[Idle Air Control Valve / Air Bypass Valve / IAC actuator / Idle Air Control actuator]
Car stalling at idle? when stopping or slowing down?
An idle air control actuator or idle air control valve (IAC actuator/valve) is a device commonly used in fuel-injected vehicles to control the engine's idling rotational speed (RPM). So typically when the accelerator pedal is UP and the car is idling! When the accelerator is pressed, the throttle plate opens which allows air into the engine, that is why you wont have these symptoms when not at idle. When the throttle plate is closed, we still need a way for air to get into the engine otherwise the car will stall! This is where the IAC Valve comes into play! The car's computer will tell the valve to open 'enough' to allow 'enough' air to bypass the closed throttle plate to maintain a steady idle. Easy!
In carburetted vehicles a similar device known as an idle speed control actuator is used. Check your car has one. Electronic throttle body's do not. In this case, it might be something like a vacuum leak.
[Valve Actuator]
A valve actuator is a mechanical device that uses a power source to operate a valve. This power source can be electric, pneumatic (compressed air), or hydraulic (the flow of oil)
Examples: A choke aka the butterfly flap in a carburetor, Idle Air Control Valve etc
[Symptoms]
Rough at idle (sticking in a closed position)
Stalling at idle (sticking in a closed position)
RPM hesitation at idle (sticking in general)
High RPM at idle (1500rpm on start, 800rpm when warm aka after 2 minutes) (sticking in an open position)
When an extra load is placed on the engine, the RPMs can fluctuate or the engine can stall (AC compressor, auxiliary components, power steering etc)
Usually it's because the valve is gummed up with carbon deposits.
[Rule]
Idle Air Control Valve stuck open = high idle = allowing too much air to the engine
Idle Air Control Valve stuck closed = hesitation/stalling = Not allowing enough air to the engine
[Location]
Find the air filter (For air coming in). Follow the intake tubing from here. The Idle Air Control Valve will be at the other end of the intake tube (as it allows air to the engine from the intake tube!)
[Cleaning]
1. Keep motor upwards! This way our cleaning products won't enter our motor.
2. Try to move the internal valve manually (to confirm it's stuck)
3. Clean it! Use brushes to help
4. Make sure it's fully dry before re-installing

Just did this to my 89 lincoln TC . Upon acclerating from a dead stop, the CEL would flash, engine would hesitate briefly then go. Just about every stop. After cleaning and reinstalling my IAC, the CEL was doing its thing still for a couple miles but finally stopped and hasnt returned and the idle is much much better. Thank you For this video.

I saw the tensioner pulley hesitate on the test drive. i replaced the two idler pulleys and the tensioner pulley. left the old belt alone. now My idle darts. it is better than before. I can clean the IAC. what about plugs? bought new air filter have to replace that. could it be a vacuum leak? thx .

My car actually starts up climbs idle a few times stays at 1500 at idle then drops to maybe 1.1k rpm it also sounds like it’s cammed sometimes it will start chopping and rpm’s will be jumping from 700 to 400 back to 7 so on so forth until it either catches itself or dies

  • @faithnoman2635

This controls the air for idle. The MAF sensor reads the incoming air to determine what the computer wants to do with air/fuel ratio and things like the idle air control valve.

Hi, I have a 2003 Ford Mustang GT with 30,000 miles. It has been driven intermittently for the past 15ish years until recently. It's now my daily driver, but just recently, the Check Engine light came on and the RPMs fluctuate after a cold start. Do you think this could be due to a faulty IAC Valve? Any advice would be a major help. Thank you!

Could also be a vacuum leak! Could be many things really. My best advise to you is to take it to a shop and get a diagnosis (Many of them offer free visual inspection) When you get the diagnosis, tip the guy a couple of bucks if hes nice, then go home start learning how to fix the problem yourself

If you have a check engine light, then pull the codes. There is no sense in guessing what the problem is. You can rent the tools for free from many auto stores.

I did it was the icv idler control valve I cleaned it out with some brake cleaner. The gasket was little worn but still good. It was driving absolutely fine for about 3 weeks after that, now I'm experiencing a new problem. Now "sometimes " when I'm accelerating it studders when I'm going from 1000 rpm to around 2000 rpm. After 2000 it's just fine.. sounds great feels great but then I'll shift into second and it dips below 2000 (around 1500 rpm) and starts to studder a bit until I hit 2000 rpm again... whats going on??
