Carbon Fiber Parts from 3D Printed Mold Patterns. RC Airplane Rudder.

Making parts for an RC airplane from Carbon Fiber can be done multiple ways. In this short I show how I used 3D prints to create mold patterns. I chose to use Touch PLA by Matterhackers ‪@MatterHackers‬ to print the the rudder mold using the ‪@Raise3D‬ Pro 2 3D printer. The 2x2 Twill Carbon fiber was sourced from ‪@fibreglast‬ and made for a nice light final part. The ribs were printed from NylonX also from Matterhackers for its strength to weight ratio and dimensional stability over a large range of temperatures. I'm not sponsored by or received any products from any of these companies.
The total print time for this was roughly 60 hours in order to print both halves which were split into 4 pieces so that they could fit in the build chamber.
From print, to joining, sanding, priming, painting to install it took a total of 6 days.

    After building giant scale Concorde, Super Connie, C-130, DC-10 and Avro Arrow I am fully appreciating all the time, energy that you are putting into building your gorgeous giant L1011 RC model. Apart from 3D technology and new light weight engineering techniques, everything else you did is pretty much the same as how giant scale models back in the day.

    Thank you! It's nice to know there are people out there who have experience with this kind of project to appreciate it 😀 - Yeah, I am taking a hybrid approach, trying to merge the old school model building style with new tools and tech. Your builds sound amazing! The Concord had to have been a real challenge.

    I’ve found that using ABS and simply vapor smoothing the surface works better and is way less work

    I was thinking of doing the same but with fiberglass, anyway I can get it setup so maybe I can try and make some custom parts for my car. I do miss flying my rc planes and now that I own a printer I can print my own planes. subbed

    Hey man love your vid’s and as a new fusion 360 user, I’m so glad you put up these vids. Just a question, can you make a vid on how you made the molds for the rudder? Im finding it difficult to use the combine tool and my molds never come out. The image of the part is not cut out even though when I select the target. I select the piece I’m trying to mold. Great vids man and I appreciate your time and effort!

    Thanks for the request. Seems like this is a hot topic since I have been asked several times. I may need to work on putting a video together on how I went about creating my molds from start to finish. The combine tool can be a little fussy if your geometry or bodies aren't right. There are many ways to do it, I've used different methods. It all boils down to how you want to create the molds and the shape of the part to be made.

    Awsome! Been getting into this myself as well. Whats the pink stuff you applied there? Bondo? Also the final red layer, is that paint or some sort of additional smoothing element to help make sureface flawless?

  • @RCCAD2VR

    @RCCAD2VR

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi, Cool to hear that you are getting into making composite parts. The pink stuff is a filler that can be easily sanded. It is pink when it is wet and white when dry. The red is a high gloss paint that then gets wet sanded with a really high grit sandpaper to get a really smooth finish.

    There are always tradeoffs. High volume production definitely needs more durable molds, for low run or one time parts 3D prints are perfect if you know how to dial in the print settings correctly.
