Bill Steer at this point is one of the most CRIMINALLY overlooked guitar players in metal history. The precision, tone and sheer volume of those riffs in this song is insane. This is a crazy good song by the English Legends

Just got the album last night. It's fkn brilliant. Definitely Carcass, definitely a 10/10. Absolute aces. You guys keep pumping out new tunes after all these years that are quality, most importantly, actual songwriting. Where I'm completely bored with over tech, math-like modern metal that has flooded the scene as of late, with no catchy hooks, melody, choruses etc. etc. Whereas Carcass always manages to be technical within an actual song that fkn grooooooves. This is a breath of fresh air, freaking GREAT album. And once again.... Bill Steer the ageless, Immortal, TONE and VIBRATO of the Gods. Cheers guys!!

As a proud owner of the one of the 1st printed Reek of Putrefaction vinyl records(which sounded like when trying to brew kilju, you didn't let the yeast settle, or alternatively the guy doing the mixing was just really .. really inebriated), I'm happy to say that Carcass just matures as old wine. Exquisite. Whilst fast approaching half a century of existence, speed dosn't matter so much to me anymore. Hooks do. And I'm happy to hear they've still got it.

This is gonna be a long one so bear with me. Carcass is a band I’ve been obsessed with ever since a friend lent me his copy of Symphonies of Sickness back when I was 16, needless to say he never got his CD back. I was just blown away by the creativity of this band. Even though bands on the extreme spectrum of metal were already around by the time Carcass released Reek of Putrefaction I don’t think anyone was doing anything quite as special as what they were doing. I’m a big horror fan and the best analogy I can think of to explain why I love this music is that it gives me the same kick or rush that I get from a good horror movie. It’s clearly not for everyone, but it’s supposed to be scary, it’s supposed to be disturbing and freak you out a little bit, but always in a fun and clever way. Reek of Putrefaction (the song) exemplifies this very well, it’s a musical version of a horror movie to me. The way it builds up, the eerie sounds, the freaky melodies and arrangements, the brutality, it gives me chills every time. Even their artwork separated them from the rest. You see something like a Cannibal Corpse album cover and it traumatizes you, it is shock value in its purest form. But Carcass didn’t have to rely on that, they were more subtle. When you see something like the original cover of Reek of Putrefaction, if you see it from a distance you don’t make much of it, you see a pattern or a collage of some sort. It’s not until you see the artwork up close that you realize these are pictures of actual dead people, taken from autopsies and medical journals, and arranged in such an artistic and disturbing way that you can’t help but think this came straight out of some serial killer’s scrapbook. One thing is creating a painting of something fantastical and gruesome, and another is putting images of what death actually looks like, the decay of the human body seems like such a taboo subject and something we all live almost in denial of. Then the medical lyrics, instead of being gimmicky it just worked so well because of how thoroughly they committed to it, and of course they eventually grew out of that concept and kept innovating the genre. Carcass never settled for just one thing and constantly evolved their sound and tested their limits and creativity, like all true artists do. So anyway, this band means a lot to me and I’m so glad they’re not only still making music but delivering stuff that’s deserving of being in their (in my opinion) flawless discography. Thank you Carcass for being such a cool part of my life and hope to see you guys back in Mexico soon. Salud!

Great post. They were so unique & ahead of their time. Plus they never allowed themselves to stagnate. Also the way they so clearly distinguished themselves from Napalm Death, despite sharing Bill in the early days & essentially pioneering the same brand new genre together, is an inspiration. Their british pitch black humour & underlying message in some of the lyrics/cover concept, while both being fairly subtle, gave them an edge over say Autopsy & Cannibal's more b-movie gore imagery.

Well said. Symphonies (it was just before the release of Necroticism) was the first album I heard too and I've been hooked since. Carcass is my favorite band by far. Jeff's lyrics always deliver and give you alot to think about (even when they are painting a clear and grim picture). He's brilliant, in my book. Here are my transcribed vocals Tenebrist, gashes to ashes Horologist, lust to dust Hacked in seconds, tooth by tooth Come stare into the void Condemned to one sequence See the ticking of skeletonized parts Rest in corpse and minute pieces Where only death is real They say You have all the time in the world But the world is not yours Once the hours seen inside shift away In the hourglass, as the sands of time The weeks, the hours, the minutes, the seconds Once you have, the are dropping like Once the hours seen inside shift away In the hourglass as the sands of time The years, the months, the days, the hours Are dropping like flies Death's clock dial Countdown! A rope pressing against your temple Totally calibrating, no escape The realization of the torment He's the grave wound inflictor Having daddy issues with father time Unrelenting chronology Rips in joy in the final life They say: "You have all the time in the world" But the world does not belong to you Once the hours seen inside shift away In the hourglass as the sands of time The weeks, the hours, the minutes, the seconds Are quickly ticking by Once the hours seen inside shift away In the hourglass as the sands of time The years, the months, the days, the hours Are dropping like flies Tick tick tock Try to rewind the death clock The pendulating scythe remorseless Tick tick tock Try to rewind the death clock The pendulating scythe remorseless Tick tick tock Try to unwind the death clock You do not possess the winding key Once the hours seen inside shift away In the hourglass as the sands of time The years, the months, the days, the hours Are dropping like flies Tick Tick Tick Tick [?]
