Any pirate enthusiast is familiar with William Kidd - though some would argue he wasn't a pirate. Entire books have been written trying to vindicate his reputation. He is most famous for the ill-fated privateering voyage, in which he captured only three prizes - one being a fishing boat - allegedly buried his treasure, and ending in his hanging. But, did he deserve it?

About a year after my wife and I were married we went to a funeral at my family cemetery which has graves going back to the 1700's. She asked about the name on the large stone at the entrance to the cemetery and I told her that it was the name of the family patriarch, the first descendant who settled in America... and he had been a wealthy Privateer. She said "You've got to be kidding me. My grandmother's maiden name is Kidd, and we're descended from the family of Captain Kidd." We always joke that it was fate that brought two pirate families together.

Very nice overview. Sadly even a full 30+ video is not enough to include all of the juicy details of Kidd but honestly I think this is the best way to make a video of him. The scenario is so complex already so not all nitty gritty fits in. Cheers!🏴☠️

After listening to the pirate history podcast, I thought "The Trial of William Kidd" could actually make a pretty good movie. There is a lot of doccumentation to work with to keep it historical.

Just discovered that I’m descended from Captain William Kidd. Pretty cool to be descended from a famous privateer turned pirate.
Another great video. Thank you for such quality content, your love for the subject is matched only by your research of the same.
Fantastic content and great information
I've been following your channel for a while, and i must say that the quality has significantly increased. Absolutely stellar video, and the song at the end was the cherry on the top. Kudos to you my friend
Always a great day when G&G drops some knowledge
Enjoyed the video mate! So interesting how this individual became so famous...maybe the most famous pirate of all.

THE ONE PIECE IS REAAAAAAAAAAL
Oh, if you’re ever in London (near the Tower of London) the Captain Kidd pub is nearby, and a bit further is the Prospect Of Whitby pub, where the body of Captain Kidd was hung over the Thames (something to do with the Thames tide washing over the body of the executed pirate a few times before the body was taken down) the pub has a walkway to the side leading to the Thames beach, and behind the pub is a gibbet and noose.
The anticipation is unreal! 🏴☠️

Have you ever looked much into Scandinavian piracy/famous Scandinavian pirates after the Viking age? I know for a brief period of time Sweden and Denmark had small colonial holdings in north America and the Caribbean, and seafaring has been such a foundational aspect of their society for so long.
@GoldandGunpowder

Sweden wanted to conduct privateering out of its colony on the Delaware but it didn't work out except one mysterious raid. Denmark owned the island of St. Thomas which operated as a freeport for pirates in the late 17th century, much to the ire of the other nations. Sweden also maintained a lucrative privateering operation during the Great Northern War, in which many British Jacobites were employed
Thank you for this documentary quality video!

Thank you! A friend of mine was just talking about Captain Kidd the other day. How coincidental you made a video about him a couple days later. 👍
He is definitely the most interesting pirate out of all of them.

Uhm no
My introduction to this guy was Captain Kidd from World Heroes. But its awesome to finally learn the true story about this guy. In fact, its quite fascinating.
Now to the execution dock, I must go
…..He was reported walking around New York but they arrived two months after he was sighted. ‘Missed him by ye olde much.”
This is so far from the legend I heard of him being a good and honest man forced into piracy by his crew very interesting and educational
Well at least he is the mascot for the USS Kidd and they get to fly the Jolly Roger
Everyone one piece Meanwhile me: Ah so this Ryuji’s persona
🏴🏴☠️
He was from Dundee? Interesting.
CAPTAIN KIDD I THINK I HEAR OF THAT NAME BEFORE THE ONE PIECE IT’S REALLLLLL!!!!
Greetings, I am attempting to write a book with pirates on it. I want it to be more historical rather than Hollywood. Your videos are very helpful. Have you any information about the pirate John Philip Beare. I am trying to get caractor right and there is not much info on him. Thank you for your hard work.
Can you also make videos about the lives of Calico Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, Samuel Black Sam Bellamy, Edward England, and the whydah Galley please?
WAS THAT A ONE PIECE REFERENCE!?!?!?!?!
Fun fact: If you watch Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates, their version of Hook seems to be modelled after Kidd
Hello! This channel is incridible, and it became one of my favorite things. Its rare to see such quality, i think! I don‘t think it‘s a coincidence that Kidd was maybe the most well-financed pirate in history. People investing money in your business is as much of a curse as it is a blessing, because those people want their money back with interest. And that means the more they invest, the more you are actually in the red. Dangerous, especially if your venture is high-risk.

Gem video tho
I have a slight alternate history question Henry Morgan before his flagship the Oxford below up was planning on attacking Cartagena De Indes, if the spark never occured that blew up the powder magazine and they attacked the city do you think he would have been successful. As it was quite a formidable city and although the raid in 1697 was successful that still required a french naval contigent and almost 2,000 soldiers and buccaneers.

Long blade plus low hanging rigging (even more if the ship has taken damage) is ussually a bad idea! Cutlasses, small swords (if they could get their hands on one), daggers, falchions, and dusacks where much more prefered due to being shorter.
:)
Life in 2023 in the West is very.. Judoist like. -Me and Cpt Kidd.
"I already have a video about what food they ate" uhhhh, no. You have like 10 videos about their food. And thats okay with me :D
Captain Kidd was a man of action and a hero. He could have lived a charmed life in high society without a care in the world, but chose adventure instead.
Lol the one piece is real.
Was that really necessary to say “shitting streets of India “? Completely took me out of the video.
