Car Boot Sale 2024 Number 1. 03-03-2024

Ғылым және технология

Here we go again, another year of car boot sales (Flea market) and vintage tools too.
It was cold out there this morning and the vendor attendance wasn't as good as it could have been, never the less I found quite a few tools and three of them are from Draper tools. My favourite tool stall was there along with several others selling tools. I hope to go along next week too so stay tuned.

Those are ampere clamps for measuring current draw in amperes. You have to catch only single wire with the clamps ( usually its live wire) in order to get readings ( meaning you have to either strip the cable and clamp only live wire) or you need to use some kind of a extender device that you will plug into socket and then you will plug your cable into the device, and that device will usually have dedicated wire parts isolated so that you can perform measurement. That way you can measure how much certain device draws current in a specific circuit, make sure to catch only single wire during measurement. In the video you are doing measuring oncorrect because that single cable contains 3 wires, ground live and negative or neutral. You need to clamp only live or neutral, but not both. Also wire must pass through the clamps entirely. You don't clamp with front part of pliers as you did in the video :) Sorry for my bad English hopefully i manage to explain the problem a bit :)

Thank you for the helpful explanation 👍 as you can see I have a bit of a learning curve with the amp clamp. I found a set of leads in my workshop that will work with the meter. Once again thanks for helping out and watching 👍👍👍👍👍

@@NashRathbone Glad i could help. I started working with electrical wiring in my household so i'm a bit into that :) If you need any advice and i'm able to help, don't hesitate to ask. Hope tools will serve you well and last long. Regards from Serbia

Hi as someone has already pointed out you need to have the clamp around an individual conductor for the meter to give you a reading. 3 core and double insulated cables on appliances can't be measured as the current flowing through the live and neutral cancel each other out so the meter would read 0.0A. Also the meter you have can only measure AC current with the clamp, you couldn't measure a car battery current output on start for example, you'd need a meter that can measure DC clamp measurements. To be honest, as an electrician there's not a lot of use a DIYer will get from the clamp function of a clamp meter, as there's not many places in the home that you have access (safely) to single conductors. The only times really I've used an AC clamp meter is on meter tails and in the consumer unit when fault finding..... NIETHER of which should be undertaken by unqualified persons. But with a set of leads added you've got a bargain of a multimeter for £6 and the function of the clamp meter Sparky's use most is to use the clamp to hold the meter onto something hands free whilst using the leads lol. All the best!! John.

Thank you for taking time to leave this comment 👍 The clamp meter is another one of those things I decided I needed to learn about. I have made a lead with a short length of the external insulation removed for access to individual wires for the clamp. I also found a set of leads in my workshop so I can play around with the meter. Once again thanks for your comment and for watching 👍👍👍

No worries. Funny you should say about the lead you made. I was going to mention that some electricians make a short extension lead up with the middle having the outer insulation removed for access to the conductors and protective conductor (earth) so they can fault find appliance issues as you can measure current and leakage to an extent. I decided not to mention it as I can’t advise or recommend people ‘tinkering’ with cables or removing insulation but as you’ve mentioned it I can bring it up . As long as you know that 230v AC can give you a spicy tingle even when you have RCDs or RCBO protection checking appliances etc with a single insulated wire can be done with a healthy dose of respect for electrons should they escape lol. Love the car boot finds, so keep em coming please. 👍

I have been doing just that and now have an idea how the clamp meter works. Apparently you have to test individual wires and not the whole cable. Thanks for watching 👍👍👍
