Damn man. I'm a new dad and seeing What I would consider "a man's man" Wild Bill realize his failure as a father is both eye opening and scary. You can see him holding back tears and he either doesn't know how or just can't tell his son he loves him. His son is very nice about it but you can see the resentment. Fathers are important fellas and you can never get lost time back, be there for your kids.

They have a huge clashing of personalities. Zack was raised by his mom and she had issues with Bills lifestyle. Once Zack got into the business, his dad expected that his son would be the exact same thing he was and the teaching would be easy. Zack resented his dad and bill thought finally admitting what he did wrong (in a way that sounded like he was just repeating what he’d heard and not that he was actually sorry) would be all he needed to do or say to fix it and move on. Both men basically came right to each others door and one extra step by either one of them probably would’ve fixed some major issues. Bill really apologizing or saying he loved him. Or Zack trying to actually tell him the real issue instead of beating around the bush and giving off handed comments. Granted, bill did try to help Zack a few times and Zack was being a child about the lessons. Oil and water.

@@jdwylde7 Yeah, but to Bill it's all about Crab and money... OBVIOUSLY that was far more important to him than quality time with the family, as he thought: As long as i keep the money coming in, they'll be happy, fed and have a roof over their heads.. Such a capitalistic, one-street mindset doesn't resonate well with most people as it strips away the human/personal aspect of life and reduces it to nothing but money and work... The Wild Bill / Zach situation hits way too close to home for me.. This is so eerily similar to the relationship I have with my dad, it actually blows my mind.. watching their interaction as a third party was pretty eye opening for me. I totally understand where Zach is coming from. He wants so badly to be able to learn from his dad and more importantly have that ideal father / son type of bond, but time and time again Wild Bill breaks his son's heart and spirit. Deep down it's obvious Wild Bill does indeed love Zach and want the best for him, but he's totally burned the bridge. At a certain point there's just no coming back from it. And as heartbreaking as it is for both sides, it's not something that can be fixed anymore. There's still love but there's no potential for a meaningful relationship. I'm literally crying typing this. I see it all over Zach's face, all he wants is his dad to be proud of him.. but he knows deep down he never will be. The "you are your mother's son" line was the final blow. Wild Bill is completely unable to understand how he has broken his son's heart, he genuinely feels like Zach has no reason to feel hurt.. which makes the pain Zach feels even worse. Wild Bill tried to muster up a half-hearted apology but he can't stop himself from essentially calling his son soft. He just can't wrap his head around the fact that Zach is not able to let it go. He would if he could.

Sometimes fathers want their sons to follow in their footsteps so bad they forget that they are their own person and sometimes they don’t want to follow the same path. That’s when you either let a crew run over you and let them do as they please or you make sure the problem is solved and one man can destroy a whole crews attitude so if it is necessary the argument and the problem needs to be resolved where everybody drops anything started negatively by one employee.

Women are vindictive and all talk talk talk. I had a rig crew that tried to get me fired because I didn't "pay them" when I pulled out my ticket the consultant had signed and showed our billed hours that ended really quickly. Lol one of the hands that initiated all of that was in the passenger seat and when I pulled out my ticket book and slapped it down in front of the manager and asked him how I didn't pay them he just put his head down cuz he knew he had lied and his whole story got shot tf to crap. Needless to say I didn't get fired, the oil company got involved and told my company that if they messed with me they'd release all the rigs we had out for them and get me hired with another company. Moral of the story, its hard being a boss and usually you're in that position for a reason and the hands can't run the show or nothing gets done or people start getting hurt

This is a bitter sweet story. Time with your children is precious. I know bills have to be paid. I understand as a single working mom how difficult it is to not have that luxury of time. My son is nearly 30. I am blessed that my son understood that bills had to be paid, but it never stopped the guild I felt leaving him with family and friends to be minded. For any young parents out there, I suggest that if you can jobshare or do part time work and afford to live, spend the time with your children. They grow up in the blink of an eye. Jake is in a very lucky position, most young people would kill for. I just hope that he realises it before he looses the opportunity to someone else.

As a father I can relate to Bill and his son Zach. I haven’t always done my best being a father. Even fathers make mistakes unintentionally too. Nobody is perfect. I think Bill honestly wants the best for his son Zach, but sometimes there’s just a difference in personalities. My son hasn’t spoken to me in over a month.

i sympathize with captain bill and his son. he did what he thought was right by providing for his familly. even tho it meant he was away. just like people in the military...on the road truck drivers. it sucks. but maybe there wasnt many options for bill back in the day. i imagine its hard to be a close great father and be there for your kids and have a sucessful career. i assume it just wasnt an option for capt bill. i understand his sons perspective too. but hes also gotta realize his dad isnt getting any younger. better late then never. work through it. you dont know what you have til its gone. coming from a person who lost their dad at 16 years old. learn. and spend time with him while you still can .

Let's sit around a table and tell the guy he's a pos. It would have been far more appropriate to say hey things aren't working out with you and all of us. You're performance isn't up to our standard and I disgust it with the crew and we're going to proceed on without you. Grab your things we have a flight for you to return home. But it's TV and and they gotta do that kinda trash

Regarding Bill and Zack: My dad worked law enforcement for 44 years. He worked 60 to 80 hours a week, so I didn't get to spend every day with him. Partly my fault as well. But he always made sure we were taken care of and did everything for us. He was a great dad. We did get to spend a good amount of time together throughout life, though. But the times he missed with us, he told me that he regretted working so much before he passed away at the age of 64. But he never talked down to us. He did tell us to get thicker skin and not take things to heart and to turn the other cheek. I feel for Zack. I would be crushed if my dad talked to me the way that Bill did to him. Tough love is fine, but to have an ego so insanely out of this world like Bill is a whole other thing.

That’s why the greenhorn hazing makes no sense unless they truly deserve it. That greenhorn in the brenna a made all those guys more money whilst simultaneously being harassed by a “veteran” who walked around and barely did his job. Seniority doesn’t mean a god damn thing. Angel Hernandez is a good example of being a “veteran” with “tenure” but absolutely sucking at a job.

He runs his own boat and a different crab season was starting, I’d the deckhand didn’t leave right now to go home and start fishing for those crab, he would lose a lot of money. Deckhand staying on the boat with Jake and finishing out the season was not going to make him and his family nearly enough money then returning home to fish his own boat. That’s why it was so crucial the deckhand leave right then and there, the deckhand thought he would’ve been done before the other crab season started, to avoid any layoff in between. So ultimately it puts Jake in a huge bind since he’s down a guy on the boat, and he has to return to Dutch harbor to drop him off

What Bill should have said to Zack was “I spent 10 months a year out here away from you and the rest of the family because I have no idea how to be a husband and a dad I was and I am a coward”. But in his smug deity he thinks he’s a man’s man.
