Carbon - Tales from the Periodic Table

Ғылым және технология

Carbon is the 6th element in the periodic table. It's the 4th most common element in the universe, and the 2nd most common element in our body by mass. It occurs in nature in many different pure forms, or allotropes, such as coal, graphite, and diamond, and can be artificially produced as fullerenes, graphene, and nanotubes. It forms the basis for a whole branch of chemistry, organic chemistry. Life would be impossible without it. In its diamond form it's the hardest element and can be used as an abrasive. In its graphite form, it's very soft and can be used as a lubricant! Carbon is an important part of the Sun's power-plant turning Hydrogen into Helium. One of its radioactive isotopes, Carbon-14, is used to date organic material.

Working on that one. You probably won't be surprised to find it eerily similar to Osmium... Ron

Interesting, I always thought that stars like the sun produce helium by directly fusing hydrogen in the form of deuterium together! I didn't know that other elements are involved in the production of helium!

The sun does both. The CNO cycle becomes more dominant as the star increases in mass.

But most helium is actually primeval from the Big Bang, right? Stars also fuse much of their own helium before dying AFAIK.

Thanks, @Narnald_Ewman. And thanks for subscribing! I hope to have the next one posted in a few days (Osmium) which will hopefully happen if I can get rid of this laryngitis! I feel obligated not to croak my way through it! Ron

Ron if you find a way to turn that crystal into a diamond let me know cause I have one just like it.

I'm afraid that's impossible. The glass the "gem" is made from only Silicon and Oxygen, no Carbon. Oh well... Maybe we can squish some of your tomatoes into diamonds - not as delicious... Ron

I don't believe you. If that were a diamond, you would still be doing "Tales From The Periodic Table".

But... he would be showing us a real diamond of that mega-size and not a fact-simile. Sure he would have sold it for easier and more luxurious living but he'd still would keep a photo or video-record.
