Canon Rebel SL2/200D Hands-On Field Test

Ғылым және технология

Are you looking for a small camera, but prefer having an optical viewfinder? The Canon SL2 is an interesting alternative to a mirorless camera. Chris Niccolls took the SL2 for a day in Bowness Park to see how it stacks up.

It’s basically the size of a mirrorless camera with the ability to use Canon’s vast EF-S lens lineup. I picked up an SL2 a couple weeks ago (with the 24mm f/2.8 and 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6) and I’m absolutely in love with it. The fully articulating screen is excellent, the UI is simple and intuitive, fantastic autofocus performance during video, having a microphone jack is incredible, and the sensor itself is just a damn good one too. Canon did a lot of good with the SL2, that will make it appeal to a wide variety of photographers & videographers.

aidan flood On his behalf: Video in itself overall will be a big improvement for you in terms of DPAF, articulating LCD, 1080p 60p. But in terms of actual pixel-level, as in image image quality, there's not a huge improvement. Maybe a little less moire but not much else. Sorry if you want significantly better IQ you'll have to go for a newer 4K camera either from Canon or other companies. A perfect YT/Vlog camera with higher level IQ is the Panasonic GH4.

That's a good way to look at this camera. It's a mirrorless camera with the option to use an optical viewfinder. When I used my SL1 I was usually shooting slowed down stuff like vacation photos. The fact is this camera is great for doing just that. You don't need an EVF or OVF to do that but having one or the other and a nice big screen would be great. For me, the SL1 became the perfect travel camera for a Canon shooter. I'll pick one up later this year.

I had the SL1, sold it, but missed it, so bought another one, and the SL2 is so much better in everyway (save for the 9 point AF, which works OK, but is not going to win any awards). Those who lament that it is not a mirrorless don't get why it has the appeal it does: What it gives you, over any comparable mirrorless it outstanding battery life (compared to pure mirrorless), outstanding handling and ergonomics, the fact that everything just works, there are no stupid quirks that require firmware updates ad inifinitum, the flip-out screen, the touch screen, the image quality, the abundance of excellent EF-S and EF lenses, new and used and so on. There are cameras that have theoretically better image quality, better video, more features etc, but there are very few that are so well rounded, useable, and quite frankly likeable. It is also one of the cameras that you can stick in the hand of almost anyone and they will get great results. It's all of this I think that TCS also appreciate.

This review has good points. Something missing is the fact that sl2 doesn't have anymore the eye sensor to auto shut down the LCD (sl1 does have it) but it sports a new display button. Also, 5 fps are also bogged down because of the very small raw buffer.

As a retired professional with 45 years experience, the 200D us now my main camera. I'm a little surprised you refer to the video quality as being 'soft' - mine appears sharper than my previous Panasonic G80 & GH5, especially when I put my Sigma 24-105 ART on the front. I totally get your comment about it being a mirrorless that happens to have a mirror, and I shoot a LOT using the rear screen - both video AND stills.

Funny you come to that conclusion because that is exactly what I have thought too. All that really seems to be missing to make Canon take the reviews back by storm is a hybrid OVF/EVF (Canon has a patent on such a technology) and decent 4K integration in their existent cameras. That's it! Mirrorless aren't really much smaller if you take into account the lenses. But Canon has that amazing DPAF and their bigger bodies balance much better with the FF lenses. So we might be just another generation away from another shift in the camera market.

Nice review guys. The SL2 is the camera I suggest to beginners more than any other, with the only "drawback" being the 9 pt AF system. Compared to the T6 it jsut kills it, offering more features and a more compact size with higher resolution and a better sensor for not a lot more money. Possibly the best first DSLR, at least in the Canon line up. And for video, it is exactly the same as the T7i and 77D, and just short of the 80D (80D has the headphone jack and a higher bit rate). I like to say that it is simple enough to learn on with enough features to still keep it useful once the basics have been mastered. Canon should give me a kick back every time someone buys one on my recommendation! Side note - something a lot of people are unaware of (especially beginners), the T6/T7 do not feature dual pixel AF and do not have silent STM support. If looking to do video mostly they are not good choices. The SL2, as I have said, is the same for video as it's more expensive brethren, and is a far better choice than the base models.

