    Nice build! I did something similar to my Nissan Sentra. I removed the back seats and was amazed that a twin size mattress fit perfectly, but I've considered a build like yours to open up more space. I also like how you set up the curtains - I'm going to do that with mine. Great video! Thanks for sharing.

    I like an air mattress for a sleeping system. It saves a lot of weight in the vehicle build. Air mattresses are comfortable. They are easy to sanitize and come in differing sizes. I prefer natural fabrics In the vehicle like cotton wool and linen. They do not emit odors and are easiest to clean. I have a Chevy express high top van with tinted windows.I have black out curtains. Its a wheel chair van so I have a permit that I can place in the vehicle that is visable. I can park in any spot that is designated for handicap use. My sleeping space is very comfortable. I have room to stand up inside and move around. I don't cook in the van unless its something minima I do have a 12volt refrigerator and a power station that lets me have electricity discretely anywhere. I dont cook in the van except for using my crock pot plugged into my power station. I dont use anything with an open flame in the van. I have a 12 volt tea kettle to heat water in two minutes. I do have a two burner propane camping stove I only use it outside the van. So with it i can use a fry pan, perk fresh coffee or make a four course meal if i want to. This keeps cooking odors out of the van and I can heat water for cleaning bathing and everything else.No one has ever knocked on my door or bothered me day or night. I never stay longer than one day or one night in any one spot. If your not leaving any messes or causing any disturbance you will be safe and no one will bother you. I also have magnetic signs that I can place in the window and remove on demand. One says clergy one says process server one says mortuary service vehicle. I have never gotten a knock on my door.

  • @mikebikercanada

    @mikebikercanada

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks ! Yes the front seat is all the way forward, so unfortunately there’s no leg room up front for a passenger. But one can sit behind me on the rear bench if needed. at first I considered removing the front seat all together. But sliding the seat forward provided enough room. I’d imagine your Camry would probably be even bigger than my Sentra, so depending on your height you might not need to slide it all the way forward.

    Thank you for all the great ideas! :D I didn't know I could find that kind of fabric at the fabric store and have been trying to slowing figure out how to build out my car. Now that you've been camping for awhile, can you tell me if the black tape has off-gassing? I was thinking that is CRAZY EASIER then sewing but I want to bring my young son camping and he has some lung stuff so your input would help greatly. Thanks :D

  • @mikebikercanada

    @mikebikercanada

    Жыл бұрын

    You’re welcome! So glad you found it helpful regarding the vehicle fabric! So far I haven’t been able to notice any smell or off gassing. But I’ve wondered that myself. Luckily Im mostly camping in colder seasons so I haven’t had to experience any sheltering hot days. Im guessing that might have more of an affect on the off gassing of the tape/adhesive. A good way to avoid any potential off gassing would be to tint the windows and that way the standard silver reflective would look solid black up against the windows. I believe that might’ve my next upgrade! Keep me posted on your build! All the best! Mike

    How would you keep your self warm over night if the temp drops to -10 Celsius. Is there a way we could install a propane heater safely? Or would you go with a battery heater?

    Hey! Thanks for watching. Good question! I’ve only been sleeping in it at trailheads for fall hiking trips in the Adirondacks. Don’t plan on using this setup in the dead of winter. It’s already gotten to -4 Celsius overnight and I’ve been cozy in my warmer mummy sleeping bag. I think it’ll start dropping to -10 soon so I’ll be able to give that a try too. I would be too nervous to use a propane heater unless it vented properly. Maybe use a camp stove to boil water and pour it into a Nalgene bottle to sleep with in the sleeping bag? That might work. An electric heat pad could work too. maybe a large power bank will be able to keep it going all night. I may have to do some research on that! What are your thoughts? Mike

    Hi! Have a question...I have a GMC Terrain and stopped to have a car auto place remove my back seat so I could have more room for my bed. They said NOT to because it disables the air bag system! Is this true?

    Oh, possibly. But I don’t have rear airbags. My front are still enabled. No cables were disconnected when taking the seats out. Your terrain might have seat sensors in the rear?

    How do you actually sleep in the car? Is the car on for the AC or are the windows cracked open alittle, or what?

    You ever worry that you’ll use up all the oxygen in the car if you don’t crack the window? New cars are sealed pretty tight.

    Hi Monica, I use my setup to sleep at trailhead parking lots before hiking/backpacking. I’ve only done urban parking a couple of times, and both times was in a Walmart lot with a great experience. Hope that helps! Mike

    the curtain over the front seats looks odd, i would suggest putting the velcro on the back and having the curtain be behind the front seat instead, it's less conspicuous that way

    is there a support point between the front 2x4s and the spare tire well for the two beams underneath the plywood?

  • @mikebikercanada

    @mikebikercanada

    2 ай бұрын

    None needed in my case. The wood supports rest on a lip that runs along g the back of the trunk and they cross over the spare tire well unsupported and then are supported once the other side of the well by the cars’s frame. Hope that makes sense?

    @@mikebikercanada ok I see. So existing support points are not really that far apart, and would not cause board bending.
