    Hi David, thanks a lot for this video. I was looking forward for this one in particular. May I give you a piece of advice, I’d suggest you to visualize on the screen the keys pressed. It would be useful for the one of us not really accustomed to keyboard shortcuts. Thanks!

    Hi Michele, I did experiment with that before, but it wasn't a popular visual aid for the majority of the audience. So I decided to remove it. The only shortcut here is 'm' to show and hide the mask.

    Good morning, first of all I really appreciate the fact that capture one has a face (you), I think it is very important and was decisive for the purchase. My question: what is the difference between clarity and structure? (I have seen that you only make minor adjustments to the structure). Another doubt, what is the use of hue in the white balance? i never use Thank you, and please, continue with this excellent work, even more important these days

    Hi Jose, In simple terms, Clarity affects contrast but only in the midtowns. Structure is a great way to enhance fine details like architectural elements, fur, landscape details and so on. And thank you!

    Answering Abdul's question about the opacity in the brush tool, the opacity sets the maximum density of the entire brush stroke, that is from the moment you touch the tablet with the pen to the moment you lift it. When you use the brush, Capture One is making multiple prints of the brush shape along the stroke as you move the pen, and the Flow parameter defines how dense is each individual print. So, the practical difference between the Opacity and Flow is that with 10% of opacity and 100% of flow, your entire stroke will be 10% dense flat; while with 100% of opacity and 10% flow, your stroke will become denser the more you're brushing one area without lifting the pen, until it reaches 100%. You may want to combine the two. For example, if you set the Flow to 10% and Opacity to 50%, then as you're brushing without lifting the pen, the density of the mask in the same area will be increasing by 10% until it reaches 50%. If you then lift the pen and start brushing the same area again, it will be adding another 50% of density in 10% steps.

  • @gregory.chalenko

    @gregory.chalenko

    4 жыл бұрын

    As much as I like Capture One, I think the density parameter in Lightroom's brush is more intuitive and practical. It basically sets what target density you are painting in the area, and it replaces what mask density was there before. Simply speaking, if in some area the mask was already 100%, you can set the density of the brush to 50%, and as you paint, the areas of the mask that used to be 100% will be reduced to 50%, while the areas that used to be 0% will increase to 50%. This way you don't have to use eraser to reduce the density of the mask, but instead you can explicitly definite, that you want this area to be 50% dense.

  • @gregory.chalenko

    @gregory.chalenko

    4 жыл бұрын

    In Capture One, the Opacity parameter of the brush doesn't have much sense indeed, as it doesn't really restrict the target opacity. If you keep painting lifting the pen between the strokes, you're gonna end up with 100% mask anyways, so all it does is introducing the difference between painting while keeping the pen on the tablet all the time and painting while lifting the pen between the strokes. And this only makes confusion without added benefits.

    Hi David, thank you so much for another great tutorial. I have been using C1 for some weeks now, so I am feeling more and more confident with it - thanks to you. During this time I have been exploring the tools, trying to understand it's implications on my pictures. On this tutorial you've used clarity and structure. I feel that while working on a small scale picture like you do on these tutorials it looks just great, but when I zoom and work on 100% - which I do a lot of times, I find both tools very destructive, much more than sharpness for instance. Would love to hear your thoughts on this, does it make sense?

    @@bobby350z not necessarily. IN RGB if you make the changes indicated in the video you are also changing color and contrast. Not in LAB color space which is what I use. In photoshop and Affinity you can do this with a blend mode as well as a brush. In fact there are color dodge and color burn blend modes that work only on the colors. IF you use macros or actions you can do both simultaneously. Again the way it works in RGB and LAB is different; in LAB you ONLY affect the colors not the contrast or luminosity, Both Photoshop and Affinity support LAB color space, Capture 1 does not which makes Capture 1 non transparent; it is a shortcoming. I use macros in affinity photo and with one click I have done both color burn and dodge, same can be done in photoshop. Capture 1 is not really set up to do dodge and burn efficiently...IT is in fact just the front end ( like lightroom was to photoshop).

    @@wrzlbrnth4092 Sure but I prefer not use PS. I try to get almost everything right in camera and only do basic pp in LR. Now shooting more tethered, being able to do all this in C1 makes life simpler for me. I also watched a few youtube videos on dodge/burin in PS and most of them did the same thing mentioned in this video. Would be nice to see what difference are in real life shots using the method here vs what you saying. I am not denying that PS will give you lot more control but again, it depends on the end result.

    @@bobby350z you should do what is right for you. I find the capture 1 engine unbelievable slow takes up to 0.5 hour to find ONE photo in a collection for me ( my collections have over 3000 pictures initially from a shoot and when processed I save tiff files and these collections are about 1100 photos). Capture 1 loses photos if a collection gets too big and drops them also from catalog. It does not support LAB color space which photoshop and affinity do support so its a real pain to put a lab color space photo in the catalog. they have good color but other products are just as good now. I did not buy the 2020 upgrade since its just a "maintenance" upgrade. Actually I mostly use the catalog feature since I dropped lightroom but it seems to have issues. I talked to their support team and they agree. I switched from photoshop to Affinity and have been getting free upgrades for 3.5 years..... no subscription. I probably will dump Capture 1 and go to Darktable which is free and their catalog system works better and is much faster... my color dodge/burn macro in affinity does everything that was done in the capture 1 video with 1 click and I can adjust the outcome. Capture 1 was just not made for this. I dont have the time to do all that fiddling that was done in the video since most shoots I do are 3000-5000 pictures...
