In our review of the Canon T5i, we look at the image quality, handling, build quality and video quality of the Canon T5i.
Today we’re going to be looking at the Canon T5i, arguably one of the most versatile crop-sensor DSLRs on the market. The Canon T5i is also known as the 700d in markets outside the United States. So lets take a closer look at the Canon T5i/700d.
On the front of the Canon T5i body, you have the flash release button, the lens lock release button, a depth of field preview button. On the center of the front face you have the mirror and the 18MP APS-C sensor that has been carried over from the Canon T4i. And these are both surrounded by the metal EF lens mount. To the left of that are the self-timer assist lamp and the remote control sensor. And slightly above this is the shutter button.
On the right hand side of the Canon T5i body is the SD card slot. On the top right hand corner you have the main adjustment dial and the iso button. Slightly below those are the on-off switch with dedicated positions for still picture and video mode. And the main mode dial. To the left of the that is the hot shoe and the stereo microphones. And right next to the mic, facing forward, is the pop-up flash. You also have the two metal strap mounts on the top face.
The rear face of the Canon T5i has the focus zoom buttons on the top right hand corner with the button for movie recording and live-view to the left. Below that is a slew of buttons you will find in almost every DSLR. And all the way at the bottom of the Canon 700D, you have the playback and delete buttons next to the access lamp. On the top of the rear face of the Canon T5i is the optical viewfinder with its tiny dioptric adjustment knob. And to the left of this are the menu and info buttons. And last but not least, you have the Canon T5i's most versatile feature: the 3 inch articulating touchscreen which tilts and flips. Great for recording yourself and taking shots from almost every possible angle.
The left edge of the Canon Rebel T5i (700d) body has the AV out port and and an HDMi out port. To the left of this is the wired remote port and the extremely handy mic jack. This is very essential if you plan to use an external mic for better quality audio.
On the bottom of the Canon T5i is the ¼-20 tripod mount and the battery compartment which fits Canon’s LP-e8 battery pack.
Unlike the Canon T4i and T3i, the Canon T5i (Canon EOS 700D) comes equipped with an 18-55 mm or 18-135mm STM or Stepper Motor kit lens. The Stepper motor lens is extremely quiet when focusing and was designed to work with the camera’s servo AF for video. The focus and zoom rings are also noticeably smoother on this lens, while the focus selector and image stabilizer buttons are still located in the same place. The Canon T5i will also allow you to mount any Canon EF mount lenses, if you decide to expand your lens collection.
As with almost every modern Canon DSLR, the grip on the Canon T5i is near perfect. The Canon T5i handles well and has rubberized surfaces to enhance your grip. The build quality is practically identical to the Canon T3i and T4i - Solid and well put together.
The quality of the screen is also excellent. The screen on the Canon 700d is bright and sharp enough to use outdoors and the menu items are all intuitively laid out. The menu system has been carried over from the T4i, but that’s not exactly a bad thing. The touchscreen on the T5i makes navigating the menu, changing settings and setting focus points a breeze. Definitely a worthwhile feature.
In terms of image output options, you can shoot pictures in different JPEG sizes, RAW or output both JPEG and RAW files simultaneously.
The autofocus when taking stills is surprisingly fast even in the live view mode and gets even faster when using the optical viewfinder. The STM lenses also seem to make focusing a much quieter process.

I've been trying to decide on if I want to settle and get the Canon t5 for now, because it's cheaper or if I just want to say screw it and go straight for this camera, which I'm going to eventually be updating to something like this when I can. I found the review very helpful and detailed, but I do still have 3 questions: 1: Is it possible to use the flipped out screen at the same time as the external mic? It seems like it would hide or block it. 2: In general, in between how much time does the battery camera works? 3: Can you adjust without other lenses the luminosity of what you're filming? (3:28 I'm not sure if it's the screen or what you shoot that changes) I ask that last question because I have a greenscreen and my actual camera tends to focus the luminosity on the greenscreen, making me pale as a ghost. Thank you to anyone who'll answer me!

    Hmmm...I still think the Lumix FZ-1000 is a far better way to go in this price range. The zoom lens is great, plus the onboard microphone is superb and it takes an external mic as well. It also shoots 4K and, because it doesn't have a mirror, shoots vibration free, so it is difficult to beat.

    I'm new to DSLRs and cameras in general, why is shooting with 24 fps more cinematic than 30 fps? I thought higher fps is always the best?

  • @Reviewlamp

    @Reviewlamp

    8 жыл бұрын

    +WayCoolJr. Explaining that would take quite some time. To put it briefly, the 24fps is what gives movies their cinematic tone. One way to see the difference is to watch TV(usually shot at 30 or 60fps) and then watch a movie. You'll clearly be able to see the difference in aesthetic. The 24fps is one the factors that make them different.
