As much as I wish I could afford the Canon RF 85mm 1.2, honestly my adapted Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG has been absolutely amazing. The adapter might be a bit of a hassle to live with, but the performance of that lens has been stellar. I really do wish we could get some native Sigma RF lenses, it's unfortunate Canon has taken this oppositional stance against third party manufacturers. I almost hate to say it but I have really considered trying to convert to Sony, primarily because of their more open platform.

Well said Kevin. Although to be fair, Canon hasn't been the only one guilty of this. Only now this year is Sigma finally releasing their very first lenses for Nikon Z. And I think Canon RF won't be far off now. I would say it was a marketing ploy of both brands. If they limited the competition, they could encourage more sales of RF glass. But now they probably realize they are heavily alienating those who just don't have the insane amounts of money to buy their lenses and so now they are finally opening up the tech to third parties.

Man, these videos are *chefs kiss*. While I'm constantly contemplating the to Sony, this is the exact type of stuff I'm looking for. It was interesting to see the colour of the images change between each image in the difference scenarios. Sometimes the Sigma appeared warmer and vice versa. One more thing to add, I think EF L glass had very distinct character. Now with mirrorless lenses, it seems to be a battle for sharpness. Insane sharpness isn't always everything for portraits and when the difference is so minor, and the character is not as apparent, charging double is just crazy.

Great review! Curious, have you had any issues with communication between the Sigma and the body? I have a Sigma and use it with my Canon R6 but it randomly shows 00 for aperture and won’t let me take a picture then. Would that be due to the adapter, the camera or the lens? That makes me worry whether I should continue buying Sigma versus Canon.
I am using Canon R5C and Sigma 24-70 lens. How do I change the aperture on the Sigma lens using the aperture ring on the lens? It is not doing anything. I have to use the Canon R5 screen or dial button.

Great analysis thanks. I think this is third party situation could turn out to be a bad business decision by Canon! I have been a Canon shooter for over 20 years and recently switched to Sony due to the availability of smaller, less expensive lens options (I cannot carry around as much gear as I used to). Sadly most of cinematic portrait videos i saw are not in focus on the eyes. Sadly. Anyway what do you shoot with?
Canon’s colors are warmer and I prefer them.
I'm 9 months out on my comments. I've been away from dslr/Rf type cameras for several years (I bought 3 Sigma Merrell's and have been so captured on what I was getting on IQ. I had a Pentax WA lens adaptor for 21), 28, 45, 70mm so I rocked for awhile at around 45mp. Ok back to the Canon for budget I'm shooting the R7 and what I'm finding is with adaptor I shoot my EF glass I forget it's there and feel no lack not shooting RF glass. I do have the 50 1.8 RF to bias off. As for 85mm I have the 85 1.8 EF which focuses much faster than the 85 1.2 and the keeper rate at 1.2 can be limiting. So if I look at the 2 limits the Sigma 1.4 looks to be where I go. How is it on AF speed.?
I just bought the R6 Mark II and EF Sigma Art 50 1.4. WOW this is the sharpest lens I've ever owned. Head to head with the RF 50 1.2 this is VERY close and it cost 1/3 the price. Not only that the Sigma is smaller (even with the EF R adapter), and focuses faster than the both the RF 50mm lenses. It sucks that there are no third party lenses for RF but unlike Sony and Nikon, the adapted lenses on RF work actually better than they did natively on DSLRs, and are on par with the RF lenses. I also got the Sigma 14-24 2.8 and it cost 1/2 of the RF 15-35 and is wider and just as sharp. Also for those of us in Canada, the Sigma lenses have 7 year warranties vs 1 year for the expensive Canon RF lenses. I had really considered the A7IV but the terrible 4K60 crop and the eye AF issues that you (and others) reported with the A7IV, along with the poor LCD and ergos made me wait to get the R6, but then the R6 II came out for slightly cheaper (here) than the A7IV so it was a no brainer!

