OK, vocaloid history lesson. ^_^ Kaito and Miku are brother and sister in the video. To be more specific, they are expies of the infamous Borgia siblings--Kaito is Cesare Borgia; Miku is Lucrezia Borgia. (While Len bears most similarity with the figure of Alfonso de Aragon.) Here are the details: The whole story of Cantarella is loosely based on the story of the Borgias. In the video, Kaito and Miku are members of the "Vocalgia" family. They were very close as children--seeing themselves as two of a kind, but in time their feelings for each other grew into something which they knew can not be. This tormented both of them. Also, there are already plans for Miku to be married off to another powerful family. Something her own brother, Kaito, is painfully aware of. (What's more, since he's the one doing the conquering, he's the direct beneficiary of Miku's upcoming match as it would give him the power and the support he needs to conquer the land under his family name.) Kaito is an extremely ambitious but borderline tyrannical man who would do anything it takes to get what he wants; however, he has one soft spot: it turns out his love for power is only surpassed by his love for his sister. And when he sees the handsome and charming Len, he begins to grow increasingly jealous and insecure over the fact that Miku might actually come to like--even love--him in time. His heart grew dark. It got so bad he decided that he was going to be the first to take her--even if it means using his family's trademark poison--La Cantarella--to do it. But in the end he couldn't bring himself to do it. He desired Miku with all his heart, but he couldn't bring himself to "hurt" her. And decided to just lay bare his feelings for her. Luckily for him...Miku was well aware of his dark intentions and would have willingly went along with what he wanted to do even if he didn't choose to restrain himself in the last minute. It turns out Miku was as devious as he was and reciprocated his forbidden love. She agreed to be his for one night, and it made them both very happy. Miku then assured Kaito that though she was married to another man, Kaito would remain her true love. With that Kaito was able to let Miku go to the altar, and she married Len without a hitch. Unfortunately, all of this didn't last very long. Kaito's resentment and jealousy never subsided and only grew as time went by--especially when he saw that Miku actually did find a measure of happiness with her husband. He couldn't take it anymore, and he decided to kill Len. Despite knowing full well, that doing so would damn his ambitions and bring the wrath of a powerful family upon his head. He didn't care anymore. He hated Len, and if getting rid of him meant having to fight against all the lords of the land at once--so be it. Kaito slipped some poison in Len's drink (or used some weakening drug, so that Len could be led outside and killed by Kaito personally). Miku...was confused. And horrified. She knew exactly what was going on, but the whole scenario was so twisted and cruel--so out of hand; she was torn between the man she loved all her life, and the man she had come to love in another way. The part of her that loved Kaito was also aware that what he did had grave consequences. She feared for his life...and in time...Kaito finally paid the price for his sins. He was killed in battle, presumably with the help of Len's family, and his dark ambitions were put to an end. The Vocalgia was powerful no more. Miku survived though. Her tenacity got her through in the end and after Kaito's downfall she either lived alone or married another man out of practicality, and judging from her clothes she continues to be well-off despite the loss of her family prestige. The years then passed...Miku matured, and she remained quite beautiful, but no matter how much time has passed she still couldn't forget the dark brother who loved her so madly and desperately--and whom she loved in turn. She visits his grave as often as she could, and is often haunted by his memory and his apparition--wanting so much to see and touch him again. And, near the end? It's heavily implied that this is exactly what happens. After their earthly tragedy has ended--the forbidden lovers have reunited in death. 1507 is the year Cesare Borgia fell in battle--the year Miku "lost" Kaito; 1519 was the year Lucrezia Borgia passed away--the year Kaito "found/caught" Miku again.

i can't help but find it amazing how in videos like these, Len isn't mentioned whatsoever in the actual song lyrics nor gets a singing part at all but he still dies.

Did anyone notice the hint at the end that Rin gets revenge for Len by killing Kaito? The flash of Len replaced by Rin as Kaito's blue rose gets crushed and scattered in the wind. Gosh that plot twist is AMAZING! 3:00

I think its more of a crushing defeat since Kaito(if we follow this version of the Borgia story) will be killed by random rebelling soldiers in Navarra rather than in his humiliating defeat in Italy.

Cantarella can be a potent poison or just a sleeping drug. Depends on the way it's used. I like this version most, especially the ending where Lucrezia/miku reaches her hand out at 1507 when Cesare/kaito died and he holds hers in 1519 when she died. The Borgias were well known for their use of poison in assasinations and the 2 siblings are suspected to have commited incest, but it's not proved to this day. Reunited in death! And such pretty art and animation.

Miku and Kaito here are supposed to be half-siblings, right? Miku is engaged or married to Len but Kaito killed him because he's in love-lust with his own sister. Rin, Len's twin, decided to avenge her brother

So i was playing Assassins Creed: Brotherhood today and decided to look up Cesare Borgia (a Charakter in the game who is also a real life Historical Figure) on Wikipedia where i found out that not only is there a Vocaloid song based on him but the two seperate Mangas that are based on his life. Learning all of this has been a very surreal experience.

This is actually about (I think, anyway, given the title) About Lucrezia and Cesare Borgia. No idea who Len is portraying, possibly on of Lucrezia's lovers/husbands but I can't recall if Cesare ever poisoned any of them. Cantarella was the Borgia Family's poison of choice.

For some reason, the image of the flower on her choker made me think that when Kaito took her flower he "took her flower," in the metaphorical sense and then Len (maybe Miku was distressed about the deflowering and Len found out or something) so he gave her his promise of love, replacing the empty feeling the "mystery deflowering" caused... I only came to this conclusion from this PV so it is wrong, it is just interesting what different images can do to the same song...

I also believe, as Kazukiyasa pointed out, that the PV parallels the story of the Borgias. Cesare (Kaito) and Lucrezia (Miku) were the children of Rodrigo Borgia, also known as Pope Alexander VI. The House of Borgia is known for their corrupt rule and crimes in Renaissance Italy. The PV seems to portray the incestuous relationship between Lucrezia and Cesare as well as the use of Lucrezia as a political pawn through her marriage(s). I assume Len is Giovanni Sforza and Rin might be Caterina Sfor

The ball continued long into the night. Though surrounded by so many dancing figures, the girl felt alone. Blue eyes stared, waiting. After her guests trickled out, she returned to her room. She undressed; sleeping only in a shift. A man in disguise finished his visit, leaving a rose for his prey. Dusk changed to dawn, and the girl woke as the first rays filtered in through her open window. This morning, just as mornings before, she discovered the bait left for her. Laying next to her was a single rose. As she walked down the hall, she heard a song coming from one of the many rooms. The door sat ajar, as if inviting her to enter. She peeked in. Ikr. So Miku is like Ciel, being fought over by two demons. Those demons being Kaito (Sebastian) and Len (Claude). They fight for Miku's heart (Ciel's soul). Soon enough, Kaito (Sebastian) is going to take it, but Len (Claude) steals it before he does. Now, Miku is slowly forgetting Kaito (Ciel is slowly forgetting Sebastian). Later on, Kaito kills Len (Sebastian kills Claude), but because of that, Kaito gets killed (Sebastian can't stop Ciel from being a demon). Now he never gets Miku's heart (Ciel's soul). ... But then again... Kaito and Miku are reunited in death (Sebastian and Ciel are together forever).
