Carbon Wheels on an SUV? New Range Rover Sport SV Review | Henry Catchpole - The Driver's Seat
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
An initial worldwide run of 2500 First Edition Range Rover Sport SVs - costing £185,000 or $180,300 each - has ALREADY SOLD OUT, so the concept is clearly a popular one. As a vehicle it might be a little hard to fathom initially, and plenty will ask what the point is, but the aspect of the SV that arguably makes it interesting is that it still has proper off-road capability. While a Ferrari Purosangue might wince at the thought of much more than a muddy car park, the Range Rover Sport SV has been through the same off-road tests as its Land Rover brethren. Even while wearing those carbon fiber rims.
That's right: The new Range Rover Sport SV can be bought with carbon fiber wheels. Huge, 23-inch carbon fiber wheels. What’s more, you can have enormous carbon ceramic brakes with 440mm discs and eight piston calipers. Add in an anti-roll system that we’ve previously seen on supercars and you have a Land Rover capable of tackling totally new territory for the brand.
Whilst cars like the Porsche 911 Dakar and Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato seek to broaden their sporty horizons on muddier terrain, the new Range Rover Sport SV is setting its sights on the smooth tarmac of race circuits. Everyone it seems is blurring the lines these days. On the international launch, Henry Catchpole drove the SV around the testing twists and turns of Portimao and was frankly astonished at what the Land Rover was capable of.
The 6D Dynamics system for the chassis keeps the SV incredibly flat, both laterally in the corners and longitudinally under acceleration and braking. It’s helped by a redesigned rear subframe and and a ride height that is 25mm lower than a standard Range Rover Sport when in its new SV mode. There is also a considerably quicker steering ratio and the option of new Michelin Pilot Sport 5 S summer tyres to help get the most from the chassis
By comparison with the chassis, the powertrain is a bit of a sideshow. The BMW-sourced 4.4-litre, mild hybrid, twin-turbo V8 sounds quite pleasing, but is very demure acoustically when compared to the old SVR’s 5-litre Supercharged V8. However, producing 635bhp and 553lb ft of torque it has plenty of propulsion to propel the SV to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds on all-season rubber or 3.6 seconds on the summer tyres.
Thank you, as ever for watching. And thank you to the very kind owner of the Irish Green 911 Dakar for lending it to us for the film. As an engineer I disapprove of this message. It is not 'special' to make a car drive properly with practically unlimited weight, size and such a high price bracket at hand. Still like the video though, great presentation and proper explanation of the car for what it is.
Carwow very recently tested the new Range Rover Sport SV and it already had to visit the repair shop for a failure of the transfercase. Land Rover has consistently been building unreliable vehicles. Never change Land Rover 🤣🤣🤣

So, does it reach the finish line before breaking down?
The reason why there was a left hand drive and a right hand drive was probably down to the right hand drive got stolen just outside of Birmingham. He was secretly tracking in down across Europe, making out it was a 'track day'.
Almost wierd they didnt remove the backseat too and put a rollcage in it.
Interesting choice of using 2.35 aspect ratio.
Interesting car but too expensive for what it is. Personally if I was after a performance SUV I would be looking across the dealership at a Jaguar F Pace SVR. it might be a bit smaller but on paper it's 90% the capability of this Range Rover for 60% of the price (and you can probably get some discount on the Jag too).

You might not want to do that : Jaguar is cancelling all of the ice cars and going all electric.
I will never ever understand the concept of ridiculously expensive and fast SUV's. Yes, I understand the market...I understand fat guys with cash who just want the image....I understand the primitive urge to just slam the gas and be quick in a traffic-light-drag race. But honestly, they are pointless. Too big, too heavy, too expensive, too inefficient..... First corner you go through, you feel the massive weight of that oil-ship you call a car wanting to go through the guardrail....it's just awful. And with all that being said - they depreciate ridiculously fast. SUV's have their purpose....and it's something akin to a Jeep, Landcruiser, Jimny, those sort of things. Sportscars also have their purpose...to be quick, nimble, agile, fast, zippy....LIGHT. No horsepower can fix massive weight. If it could - no go-karts would ever be as fun as they are. All that being said...another great Hagerty video. Henry is awesome.
I don't understand the appeal...not my bag. Maybe if I need to take my living room with me when I go to market.
Nicce its back, did JLR wanted to moderate original video? Like they always do if something isnt perfect for them?
“If it couldn’t do the Range Rover I would have not be bothered to drive it” should be the tag line and to me (far from having the deep pockets to buy one) make this SV a car to like. Thanks as always.
Good video, as always but jeez I can’t build any enthusiasm for this. So much so that all I can think is “how much will that 6d system cost to repair when it starts to break eventually”.
Given the fact that the stated point of differentiation here is the off-road ability, I'd like to see that tested in the review. Yes, it was taken down some tracks, but I've driven the roads shown in the film (and far steeper and more remote) in an underpowered 2wd Fiat Panda hire car without an issue, so that case hasn't yet been made for me...

A Russian channel AcademeG compared the previous svr against an Lexus lx570 (essentially a Land cruiser lc200) the svr went everywhere the lc200 went with less effort. It easily beat the lc200 on every hillclimb due to it's diffs and power. Both cars had smaller wheels with similar at tires.