I just downloaded the raw files and I love that you provide them. People talk about megapixels but when I output both to 32.7 MP (the A7IV native res), the R6 II files look sharper (when both nail focus). @@cooloox Wow! 5 years on the bodies? Insane. Just 1 year hear for Canon bodies and lenses. 7 Year for Sigma and 10 Year for Tamron! I did have the Sigma 85 Art when I had the 5D IV. It was supposed to be stellar but that was the only Sigma Art lens that didn't impress me. Either I had a bad copy, or the AF on the 5D IV with the Sigma just kept missing. But the 35, 14-24 and 50 are the best lenses I've ever used. I've compared images from the RF 15-35 (and the Sony 16-35 GM) and they are not any better optically than the Sigma 14-24... at least when compared to the first one I had. The micro detail at 14mm 2.8 was insane and the micro contrast too.
Canon has that extra mile in that "dreamy" effect in comparison with the sigma. Check out the last photo, the subject stands out better with the background being more hazy and soft and creamy.. Is it night and day? of course not. The most annoying thing IMO about the canon is the size and the cost.. 2 points i want to make out. 1st. Canon doesn't have 85 1.4 RF alternative to outrank the sigma, because it would outrun the sales of the 85 1.2 2nd Canon needs to understand that for being a solid 9 out of 10 is cool but other manufactures are almost 9 to 10 with half the price in their products, and by blocking the third party "collaboration" makes it even harder to catch sony's fleet with lenses and sigma's fleet as well. And no, that third part EF mount with an RF adaptor cancels out the whole mirrorless idea. Smaller bodies smaller lenses.. where are they?
You seem to be shoot a 1.2 and 1.4 wide open at the same shutter speed, does that make sense as a comparison, you have the difference in F stops, i would feel better if you were shooting both with the same exact conditions to get comparable results
what about continuous autofocus and stabilizing in video?
With any technology it is like that, that starting from low quality to high quality tools, price will not rise accordingly to quality offered, but exponentially. This means that as close to the perfection, as sharper the price gain it will be. There may be small differences between RF 85/1.2 and other brands, but at this point, those tiny differences will boost the cost of making such lens 2-3x compared to the other one.
I've only ever had one Sigma lens, when the AF failed no repair was possible as no spare parts were available. Since then I've only ever bought Canon and Zeiss lenses.
Thanks a lot for your video! I'm owner of Sigma Art 85/1.4 and Sigma Art 50/1.4. I'll wait a bit with Canon RF 85/1.2 after watching this video, due to it's a same quality for higher price but still no image stabiliser (as Tamron 85/1.8).
Canon's decision has also resulted in me not upgrading to an R-series camera from my SL1. the cost of their 85mm here in Canada is just under $4900 all-in with a 31% currency exchange rate. With the cost of the R6 being also close to $5000 with an accessory bag and cleaning kit we top out at just of $10,000 dollars! For a Camera and lens! So, no I don't think so. I am still considering moving to an SL3 which I can do for just under $1,000 and keep my three EF series lenses. I do some nature photography and casual street photography of people and custom cars. Since this is not an income producing situation but for fun and interest, I cannot justify the eye entering price of R-series.
I have a couple of nicer Canon EF lenses such as the 24-70 2.8 II and the 70-200 2.8 II and they’re fantastic. I use them with an adapter with an R6. But when it came time to buy a 35 1.4, I couldn’t justify the cost for the Canon 35 1.4 II so I thought I’d try a Tamron 35 1.4 SP. And WOW! That thing blew me away. I’ve never tried the Canon but I’d find it hard to believe that it’s not 95% of it for 50% of the cost. It nails focus just as well as any Canon that I’ve tried and the contrast is stunning. Canon, not opening up its RF mount, is probably one of the better decisions they’ve made, even if it made people jump ship.
Sigma Art series pushed me into Full Frame. That said, I did buy one GM too.
Muchas gracias
yes but third party lenses on sony body have very low fps but not limited on canon.
Great video. But I can see some differences especially at middle range (look at 10min or 10:20). The sigma bokeh is "vibrant" while the canon is creamy. However the sigma is a great lens for sure but still one stemp below and most people won't see the difference. One more thing has to be said. Autofocus... Sony bridles the sigma lenses. You cannot reach the maximum burst (frame per second) on mechanical shutter. And there are more clamping for video.
Front focusing problem might be an issue with Sony a7iv, and not sigma 85.

