I am Irish, Scots, Welsh and Black Forest German as well. I can feel the rivers run through my soul with the music of my (our) peoples pouring in my broken heart. Cheers, mate.

When my father first heard this song, I watched as his eyes grew wide and he just sat there silently crying until he was shaking trying to hold it in. I now have the same reaction every time I listen to it. Rest in peace.

For my Mam and Dad, who died in Dublin at the age of 35 and my Mam at the age of 39. All they stood for rings out over Dublin in this beautiful music.

This was a piece they used in 1996 Riverdance,I cried it's so beautiful

For my dad who passed away 3 days ago...I love you pops, see you at the pearly gates.

This is definitely one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have heard, I remember hearing it for the first time years ago at a Riverdance performance.

Yes me too, that's where I 1st heard it, and riverdance starts to tap dance half way through, it's absolutely stunning

My grandfather requested this be played when they spread his ashes into the body of water of which he wanted to be spread in. He died before he got a chance to make it to my wedding so my family played it randomly without my knowledge at my ceremony and i completely lost it. Half the people that were there that werent even of celtic descent started crying as well. The most beautiful and powerful song ive ever heard :-)

Im not Irish, im Hispanic but my love for the Irish culture and music goes beyond any borders. The people, the lifestyle, everything about it is beautiful and mystifying. The music always gets me. This song nearly brings a tear to my eye and it has no lyrics, much like other classical pieces in history. Much love from the U.S....

one of my all time favourite peace's of music.may all who are sad and who hear it be comforted.

I love this song/tune. Music was not part of my life until after I turned 69 years old. Then I taught myself to play the GHB, the SSP, the Native American flute and the Irish tin whistle, in that order. I am now 72 and I am playing the first 3 minutes of this tune on my tin whistle in key D. I will soon have the entire piece memorized. I will be so proud to have accomplished this personal challenge. Thank you, Davy Spillane for creating this masterpiece.

Keep up the great work because people who don't play will never feel the great satisfaction of completing a piece of music.It makes us understand the hard work that people like David put in.

I was in Ireland two months ago and I first heard this beautiful piece being played by a talented man at the Glendalough monastery. At that moment, I fell in love with Ireland and never wanted to leave. Just listening to this takes me back. The music sounds as if it came from heaven, and Ireland seems to me a place blessed by God and the faeries.

I know I’ve commented it before, but every few years I have to return to say , this is the song I want played at my funeral. It’s just so hauntingly beautiful.

My mother and I went to see Riverdance about 4 to 5 years ago, and when this song played, I burst into tears. One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Ever.

my soul is singing in tears when I hear this. I know little of irish music or the instruments being played or the history of this character. I know only that this music speaks universally to those whose hearts are open to hear

Three for me as well, and I have the same experience. It is like the music is calling me to a home I've never seen but feel in my heart.

This beautiful lament, played wonderfully on the Ullean pipes, cries out deeply to those with a spot of Scottish or Irish blood in their veins. It touches the collective core or who we are. But aside from that, it is a beautiful lament to all who chance to hear it, in this case, a lament to a son. We can only lament the past. We can’t lament the future. It is proper from time to time, in this human condition, to lament our past. Whether it be of loved ones gone on, loves lost, special times of our lives, events or special places…..we all lament, and it is good. But as the strains of this touching song fade at the end, it is a perfect reminder that, like this song, there is a time for the lament to end, and to once again turn from the past…carrying with us the beauty and memories, but focusing on that which we can’t lament. The future is unwritten, so we must boldly and bravely journey forward with hope and aspirations, and a touch of the knowledge that our lives, actions and deeds may be part of someone else’s lament in years to come. Make it a lament that will make those who remember also smile through their tears.

Seriously, this is like saying Japan and China are the same, wow....

I'm an electronic music fan mainly, but the Irish Uilleann Pipes are truly beautiful. These Uilleann masters literally have to work the sound out of them every second of a performance to create such emotion. When combined with orchestration as here the result transcends music. Truly magical.

BEST song off of the Riverdance soundtrack - such extreme raw emotion...

Nazareth has been using this beautiful song in the begginning of their concerts for some time now!!brilliant

Lots of Fleadh Cheoil, which is music on the streets and in the pubs. You can join in yourself and play. You will love it. You must go and watch the beautiful game of hurling its part of our Gaelic culture and is over 3000 years old...Its our national sport. Lots of videos of hurling on youtube, you might like it...anyway my friend nice meeting you and I wish you and yours a happy and peaceful life....

