pain in the ass. She is a keeper.

As a Corgi owner of 12+ years, I can only say that they indeed do mellow with time. My baby, Sadie the Wonder Corgi (corny but it fits) may well outlive me. She's 15 or 16 and going strong. She had a recent bout with oral cancer but seems to be beating it at least for now. I paid for surgery to get it rectified and now we just watch for any new oral growths. Oh, BTW, I'm 70. My point is simple: Your Corgi may be around for a very long time. Be fully committed to a long term relationship. If you have questions about that then don't get a Corgi!! @@devonandwillo Devon, It's a year or so later, Jan 2023. Sadie's health took a turn for the worse over the past 3-4 months. She developed Doggie Dementia and I had to banish her to my back patio as she was no longer housebroken. There's much, much more that I won't get into. As a result of all these new issues, I euthanized my beloved Sadie this past Monday, Jan 9. She was 16.5-17.5 years old. I'm heartbroken and a little lost as this pooch was my life since my wife died in 2014. I continue to live alone and Sadie was the bestest buddy ever. Like you, she often went with me everywhere I'd go. Dogs are indeed "man's best friend". So now I'm starting a search for a new Corgi. I think I have resources here in SoCal. Having said that, if you have any new or interesting twists to finding a new Corgi, I'd love your thoughts. Give my best to Willo. 🙂🙂

I find this video funny because my dog doesn’t follow any of the breed traits. She’s so timid. She sleeps most of the day and doesn’t know how to play. We rehomed her and I don’t know if she was like that as a puppy or they weren’t that nice to her. But she is so smart.

Teenage years are super annoying

I have a mix of corgi and Chihuahua. Stubborn is true for this one. If she is excited, she won't do anything but bark, run and or ignore, ignoring even her favorite treats. We had to have the invisible fence turned to highest strength even for this little 10 lb fully grown dog, otherwise chasing squirrel was too great a temptation. If a vehicle enters our drive, she goes nuts jumping high as the doorknob to get out. Once out, she runs from one end of her invisible fence to the other, barking at the vehicle and running back and forth many times even after the vehicle is gone. Since I have bad knees, It's ok because She does stay in "fence" and it gives her the chase she so delights in. She barks incessantly at visitors for about half an hour refusing commands and treats. If they ignore her, she calms sooner, or if I have her on leash and in my lap across the room, she calms down sooner. Funny though, she doesn't bark at anyone when we are away from home. So, I assume it's the protecting home space that's the difference. She usually won't come in by my calling her, but I leave the door cracked open, and she comes in by herself. She will come when called sometimes for treats or for me calling her with Good girl in an excited happy voice. But she cuddles, follows me everywhere, and can make us laugh at her antics. She blesses us as much as she aggravates us. We are home bodies, retired so she has company all day. Oh, she also HATES stink bugs and flys. She definitely let's me know when one is in the house!

I have to correct something, they were bread to herd sheep not cows, though I’ve seen them do so, mine isn’t high energy but she’ll jump right up and go to work if she hears or smells an animal outside, extremely food motivated! Don’t get one if you’re the kind of person that likes to eat a whole sandwich, my girl loves to ride on the 4 wheeler with me but if her (lab) brothers get out ahead she wants too to go get in front of them, oh and even though she’s the baby, she’s The BOSS! Don’t let them jump off the couch or beds and you’ll save their legs ..yes mine is very spoiled, I don’t know a single corgi that isn’t. Mine barks to alert or to boss her brothers, and she talks to me, but not daddy 😏 she chews me out if I go somewhere and didn’t take her, she’s extremely attached to me (because I share my food) I tethered her when she was little and it just stuck, she always has to be near me, it’s not shedding, it’s corgi glitter!! From the fairy they carry (legend)

I have a 2 year old corgi who is our third corgi we have owned (or rather we have been owned). My last corgi, Truman, was obsessed with the Frisbee and could catch any Frisbee if it was thrown in his general direction. When he turned 13 ½ he got problems with his rear legs where he started to drag them and ultimately couldn't stand with out being wobbly-often falling on his rear. He lived to be 14 ½ years old. Our 2 year old corgi, Hank, just learned catch the Frisbee and is an awesome catcher, but now I worry that perhaps the Frisbee activity is too stressful on his back and joints. He is obsessed with playing with the Frisbee and I have to admit it is a blast watching this little dog race to leap in the air executing a perfect catch. Thoughts? Am I "killing" my dog?

