@@natashacrawford4146 Depends on your choice of subs and amp. Many places price match, but labor can be expensive at some high end places. If you live in LA, I suggest fantazy motorsports. Their labor is $119 an hour but their customer service is great and comes with lifetime warranty on the labor done. They price match with online prices.

i always found that 12's are the most popular, but for tight bass and SQ 10's usually sound the best for low outputs. 15's and 18's are the big boys and they always pack a large punch no matter what the brand, due to the large cone area

erick ruiz "but for tight bass and SQ 10's usually sound the best for low outputs" "Tight bass" isn't a term. "6. Smaller woofers sound better than bigger woofers One of the biggest myths about woofers is that 8’s and 10’s are “tighter” and “cleaner” than 15’s or 18’s. Nothing is really further from the truth. What tends to happen is that the smaller drivers have lower Q’s because manufactures tend to put large cones on smaller motors to increase SPL and sensitivity. Well unless the motor can compensate for the extra mass it has to push, then the Qts will not be the same as the smaller drivers the and ultimately the driver may not be suited for the same kinds of alignments and could ring too much and compromise the perceived sound quality. Having said that, high Qts drivers are not any less “tight” or “musical” than well damping drivers, it’s just they require larger boxes and less internal pressure to prevent ringing. All things equal, a well designed 18” woofer will sound louder with lower distortion than a well designed 12” or 10” woofer. Bigger is better, but its almost more expensive." www.data-bass.com/data?page=knowhow&type=1

No rap, dubstep or bass necter, more rock/metal, 70's, 80's and country music. I'm trying to decide between Image Dynamics and Sundown. What about actual frequency response? I've got a 15" Kicker solo Baric in a sealed box that I've been considering replacing. I listen to a wide range of styles. It slams on electronic/pop/and rap but on a lot of Rock/Metal .....especially classic stuff......it sounds like I engaged a Hi-pass filter. Even with the filter set wide open on my amp...there is a noticeable Freq "hole" between what my door speakers are covering (Infinity Reference Series) and where the subwoofer picks up. I've got limited trunk space (2019 Hyundai Veloster) but considering switching to two 10" subs in a ported box. In theory the 10's should be able to reproduce higher bass frequencies correct?

We tried to base the video off of what a certain size woofer is best at if they are all in the same series. Given the same everything but cone size, a larger woofer would hit the lows a little better. But yes, in the end, it mostly depends on the box.

That depends entirely on what components you purchased. If you have two subwoofers, 1150W RMS each, then you need a monoblock amplifier that outputs 2300W at either 1 or 2 ohms, depending on what subwoofers you purchased.

I'm also curious to hear people's experience with placement as I think this has a strong effect as well. I have 2x12 aluminum blaupunkts in a sealed box with 750RMS watts. In my last car I had them facing the interior firing directly through the back seat. It sounded tight, accurate and loud enough to put a big ol smile on my face. In my current car I turned the box around, same location but speakers pointing toward the rear bumper. According to a Crutchfield video this will give you 4 more db. I think I agree but I don't think it sounds as clean as before. Seems like it's muddier from all that bass bouncing around the trunk before it comes back to my ears. Thoughts? Comments?

Thank God you mentioned the enclosure, I was about to flip out because it's the box that makes the sub. It really annoys me that the common perception is that 15's can't produce punchy bass, or that 8's can't hit the lows. A SA-8 in the right box will hit lows better than an 18 in the wrong box.

I've had a 12 and a 10. Similar power subs. Both were in a ported box tuned to 33hz. The box I made for the 10 has a MUCH larger port area in comparison. Guess which one was more "punchy"? The 12, and by a noticeable amount! Guess which one was louder in the 30-35hz range? The 10, by about 4db 😂. They were in the same spot in the same vehicle. Same power going to them. The 10 rolled off a lot above 40hz since I made the port too big (it was roughly the same area as the 10" cone lol) I'd recommend making the port somewhere around half of the subwoofers "sd" parameter. The sd parameter is the affective cone area of the sub.

If you happen to listen to death metal. 8" sealed is the way to go. I did some comparisons with 12's and in sealed and ported @ 32hz, each in properly sized enclosures. The really fast and short double bass definitely comes out much clearer and pristine with 8's in sealed which is a must for this type of music as it can sound muddy otherwise. Of course I prefer sealed 8's for general metal/alternative as well since much of that music rarely goes very deep anyway. Plus with 8's you can have more of them with variations in box designs to suit your space.

I started with 2 x 10" 1200W sony Xplods, but then I managed to make the magnet on one of them come loose, So I replaced that one with a 12" 1200W Fusion but it sounded like crap, might have been the box size that did it though, then I swapped that 12" fusion for a 800W 12" Kenwood and it sounded alot better but the box size was still too small to get really good bass and I couldn't fit a bigger box in my car, so I ended up throwing it all out and building a new box with 4 x 8" 400W MDS' and it sounds amazing! And I've used the same Sony XM-2200GTX AMP on all of them.

Alright, so I listen to real heavy music with real fast repetitive bass kicks, and also listen to rap with low bass notes. Would it sound good if you had a 10" sub and a 15" both in different boxes? Please reply. Thanks in advance.

I would like to hear about the frequency response of the various sizes and also the relation of the enclosure geometries which enhance the resonances. Can an 8" sub gain the 20Hz levels if ported properly in other words? I think the discussion of the larger woofers lagging is a little lame in that this is why the higher power requirements is for. If there is lag, does that not mean there is not enough power to drive the cone accurately? Not sure if I am buying that line of thought fully. I was always told the key concepts of any speaker system is frequency response range, distortion levels, and response impedance. I also know the limitations physically of size to the frequency responses due to resonance of the cones. Has anyone dinked around with the values and enclosure engineering to know more on these key points? On a side note, has anyone messed with bass horns in the automotive environment? Just curious of feasibility vs. big coned woofers..

Game Art bigger subwoffers lag because the cone cant vibrate fast enough as the bass goes up to midbass frequencys... hence 10s and 8s are better for rock music... thats how i understand it..

Imo, although 160Hz might sound louder, it's best to stick with the 120Hz range for striking a middle ground in the science of Aural crossover frequencies.

Choosing a sub with facts in mind is very hard. If you want to have crisp sound you need to tune low with a reflex box, get an amp that can handle voice coil inductance and phase-shift that the subwoofer makes, get a sub that doesnt do much of the inductance, and place it in a box where it uses its efficiency well, produces a flat frequency response inside your car, and also position the box so the soundwaves travel correctly. Theres even more to it but I can't remember right now. Oh yeah, dont put a dvc sub in series, it makes the subwoofers phase shift double resulting in more muddy sound. Instead get an amp that handles low impedance loads and it will be under control better than with a high voltage low current amp in series. In other words, if you really lust for a speaker that has high qts and high induction place it in a sealed box and get a good amp. If you want to be heard get two 15's with 3" voicecoils and an amp that puts out 3000w rms, 200-250litre box tuned to 30-35hz, and at least 120ah of batteries. Pretty roughly said but should do the trick :D

I've watched a ton of videos on subs, and am still confused. I want defined clear bass, but I want it to hit HARD. I want to feel it in my steering wheel and my seat, but with no rumbling or distortion in my classic rock/country/occasional rap. Is that possible? What size sub would I want for this?

yes it does having more power also means you will distort your sub less which can make it sound cleaner and less muddier, however size also depends on your vehicle aswell most vehicles should use a 12 " sub its well rounded as he said
