'Captain America: Civil War': Joe & Anthony Russo Explain Black Panther’s Superpowers

Ойын-сауық

Just before the release of Captain America: Civil War, Collider's own Steve Weintraub took part in an exclusive conversation with directors Joe & Anthony Russo that lasted over an hour. We’ve talked to them about Avengers: Infinity War, what it will take to get a Black Widow movie, the chances of getting an LGBT character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, their directing technique, and what it takes to get a Marvel directing gig. Now we wrap up with a collection of miscellaneous topics.
For example, they talked to us about the specifics of Black Panther’s superpowers in Civil War:
What is his power? Is it the costume? Is it that he’s been training like Jason Bourne?
JOE RUSSO: It’s a combination of everything. Certainly the costume gives him a level of protection and invulnerability because of the material that it’s made of.
ANTHONY RUSSO: Which is vibranium, for non-fans, and it’s the same material that Cap’s shield is made of.
JOE: It can absorb the energy, so it’s much harder to damage him as a character, and you can see that in the movie he can take a lot of punishment including bullets to the face. He is very well trained. He’s from one of the wealthiest countries on the planet, so there’s great infrastructure there; very technologically advanced country. So he’s been trained at the highest levels to fight, but he also has his own superpowers, which derive from the mythology of his nation. Those will be explored more in Black Panther, it’s clearly evident when he’s able to fight the Winter Soldier out of costume, and go toe-to-toe with him, that he is an enhanced individual.
I’m curious if they mean he’s “enhanced” because he’s a suit, or if he’s “enhanced” in the same way that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were enhanced, which was by the power of the Mind Stone. We still don’t know the location of two of the remaining Infinity Stones-the Time Stone and the Soul Stone-but since Kevin Feige hinted that Doctor Strange’s Eye of Agamotto is the Time Stone, perhaps the Wakandans are keeping the Soul Stone safeguarded.
The Russos also addressed the rumor of Gwyneth Paltrow having a deleted scene in the movie or if Pepper was ever going to be part of the plot [spoilers ahead for Civil War]:
ANTHONY: No, it was just one of those odd rumors. Look, we did consider very early on in the process we did consider the idea-here’s the thing: we really like the story point that Pepper had left Tony because we wanted Tony in a very vulnerable spot in this film.
JOE: The choices he makes in this movie are very complex, so we thought it was very important to have him off-balance as a character.
ANTHONY: Emotionally vulnerable, more emotionally vulnerable than we had ever seen him from the start of the story. So her having left him was always an important story point to us and very early on we may have explored whether or not we needed to tell that in a scene or not, but I think we decided pretty readily that we could handle it the way that we did in the film.
Watch the full interview above or check out the time index below for a full list of topics.
Joe & Anthony Russo
0:07 - Why they were led to making Captain America 3 into Civil War.
2:24 - If they had other titles than “Civil War”.
3:20 - What exactly are Black Panther’s powers.
4:45 - When they realized people were really going to spark to Black Panther.
5:44 - If there was a character or hero they really wanted to put into the film but didn’t, and the challenges of getting in Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Black Panther.
7:11 - Why they feel the movie is a “psychological thriller” and films they used as influences.
8:33 - What Civil War has to say about today’s political landscape.
10:53 - Squashing the rumor of Gwyneth Paltrow’s involvement in the movie.
11:45 - Which was more grueling: filming the action or editing it?
13:20 - Anything in the finished film they wish they could fix, and the last scene that was delivered from the VFX department.
14:55 - The voice on Zemo’s voicemail.
15:29 - If there was a debate over killing a character or characters in Civil War.

EXACTLY!!!!!! This could have gone SOOO WRONG. They characterized him as a rational, reasonable and logical character. He wasn't jut a badass who happened to be black. He was a truly realised character. Seriously, the final scene with him and Zemo just solidified his character. He evolved into a man of justice not vengence. He actually won the battle of morals in that movie.