I am tempted to get a corgi but I’m not at the point to get one yet since there are other breeds I’d rather have first but corgi is in my top 5 I’d like to get.

I think it says in the breed standard on AKC "not for the 1st time dog owner" 😆. Its a fact. Ive haf them since the early 90s. They are awesome, but not for everyone. Also find a good breeder! My 1st couple were high energy and less social. The 3 i have now are from a great breeder in Ft. Worth. They are much more chill than others ive had. Talk to any potential breeder about your life and what they are trying to breed for.

i friggen love my corgi hes a super turd but i love him. we just got back from the park where he ran with other dogs for an hour straight until he passed out in the car for a whole woppin 30 mins. on the way home and now hes ready to go again. 🤣🤣🤣

Yeah when you use words that become too common they aren't as effective, like no, or even come. We us target in place of come now and it has made her recall so much better!

I got my corgi to stop running outside by opening my apartment door and then the second she try’s to run, ignoring her and getting cheese or pepperoni in the loudest wrapper possible from my refrigerator. I try not to make a habit of feeding lots of human food just she’s picky and I’ve found high value behavior deserves high value treats. I figure it makes her less likely to run outside into a the street this way. She’s off leash trained too jic and pretty much always stays with friends she knows if I’m at friends houses which works for me.

She is my emotional support animal, so she used to be able to sit in my lap. Now ESAs. are banned on most airlines so she has to be in a carrier under the seat

My Corgis liked to run away from me one of them got loose going into the groomers for a bath and brush and went for her life down the street i couldnt chase her because i had the other 2 with me so i just ignored her and within a minute she was back by my side realising i was not going to chase after her

I have a cat and am getting a Corgi puppy soon. Did your Corgi always get a long with them? any tips on introducing my puppy?

I would introduce them very slowly and reward your puppy for leaving the cat alone for now. Your corgi is going to want to play with your cat like they played with their littermates and your cat probably won't like that lol! We got lucky because my cat was a kitten when he met Willo and it was easier for him to adapt to play with her, older cats usually have a much hard time. You may just work on them coexisting peacefully.

How long does a dog in heat last? My dog has been in heat for probably 2 weeks and how do u know if she's out of heat?

I have a Corgi that I love dearly, but she does shed horribly! I had Labs, Rotties and my Corgi and all were shredders, but even as a small dog she's been the worst shedder for all times! And in spite of this, at 71 I am having the worst battle with myself about getting another one. Can I survive puppy hood one more time? The time needed to be invested is a major necessity and I wonder if I am up to it. I hate having my brain battling with my heart. I can't imagine my life without my companion. We'll see in the coming months which wins out.

@@devonandwillo thank you for your nice reply. Yes, I am not helping my torture either. Besides watching you and Willo. I also watch Vlog after College with Ryen and Gatsby and Gatsby 's own KZread channel Gatsby the Great Corgi. He's soooo darn handsome and cute, verrrry smart and so well trained and does so many things. I just can't imagine when the time comes that I live without my corgi or any other Corgi. Good luck with your decision too. At least you're young and both of you have the time left in your life, more energy than I do, and Willo is a lot younger and has spent less time being a spoiled only child so she would probably be more accepting of a new member in the family and just play constantly. 😁

3:34 oh that is most definitely not true in my experience. Our Molly would do ANYTHING to please us.

The 'Fluffys' don't have the two coats and actually shed less than the regular coat contrary to what you'd think. I knew a couple that have had a large number of Corgis over the years and when they're looking for a new dog they wait until they can get a Fluffy because they shed less. On the negative is if your going to show your Corgi the fluffys do not meet AKC breed standard so you can't show them. The Fluffy gene shows up in the Cardigans as well as the Pembrokes.

Very true! I want a fluffy corgi next, not necessarily because they shed less, but because they're so dang cute :)

my number 1 tip if you want a corgi- get a corgi from a proper breeder who is part of the official british kennel club of your country. they need to have proper papers and ancestry trees, which includes health tests from their parents as well as the puppies. all this makes them quite costly puppies but it is worth every penny. also, dont let them run down the stairs if you live in a house with lots of stairs
