    Thank you for watching! And by phenyl, do you actually mean an aryl carbocation (as in a carbon with a positive that is a part of a benzene ring)? Aryl carbocations are HIGHLY unstable, and I can elaborate on that, but I want to make sure we're on the same page.

    ​@@Scr3amingSpirit So when an aryl carbon (which is normally sp2) becomes a carbocation, it then has a hybridization of sp. sp carbons have linear geometry, but by being in a ring, that linear geometry can't be supported. There are other reasons too, and the accepted answer in this link does a good job of explaining them chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/10509/why-are-vinylic-and-arylic-carbocations-highly-unstable Let me know if that does/doesn't clear things up.

    Hi, Semper! It's actually impossible to have a quaternary carbocation. Because for something to be quaternary, it must be bonded to 4 other carbons, meaning that particular carbon would have 4 bonds and a 0 formal charge. Carbocations need to have a +1 formal charge, so they will only have 3 bonds. Does that make sense?

    @@jOeCHEM thank you for your speedy reply…I was asked a question on a homework for Orgo and it gave me three carbocations to rank in order of stability…it was a secondary, tertiary, and a X shaped carbocation with the positive charge on the central carbon…I was very confused as well because, like you, I thought that quarternary carbocations were impossible…

    Hey i understand the concept so well thank you so much sir but the only thing i am curious about is that, you said that the more neighbours the carbocation is attached to the more stable it is but can you tell me why is that so? Is it due to the delocalisation of electrons or what? And also does hyperconjugation has got something to do with it? I think because there are more number of carbons when the surrounding neighbours are more for a carbocation thus there would be more resonating structures and even when hyperconjugation comes into play there would be more no.of alpha hydrogens thus the stability is more. Correct me if am wrong. Waiting for an early reply..... Love ❤️from a 7th grader (indian) 😀.... Anyways thanks a lot

    This was a great video but you made a mistake at the very end. The correct order by most sources seems to be (Secondary Benzylic > Secondary Allyic > Tertiary > Primary Benzylic > Primary Allylic > Secondary > Primary > Methyl > then Vinyl if you wanted to add that).

    Resonance trumps all. Tertiary should never be more stable than benzylic which boasts many resonance structures. It’s because the charge is distributed over a network of atoms and lowers the overall energy of a structure.

    @@jOeCHEM I thought the same thing but it's an exception to the rule. I'm not sure why but this is what MCAT and DAT courses are teaching these days.

    @@connerhein2868 I think we’ll agree to disagree here (I don’t do MCAT prep, but all of my videos are based on organic chemistry curriculum & textbook content and organic chemistry doesn’t just “change”) because resonance being the force that it is even means allylic carbocations are more stable than tertiary carbocations. Whenever a single atom doesn’t have to handle a charge on its own, that’s a powerful stabilizing effect which lowers a molecule’s overall energy, making it more stable than the alternative. I really do appreciate you watching my video and being a jOeCHEMist, and I’ve made mistakes in the past that I’ve corrected (I’m not perfect), but I feel confident on this issue.

    @@jOeCHEM I totally agree with you. I guess it's a touchy subject in the world of Ochem. Just goes to show that scientists think they know so much (and they really do) but sometimes the simple things are the hardest to figure out... kinda like gravity.

    @@jOeCHEM Hey Joe, I just heard back from my DAT course instructors that for the sake of the DAT exam (tertiary > Benzylic > Allylic > Secondary > Primary > Methyl > Vinyl). Why, I don't know but that's what the U.S. and Canadian DAT go with. Thanks again for making the video cause all your explanations were concise and clear.