I have shot Sony, Canon, and Nikon. And the only thing that matter are the quality of lenses. I’m currently shooting Canon RF because there is no other system that has the killer combo of RF 28-70 f2, RF 50 1.2, and RF 85 1.2. The RF 15-35 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 is also mind-numbingly good. And the ergonomics of R5 is so much better than Sony. Sony is refreshing their lenses slowly and it will be a while before they can match Canon’s RF L line up.
that 0.2 difference in f stop really show itself when you have busy background, the Canon bokeh is so much more satisfying to look at, it looks dreamier. The Sigma 1.4 although does well when the background is clean and clear of obstructions but when theres a lot of grass and light hitting the grass on the background it started to look messy and fuzzy. Some of the shot the Sigma 1.4 look so fuzzy that its distracting. Also I strongly disagree with you about Canon stopping 3rd party lenses because they are afraid of it, it's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of. All of this is about Canon trying to cash in on their RF lenses and trying to get the pros to adopt all their high-end L series lenses first. Look at the line up of lenses that they've been releasing, majority are L lenses, most are long telephotos at high prices. They are clearly not aiming at the average consumers; some lenses like the Trinity Zoom and Primes enthusiasts can benefit from. But it's clear that they are catering to the high-end shooters first. With the upcoming Olympic around the corner, Canon is pumping out all the pro series lenses for that. The longer they can monopolize the RF mount the more money they are making with people who are willing to shell out for these lenses. People who want cheaper alternatives, Canon trying to buy time and keep them on board by selling adapters. Adapters is the easiest money making piece of accessory for Canon. It's literally a piece of extension that has no glass inside and cost 100-400$ depends on the version you got. Almost everyone who came from DSLR bought an adapter for their EF lenses. That is easy money making right there. For almost every mirrorless body sold is every adapter sold. Once they have all the loyal shooters committed then they open the floodgates for Sigma to pull in the rest of the consumers in, which is now, since we are all hearing that Sigma got the green light from Canon already.
Waiting for Sigma to release their versions of 85mm F1.2 (DS, as well as Non-DS) for Sony bodies and price them around $1800 and $1500, respectively. That will annihilate Canon pricing policy and force it to lower their lenses' prices...!
i would love the sigma to win, i really want to save some money but from the first pictures, all the way to the last picture, i could tell exactly which lens was the canon, mainly for very simple reasons that have nothing to do to with bokeh. Every single pic, you can clearly see that the dress on canon pictures is actually white, where as the sigma has blue tone in it. The moment i saw it, i could not even unsee it for the rest of the pictures. Same goes for her skintone, mainly in the later pictures you can see that she looks dead on sigma lens compared to canon. The whole comparison may even be pointless as the sony has a different color science (not as good as canon) so it may not even be the lenses fault...
For fun and a more fair comparison, redo this series with S5ii. We know how the Canon does on a Canon body; now let’s see how the Sigma does on a Lumix body. Oh, and the Lumix has better color than Canon or Sony!
I don't believe Canon is scared of 3rd party lenses. Canon is waiting to push out their entire RF line of lenses before opening it up for 3rd party. In the meantime Canon makes all the profits on lens sales for the RF mount. It's a marketing strategy.
I'm sure Canon hates you....but they should seriously consider opening the RF to third party
Samyang 85 1.4 vs sigma 85 1.4
Canon is blocking Sigma because it wants to rebuild its brand. It wants to brand itself as high as Apple, Tesla, etc And she is allowed I believe that in two years it will open up the option for third party lenses but fear? Does not exist. More of an economic and branding decision

It's definitely a smart decision from canon. They wanna protect their products just like photographers want to protect their images. Also, the current economy and inflation doesn't help canon. We are very fortunate that the dollar has increased in value and remained the same cost for the new camera like r6 ii, when the rest of the world has an increase in the camera. I'm actually grateful for canon's decision and their new discounts. It allowed me to replace all my 3rd party lenses to new rf lenses with their discount. I see it as a win win situation. Although i got by with my 3rd party lenses, I definitely appreciate the native lenses. Cheers.

