Interesting tear-down. Great stuff doing a spot of reverse engineering.

It always brings some joy when I hear it called an 'Accessory Socket' in a modern car :) My car is now officially 33yrs and 2 months old, and in mine, it is a cigarette lighter socket :) Also, if your socket is the issue, then modern cars have even bigger problems than I would have thought, in my car, you can literally pull the socket right out of the dashboard, because the connections broke a long long time ago, it even spins around inside the hole, yet it still works 100%, I have a 4 port splitter plugged into it which powers a GPS, dashcam, my Brass Monkey 30L fridge/freezer in the cargo area (It gets HOT here in Western Australia!), and a plug with 2 USB ports on it.

Those green caps are nasty. Had a little switcher go bad because the output smoothing cap had dried out, I replaced them all and it does the job perfectly.

Heat kills the dash cam, at least here in Florida. Thanks for the test video.

Yeah well you should've swapped out that 100uF for the 470, the value the IC manufacturer recommends. Was there room to shoehorn one in ? Don't forget some of that ripple is being passed into the FB circuit.

The choice of caps is wrong on the output as they haven't addressed that 136Khz switching noise at all but as you say it is what it is and it handled the load like a champ !...cheers.

I'd run it assembled with 14.5 V and 1.5 A load, inside "cigarette lighter" socket, connect load trough USB port. I think it can be heat.

Try that USB charger at less than 12V. Is it possible you are getting a large volt drop at the socket, or brownout spikes? Otherwise, i've had same bad luck with dashcams until I switched to NextBase, they just work forever.

10:06 - I don't have OCD or anything - but damnnnnnnn. Look at that button labeled "SETUP" on the scope - totally off centered like Stevie Wonder made it.

Who ever sold you that knock off cad should give you a refund. it seems to have been provided with a whole bunch of dodgy symbols. 🙂 I've had a few of this type which would knock the radio out with wideband noise. They seem to just use the example circuits shown in the datasheets and never add the other components required to keep the conducted and radiated emissions within limits. Now if anybody can find information on a mains dc switcher in a sot23-6 package marked 33p2 it would help Me a lot.
