Canon RF 70-200 f/2.8 • Unboxing and Early Images 4K

I unbox my new Canon RF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS and show you a few photos I made the first time I took it out for softball photography with the Canon EOS R6. This is the long lens of the Holy Trinity of f/2.8 Zoom lenses.

    I love the full disclosure Phil. As a longtime Nikon shooter myself, I understand what you mean with the muscle memory😄. About a year and a half ago I bought a couple of Sigma lenses for my Nikons and that help prepare me since they also zoom backwards. Thanks for the photos, nice shots👍. Thanks, Tim. I think you will really like it. I have the 24-70 to unbox and then I'm done for a while. I still want an ultra-wide but I think I'll wait for them to make a cheaper f/4 version. I don't usually use ultra-wide lenses in situations where I need f/2.8. Then I'll also want that new macro lens but that will have to wait a while as well. Thanks for watching, Tim!

    Geez Phil are you growing a money tree in your backyard 😂 You certainly been getting some gear of late. Boo on the crappy case you get with it, yet a good case for the 109-500mm? Guess Canon figured most people will just leave it in their camera bags. Great shots of the softball. I think that lens with the Canon 15-35mm would be a good Canon mirrorless landscape photography combo. Thanks for sharing the video 👍🙏

  • @PhilThach

    @PhilThach

    3 жыл бұрын

    No money tree though that would be nice. I sold so much gear recently. $5,810 worth in fact. I also sold my boat. All the Fuji gear is gone as is the Nikon 500 f/4 and 2 of my 3 teleconverters. Sold my drone too. I kept my Z50, Z6, D500, and D800 as well as all of my f mount trinity 2.8 zooms, the 200-500 and a few primes like the 105 macro, 50 1.8 and 85 1.8. So Nikon isn't going anywhere but most of my new gear was funded by selling gear. I have my eye on that 15-35 but I think I'm going to wait for a cheaper f/4 version. I don't use f/2.8 enough on my wide lens to spend the extra money for a 2.8. I do now have the 24-70 2.8 (see next video LOL). Thanks, Adrian!

    @@PhilThach Thank you for providing your insight on why you decided to buy Canon. I really do like my Nikon Z6 and Z50. I am full on for mirrorless and I won’t be buying another DSLR. I was just hoping that Nikon would get the AF better on their mirrorless cameras because I primarily shoot wildlife and birds. It looks like the Z9 won’t be coming for a while and even when it does I’m not sure I will want to pay the price for a Flagship camera if that is what it will be. So now I’m thinking of getting a different camera and lens for that purpose and it does seem that Canon has a pretty good selection of lenses.

    @@PhilThach Gosh Phil, I am not sure Sony is going anywhere. They are the king in mirrorless camera and everyone is trying to catch them. Canon is a close second, but not fully there with their AF and lens. I am Nikon user...unfortunately they are way behind Sony and Canon with AF and lens. Never the less, I think Canon is a good choice.

    I just got my RF70-200 2.8 , my first fixed aperture lens an noticed something strange in relatively dim conditions in the evening, the ISO would go up considerably while zooming in towards 200mm, aperture stays at 2.8. Would appreciate some technical explanation on what might lead to ISO increase when zooming at same lens opening. And if this is to be expected on all the lens designs, may that be internal or external zooming. Happy holidays!

  • @PhilThach

    There must be some brighter areas in your frame that are not in your frame when you zoom in which darkens the frame and causes your ISO to rise. Try testing the same thing but with an area where the light is exactly the same when you zoom out and in.

    Its a pity the Canon RF 70-200 f2.8 cant take a convertor so it would be useless for me with African large Wild Life where my Z 70-200 S (The finest 70-200 ever built and certainly the best Nikon S lens so far ) takes the 2 convertors which is what I need for African Wild Life. I have ordered the old Nikon Bag for my 70-200 S .. the only downfall of the Nikon one is the Cloth as a bag Lol but Image quality is what its about in my book as well as a non extending barrel >> ideal for African Dust >> Check out the Close Focusing on the Nikon S lens and buy one for your Z 6

  • @PhilThach

    @PhilThach

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'm sure the Z 70-200 S is amazing and I completely understand your motivation to have a lens with internal zoom. For me though, I'm more motivated by the reduced size in my camera bag. I did look up the Z 70-200 minimum focus distance and, impressively, it's 20cm closer than this Canon which is already really close. For me, I'd rather put on a 200-500 or 100-500 for large wildlife than a teleconverter. I rarely use a teleconverter on my F mount 70-200 f/2.8G VR ii. I'm sure you are correct and the new Z is much better than my old F mount 70-200 but I think I'm going to stick with it. It has a small mark on the front element which will really hurt its trade-in value and it still works great. Heather has used it some and really loves it as I knew she would.