I may be deceived once again, yet still I go to that stone on the point by the lake waiting to hear the whisper of footsteps. "Nay, laddie, it's not love that deceives but the wicked empty heart that loses it's truth and shatters its icy shell again and again and again, to awaken no more in the place we had come to know." It's the voice repeating, "It is gone, it is gone", that deceives.

This is so beautiful yet I wonder why there is so much hate in this world? We have the ability to create such great music like this but have it in us to self destruct. Walk in peace and then stand for a while and listen to this beautiful music.

+Matt Hall The song is the lament of the hero cu Chulainn. The story comes from a series of myths and legends called the Ulster Cycle. In the final section of the story there is a battle where Chulainn fights and kills a young warrior. Chulainn later discovers the warrior is his son, and this song is his lament. (Having sons of my own , the sound of it tends to hit home, and it probably touches something of my own Celtic blood as well.) There are all sorts of nefarious goings on that lead to this terrible accident taking place. The cycle is a great read. There is a nicely written children's version by Rosemary Sutcliff, which I still read despite being in my fifties now. I hope this helps

A lament. This piece performed with so much expression by Spillane instantly evoked an image in my mind- of an old woman losing her last Son in war, alone and wailing in her empty home as she struggles to function with life's most basic, now grueling, chores. I see faded lyrics above as I write this long overdue message, suggesting my image may be "wrong," but I learned from this what a lament is to me- having never known the form before- and realizing it speaks (or should) to the core of us all, as we ride the sometimes painful waves of life. Just incredible.

Seamus Ennis' tutor is the best, and if your handy with hand tools and a lathe, have accurate rifle bores. can weld,braize and bend metals; and if you can find a copy which I am lucky enough to proudly own, Wilbert Garvin wrote "the" book on how to make a set from scratch. Good luck. They must be the most haunting instrument the ingenuity of man has ever devised. I'd give a dangle berry for a full set with regulators.I've made some superb fiddles, but those pipes are a tough order to knock up.

I know, right! Scottish pipes sound so harsh and grating. These pipes have such a nice, mellow tone. They almost sound Middle Eastern. Truly beautiful.

When those of us have experienced our hearts torn in half we try to find something good out of it rather than it all being sad. The good in this is being able to share such a sweet sound for others to enjoy and touch their hearts.

I first heard this beautiful song when it was played by Davy Spillane during his appearance in Riverdance, it lives on ...

A hard day will find now the end. After a bad car accident, and god bless, nobody get hurt, had to catch the train home. Now i m sitting there and hear that wonderful sound on my way home. I miss my soul land and i hope it will going to happened that i see the land of Bonnie Scotland.

@guy Mackenzie The music is obviously powerful, but when set with the scenery it is even more moving. Add to that the bit of prose and it grabs my heart. The line " Oh laddie,Are you going just now?Can’t you stay awhile longer?Sit and we will share the last golden dropOf the wee dram that is you and me.This chokes me up. My father passed when I was two, so never knew him. I do my best to spend time with my kids as often as possible.

found it again.... this music goes directly to my very soul cant fully explain, but it absolutely overwhelms me each time i hear it...tears and emotion, sadness yet hope... wore out the riverdance tape someone borrowed me once i got to this...wept mate, like i'd lost someone...welling up now, wtf!

Riverdance last night was SUPERB I found Tara Howley's rendition of Caoineadh Cú Chulainn played on uilleann pipes especially moving.

I'm not even Irish, but it has the same effect on me. Just lived in Cork for a few years. Maybe it is the closeness to the vikings that surface...

Something about those pipes that touches something very deep down in the soul ... if there is such a thing. I'm a cynic, but hearing this makes me wonder .... !!!

There must be somethjng to DNA memory. So many from other countries feel kinship when listening to Celtic music. My family came from Iverness to America in the early 1700's. I have felt connected to anything Scottish since I was young.

More than a few shades of Celt knocking around the British Isles. Irish, Scots, Welsh, Manx even cornish. If you've got English blood in you there's every chance you have some Celt too. But anyway, we all come from the same place if you go back far enough and good music is god music no matter where you're from.

If you can take it back as far as the beaker people and the neolithic I promise to be genuinely impressed. Here's an interesting fact, apropos of nothing; as much as 0.5% of the male human population may be descendants of Genghis Khan.

Oh my God theres something so intricately beautiful about this soul-touching piece. I was born in England but this kind of music is a part of me somehow, I feel so connected to it. One day I will travel around Ireland and also Scotland. Its hard to explain, but a missing part of me is always found when I listen to this kind of music. I dont understand why, but I have to follow it to its source.

You will always be a son of Eire and you will always be welcome in our lands. You have pride in your heritage and that I can respect a chara.
