Cap Dance Test What It Is & What It Means!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Cap Dance Test is somewhat controversial with some claiming it means nothing. If we were talking only about subtle differences between two engines I'd agree. An engine with better grade on the dance is not necessarily a better engine. We aren't only discussing subtle differences!

Excellent video. I knew this test was a thing but didn't understand it until now.

Do you ever need to add oil between changes? And did this change after cleaning the breather? I'm trying to determine if my change is due to cleaning or other maintenance.

I rarely add oil...used to go as far as 10k between changes... now I stay at around 7.5k.

I've done about 5 cap tests on different vans all with a range of miles, om646, om651. Found the cap dances much more. However oil filler pipe is sump mounted, so believe this is the reason.

    Thanks - I think I’m an A+ with a little leak.

I'm looking at a 2004 T1N Sprinter van. I performed this test and found that the oil cap is just around or under the A+ level, maybe moves a little more than your example in the video. Could I be certain that the engine is okay, and that it's only a clogged breather or vacuum system leak, or should I be concerned that it's a bigger underlying problem? TIA

Even a grade C cap dance we can be certain the engine has no major blow-by issues. Of course this tells nothing of the many other problems an engine might have, so I shy away from saying it is certainly OK. Like high school, C's and D's are still passing and only suggest improvements can be made. Vacuum system and crankcase breather are likely suspects, though mild cylinder wear could cause the cap to dance anywhere between undetectable and not mild or totally horrific (grade F). This would also cause a strong oil burning smell in the exhaust that burns our nostrils a bit.

My budget only allows me to get the crankcase filter without the crankcase, also are you guys restocking on intercoolers for OM647 ? or where can you get a new one?

We don't stock or sell parts, generally. MillionMileSprinter is a good friend and where we get many parts, but I can't answer questions for his inventory.

Hi Bill, Just did the cap dance test on my 178k miles 2003 sprinter and was surprised it danced significantly! Engine runs well but did have to replace vacuum hose when v belt shredded and severed the hose Also I’m guessing crankcase breathers never been done so am I right in thinking these could be the cause?🤞 Many thanks for your videos, they have been a great help👏

Yes, vacuum leak will make the cap dance but sounds like you fixed that. Cleaning the breather may help settle the cap but don't go to extremes trying to fix a small symptom. In the video we show some really bad examples and I assume yours is not that bad. A dancing cap is like a cough... Could be cancer or could be a little dust in the air making me cough. If the dance stays small, don't worry.

Uneven distribution of heat due to injector failure over-fueling or "tune" modifications like EGR delete. EGR purpose is to control combustion temperature.

Wonder if this test can be done with all diesel vehicles

I've wondered this too, and from trying it on just two other brands I'll say "yes". One nice new diesel engine in a sedan showed a perfect cap resting, not dancing. An old beater truck that sounded like hell but kept going... danced like MC Hammer!

Is there a different between warm and cold engines ? Thy

  • @FloridaVanMan

    @FloridaVanMan

In theory, yes. I encourage folks to test the cap dance both cold and warm, although I've never found much difference in the results. Any test can be flawed by an unknown factor like the dipstick not seated. This hot & cold idea encourages folks into repeating the test a second time. A second test to verify the first result is never a bad idea.
