Bell UH-1H (Bell 205) / ZU-ELP
Cape Town Helicopters
Departure: Cape Town Waterfront Heliport (FADW), South Africa
Arrival: Cape Town Waterfront Heliport (FADW), South Africa
Date: 21th September 2013 / Seat: N/A
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cape Town Helicopters' UH-1H registered as ZU-ELP is seen operating a pleasure flight from Cape Town Waterfront Heliport (FADW) and performing some low level flying maneuvers. The flight took place on September 21st, 2013. Apologies for the audio quality, my camera surrendered due to the extreme flapping noise of the dual-blade rotor... and sorry for the yelling fellow passengers.

The pilot knows exactly what he is doing. It's very obvious the helicopter is capable of these maneuvers. Just ask any Vietnam Huey pilot or read Chickenhawk by Robert Mason

I wish I could convince my dad to record some of his stories on tape. It’s insane what that bird could do if you pushed it hard. Including going inverted. He flew Huey gunships out of Phan rang 70-71.

That looks exihlirating. My cousin was a Huey pilot WO1 with 159th med. det. during Vietnam (1970-71) and said that flying at treetop level when necessary was the most exciting and scary thing.

This is an excellent presentation of NOE (Nap of Earth) flying, that we were taught in U.S. Army flight training at Fort Rucker, Alabama. I have over 33,000 flight hours, and am an Experimental Test Pilot, Maintenance Test Pilot, Instructor Pilot, Safety Officer, Aircraft Accident Investigator and former logging pilot, Seismic Exploration pilot, and Aerial Application pilot, just to name a few, and found this pilot to be well trained and qualified at what he demo'd in the video.

Beautiful ride! Takes me back to the countless rides taken during my time in Uniform. I'd volunteer for anything to get another ride, hot or not, as a Corpsman. Got shot down twice and one breakdown in enemy territory . Took many rides twenty feet under slung to the cargo hook or down the Hell Hole on the CH 46/47. Worth it every time. Just one more ride! Thanks for this video!

Nothing like the feeling when the pilot rolls open the throttle and begins pulling in the power and the rotor blades start cutting into the air. The sounds of turbine, rotors and vibration of the ship as it becomes light on the skids. The ride begins. The army would train pilots to take off and land a huey then send them to Vietnam where they learned to fly a huey. An awesome aircraft!!

Those are normal maneuvers in that type of helicopter. By the way, my experience is with Bell 412's, 205's, V-22's, UH-1Y's, AH-1Z's, EH101's, and CH-46E's.

It reminds me the first time I fly in an helicopter! It was in 1970, on the atool Hao (French Polynesia), my colonel allows me with two more soldier, to fly round the atoll with a young leutnant whose job was to spread insecticids over the island. It was terrific, because he flies 5-10 meters over the coconut trees, climbing suddenly when one was higher, and finish by a "quasi- wing over" front of the control tower, where I use to be a controller! After the fly, the colonel ask him not to reproduce this, even when alone in the chopper! It was an "Alouette II", a good old french helico.

There are UH-1's Hueys that has twin engines.Bell Helicopter started building UH-1N's Hueys in the late 1970's if I'm not mistaking. The Air.Force,Marine Corps, and Navy have them. The Marines are upgrading their entire fleet of UH-1N'S to the UH-1S series. Any of you Marines out there, correct me if I'm wrong. The US Army chose the UH-60 Blackhawk instead of the UH-1N, because the UH-60 Blackhawk can carry a 11-man infantry sqad.Other than that, I think the army would have stayed with the UH-1Hueys because they served with distention in Vietnam.