Protect their products?? I'm not sure what that even means but it sounds quite lame. Sony has the most well rounded and complete system thanks to third party lenses and is very much the number one mirrorless camera system right now. Back in the DSLR heydays both Canon and Nikon didn't share their lens focus technology and third party lenses had to be reverse engineered. It worked back then but now this is no longer the case. If Canon don't allow other lens options, it won't protect their products but will drive people to other camera systems.

@@joetrent4753 Sony is the 2nd largest shareholder for Tamron. I'm sure sony will support Tamron and possibly others. Sony is great for the small size and weight. The reason I refuse to use sony for photo is because of the skin tone and color rendering. Although I shoot raw only, I transfer to my phone to share on the same day which then transfers to JPEG. I like to share unedit photos to friends and family. Once they really like something, I will edit them and some times print for them. Obviously, I don't share professional photos as jpeg, but this has saved me so much time. For video, I have no preference, although Canon has great ibis for handheld.

@@116Paul Each to their own of course when it comes to preferred camera system. I find Sony RAW file colour is quite flat, making them excellent as a base for editing but not necessarily great if you want sooc jpegs.

@@joetrent4753 yup. With editing Sony is fine. You could save your preset and save a lot of time. This is great workflow for professional work. For personal work, I mostly use unedited jpeg, straight from the camera. Canon snycs very well with smartphones and the color rendering is great out of the camera.

RF mount is Canon’s intellectual property and they can decide how they want to use it. If it is their business strategy to squeeze as much money as they can, then that it is how it’s gong to be. People can vote with their feet, like Alex defected to Sony. I never liked Sigma on my Sony e mount days. I’m too busy taking photos than worrying about Canon’s business strategy. I have zero complains about the Canon RF lens. I just buy them one at a time when I can afford to do so.
i think it's time to sell all those cameras and buy the dji pocket cam for a fraction of the sigma lens cost. Start shooting videos instead.😂
No one would buy sh*t from Canon if there are third party lenses for RF mount
Is it me, or does this guy sound a lot like Toneh?

The Sigma missed Focus ??? Well, welcome in Sigma World ! 😂 Twice left expensive...but never reliable ! ✌️

Maybe it's the Sony body that missed focus? The R6 AF and eye-detection is really good so they say

It’s a temporary block. The RF mount is complete from a mechanical standpoint but not electronically. When it is complete, and it’s looking like that will be late 2024, canon already has tammy and sigma ready to go to build lenses. Just have to be patient.

Where are you getting this from because Canon has publicly stated its RF mount is not open to third parties and it will sue them if they make RF lenses. They didn't say this is only for a limited time.

@@Soul_Visuals_Photography I thought about what you said, after typing my comment earlier, and it makes perfect sense. When Canon did one change (firmware update) it broke the Samyang 85mm 1.4. It would be silly to have third party lenses right now if they're going to get messed up as Canon makes changes. Thanks for the information, it's much appreciated.

@@cooloox I have the samyang 85 mm 1.4. After the firmware update to 1.4 you needed to update the samyang lens with the lens dock. I use this lens all the time. I love it so much I might even buy a second copy just to store in case anything happens to my current copy.

@@cooloox I mean it’s kind of obvious. Their statement didn’t say “they will never ever” we all know eventually they will have open the door. RF isn’t mature enough, meaning they haven’t made enough money “yet”
Well to begin with, I hate the shiny black plastic look of sigma lenses. Like the 50 1.2 and 28-70, the rf 85 1.2 is a flex lens 😂 for Canon owners. The red ring is magical 😂. When I switched from Sony to Canon RF, I love love love the flare. The camera is there to capture the light, I am happy to sacrifice sharpness for the dreamy warm sunlight that fills my frame. Also the two lenses have different barrel length and diameter so comparing the flare is kinda crazy. You can control the flare by moving the camera. Finally, all the shots are done backlit, which is fine but I would like to see more variety in future comparison, like low light, studio, off camera flash, which are bread and butter for portrait photography

Thanks for the feedback! I am a natural light photographer and all my sessions are done backlit. In a studio both will be equally as sharp, hard to introduce character when everything is controlled.