People always want characters killed off in order to increase tension or stakes but Civil War did the best job at it. Killing characters is way trickery with comic characters because you are potentially killing a franchise that can be enjoyed or on the other hand, killing off a character with everyone knowing that they'll be back (cough* cough* superman) is also a waste.

+Flip.555 showing balls in movies ain't that far from showing balls in actual life - that's not exactly a sight to behold and not everyone likes them shoved up their throats, lol. In all seriousness - Russos said it a multiple times - there are people who watch movies only because of one character. Alienating any audience that way ain't that far from "I don't give a shit about audience whatsoever" (*cough* Snyder *cough*). These movies are supposed to be entertaining for people, not to be the display of somebody's ego.

Егор Зворыкин I don't think art and entertainment are THAT different. Russos have a lot of creativity on display, it just never comes off like they do it for the sake of doing it - nor they do it just to please the audience. Not every "art" has a value either. Someone makes painting with his own shit - art by definition, shit in perspective.

It was an intelligent film that far surpasses all these little "marvel" ones you been accustomed. Instead of misquoting Snyder and using it as a platform to get your point across, come to the realization that the Batman Versus Superman is the best thing you will experience in a movie theater, by far.

"Psychological thriller." Yep. Because the entirety of zemo's plan hinges on a correct read of the psychology of his two targets: Stark & Rogers. All of his manipulations hinge on a good psychological read of Stark and Roger's motivations and character. Moreover, most of the follies of the two mentioned characters are hinged on the fact that they're in emotionally vulnerable places in their life. Stark's girlfriend just left him. Roger's "best girl" just died. They both make dumb decisions because well, they're not the best versions of themselves.

I really liked the way they tackled the character death question. Sure, there're a lot of behind-the-scenes considerations on lost profits vs. often bemoaned lack of stakes; but this is the situation where it would have been an easy way out. Can't help recalling the end of Arrow season 1: I'd been so looking forward to how a certain character would deal with learning hard truths about two of his closest people, that the writers' decision felt like a personal offence and a huge nail in the coffin of my interest in the show. So happy the Civil War turned out the way it did!

and it's been Joe that we see each time in particular and not Anthony because when they were just beginning trying to break into film any way they could back in the Chicago days, Joe was originally pretty much just as interested in acting as he was directing whereas Anthony was perfectly content just behind the camera. I think this sort of dynamic between them has still always shone thru to this day, given that Joe is typically the one to more easily lean into being more vocal and animated than the somewhat shier Anthony. But they've always been in total lock step with their senses of humor, the drier and pitch black sarcasm (note the resume for Arrested Development and Community).

Tasi that 250 was split up differently since RDJ was not contracted to do this film a lot of the budget that would go into other parts of production such as vfx was used to pay him upfront instead of him getting points on the backend which he usually does which is why he makes like 40 million a movie cause he knows the movies will sell like hot cakes.

Liars. Disney/Marvel forced them to push Civil War out, and it's all because the company feared Batman v Superman. Seriously, before Civil War it was just Captain America 3, which would have included a redemption arc for Bucky judging by the details. There should have been a whole phase devoted to Civil War. I preferred Black Panther over Spider-Man. The latter felt tacked on in comparison. It's not a psychological thriller at all. It's a drama, and a poor one at that. One of three things happened: 1. The Russos are lying out of their butts. 2. Captain America: Civil War was shot as a psychological thriller but edited into a drama. 3. They have no idea how to make a psychological thriller. The collateral damage aspect feels like some sort of retcon in the final film. Funny thing is that the MCU is terrible when it comes to stakes. Even in Infinity War, stakes aren't truly felt until the finale.

Nobody wants to see Tony Stark emotionally compromised and/or vulnerable like you guys described!!!! Does Iron Man 3 ring a bell? and his stupid panic attacks and emotion. *yawn*

Tony in civil war is the most interesting that the character's been since the first iron man. If he were flawless and strong all the time he'd be boring.