Can’t see this being dynamically better, more fuel efficient or as roomy as my Panamera ST turbo S. To each their own I guess
Honest question... How do people afford to buy such costly things knowing it will be just about worthless in less then 5 years? I guess being poor my whole life made me look at how people spend money I'll never know of in a bad light. I guess if you want to be happy in life, don't get born with a defective spine and hope you don't work your life away just to be too broken to enjoy anything you worked for. Definitely blurs the lines from the opposite direction. I'd argue the Serrato or Dakar make those respective cars more usable (even in a daily driving scenario), whereas this RR SV becomes less usable than it's base variant.
Nice to see Henry, but this vehicle could hardly be more boring.

Suspension from McLaren is too glamorous , the crafty 1996 Citroen Xantia Activa is the correct source.
@Stag2997

The Xantia Activa was more mechanical. The 6D setup isn't all that different to what is in the McLaren, with zero anti-roll bars, and the diagonally linked suspension.
Wait… why did they re-upload this?
Build a 2,5t car to offer weight saving carbon rims for the extra cost of a small second hand city car. I must be too poor to comprehend this marketing strategy.
This video has been already uploaded before. Like if you knew.
Bring back the old engine! That was the real interesting thing of the car!
Taking your sport SUV to a track day is like trying to fit into skinny jeans after a buffet binge - you’ll struggle to squeeze in, and the results won’t be pretty.

Get rid of the box on the chassis and substitute a GT body and it would be interesting. Also, ditch the huge TV.

It strikes me that adding complication to range rover suspension is just going to end up expensive for the next owner, given their notorious reliability issues, and that's if it doesn't sting the first owner.

It’s the jump in price over the previous SVR model. ~£60k. That’s a lot. It’s a superb car, I’d have one over the Aston DBX any day of the week. Better looking without a doubt. And still a genuine off roader.
Struggling to understand why you wouldn't just buy a dedicated track car and a fast daily driver. Because lets be honest, no sv will ever go off road unless its in journalists hands.
You mean, “Leased Out!”
Buy an X5M if you want something like this which has security 😂
Need two, one for the day while the other is at the mechanic’s shop.
Does it include a free Tow Truck subscription at purchase
Land rover making a track car...........lol...........how many have broken down??? May I suggest a cayenne turbo..........any takers.
If you don't mind a new engine every track day
Why? Why not I suppose.
Play the ranger rover lottery - Which will happen first… 1)break down, Or 2)it gets stolen 😂😂
The world’s biggest brake callipers?
None of the cars blurs the lines: it is marketing for the silly and a lack of direction that marks many aspects of the current society. The Dakar and the Sport SV are both anomalies but if people want to spend (For the RR the word is more like wasting not applicable to the Porsche which I suspect will retain its value if not appreciating over time...if kept locked like most will...) their cash on this much nonsense then it is their problem...
Can't wait to see them out at my local track.
Henry, you're gonna get ticks from trodding through the bush.
Drive it like you stole it.. someone will
It’s commendable what they’ve achieved with such a large vehicle, but I still really don’t get this ongoing trend by car companies to make SUVs ‘sporty’. SUVs are marketed to and mainly bought by families as ‘people carriers’. 99.9% of the time they are used to drop the kids off at school, go grocery shopping, family road trips and towing a trailer. I’d highly doubt that even the remaining 0.1% of drivers would take them to a track day or cruise a B road for the sake of a sporty drive. Adding a ‘Sport’ badge to something like an SUV will make it sound cooler than the standard version to a lot of buyers so they’ll feel they need to buy that one in order to get the better handling version even though they’ll drive it no different to a non sport version. It is impressive that this hulking great car can move but let’s be real, no Range Rover Sport owner is ever going to drive it like this.
@Spenny909

I agree, but I don't want a car that is not "sporty" whatever its size. I dislike the ride height but at least I don't need to worry about clearance from snow etc. as well as having room for a family trip across Europe, while enjoying the way it drives. Take away the aspect of how it feels to drive and I lose any interest in driving.
The eternal dilemma - great engine or great chassis - I'd stick with the previous SVR.
Imagine curbing one of those wheels 😳

Henry another great one from you and Hagerty you should run TopGear US with Jason and Randy. Range Rover should make land yachts not racing SUVs ;)
I’m pretty sure Land Rover could let the journalists drive this and sing its praises then save money by just selling a car that looks the same as no buyer is ever gonna drive it on track. These r purchased by posers and drug dealers ffs
Looks awesome until usual LR issues show themselves and it’s in the shop for a month at a time 😂
Hahaha someone goofed and uploaded this before the embargo a few days ago
The only thing faster is the depreciation.
Seriously……why does this exist? It’s not going to be as good as a standard car for off road and it’s inferior to something like an M3 estate on road. Yea….nah not for me.

Having had an e90 m3 and an X5m I agree with you that the M3 is certainly more dynamic and better on road than a “super SUV.” That said, the X5m was genuinely fun to drive, faster than my m3 and could deal with snow and some light off-roading where the m3 was hopeless in snow (long story, was only car and had to and it was quite the white knuckle drive). I think the absurdity of what the suv could do and its exaggerated dynamics with its high seating position led to a more “silly” fun driving experience.

Welcome to another episode of Harry’s Garage 😄
Yes..they do blur the lines. All these fast suvs or even electric suvs are now in sports and almost supercar territory. I would ask though..why would you want this? At what point did a car enthusiast when younger dream of the day they have a supercharged ..brick. its looks not bad...for a 4x4. If you want a big nice luxury car to pose ..buy a normal RR. If you want performance buy a bloody performance looking car! These sorts of vehicles ..or the people buying them are ruining the sporty parts/areas of manufacturers.