A lot of people are commenting on the focusing. The biggest thing I learned shooting wildlife on my t5i is that it's a must to use a camera with focus micro adjustments. I consistently missed focus because the camera is internally flawed. I wanted to so badly make manual micro adjustments to fix the problem (easy fix) but the camera did not allow me to. Other than that the centre point cross type AF is decent

A well done review. Enjoyable even if not for the camera review. :) #Subscribed Personal I plan to buy a SLI 2 because it seems like a great choice for starters. Plus it's a camera that is more budget friendly while not over compensating. I haven't bought it yet but it was nice to hear some critiques about what could be better on the SLI 2.

I am loving the SL-2. It hits all the check boxes for me. The focus engine alone is worth the price of admission. But there is so much more. It is a small camera with a robust system behind it. MFT does not even compare. Canon gives you 70 lenses to chose from. The newest auto bounce speedlite works on it. 3rd party support is quite good. So yeah, I like this camera allot. Image quality and videos are fine. My first Canon since my old G2. That one still works too. I had allot of Nikons, but this Canon is making a believer out of me. Great camera.

I am glad you like both the SL1 and SL2. I regularly incorporate my SL1 in professional shooting jobs. You are young, so you may be forgiven for stating award winning nature and sports photography is not possible with only 5 FPS and 9 focus points. I would point out that Art Wolf published tons of books of the best wildlife photography using zero focusing points (he used manual focus) and the 3-4 FPS his motor drive could give him.

The 7D II is the biggest disappointment I had in a dslr.

They're also underestimating the power of "Center Point AF". You "Can" track birds in flight. It takes practice, but even the most basic Rebel AF system from five years ago is perfectly capable of keeping a Big White lens in-focus as long as you keep the subject on point (and the crop sensors generally give better detail on birds because of the higher pixel density).

The observations here are really on point. I am in the market for a new camera to embark on some vlogging. Been seriously looking at the Panasonic G85 as a compact take everywhere camera but on top of the crappy autofocus, the wide angle zooms on any brand other than Canon are simply so expensive. The Panasonic 7-14mm runs $800 and the latest Leica 8-18mm runs $1200. Granted these are very high quality lenses. So I am back to Canon and looking at the 80d, T7i and 77d. I just don't think my wife will be as likely to stuff one of those into her handbag going to a party or restaurant or any other venue we might be inclined to vlog. So I think this might fit the bill for portability - it's light enough for selfie vlogging on the go, especially with a wide angle zoom like the EFS 10-18mm. And the price point on the various lenses I might use like a 10-18mm, 50mm, 85mm and 24mm pancake are so much easier on the wallet. I am seriously thinking of getting this, investing in Canon glass and then waiting for Canon to come out with 4K on the next iteration of the 80d/T7i/M6.

I've bought it recently and expected to rant a bit about it... but I simply love it. Sure I could nitpick, but for the price? I upgraded from oldish 450D - or downgraded when we follow the lineups, but everything about this one is simply better than 450D (as expected). I love video and time-lapse, of course - here I'd like to be able to make setting changes during the video, but that's OK. I like the menu, as mentioned in the review. This really has superb controls. Sure, I came from 9-point AF to... 9-point AF, but it works reliably as always - and live view/video AF (dual-pixel) is great too. There is hardly anything I can complain about - especially when the price is taken into account.

I’m so interested in canon and their colors. I’m currently shooting with a6300 but when I’m not using it on a gimbal and external monitor I really hate it, the display is more or less useless imo. What do you think of the sl 2 as I first canon camera, shooting mostly street stuff using the display?

Been using Canon for years, then I started using the Olympus mirrorless for photos and videos, often with vintage glass. I now prefer to use mirrorless. Tried using a Canon using the live view, and REALLY miss the IBIS which Olympus has. Looking to get this camera to use with my (now sitting not being used) Canon 85mm f1.2L ii, for videos and stills, but just can't imagine using it without IBIS. Canon NEED to make camera with IBIS!

All the way from Africa🙌, a really big fan. It would be a blast to win this camera. The awesome landscapes in africa would be accentuated by the SL2. I hope to win

Love mine! Definitely upgrading at some point but paired with crazy range of the Canon EF-S lenses, it'll never not be in my camera bag (the size helps there). For people wanting a solid DSLR on a budget, you're getting the updated tech in the T7i and 77D, the same sensor as those + 80D, and Canon's entire EF-S and EF range of lenses. AF points are a bummer, but if you were about to buy a used Txi as an introductory camera, you now have something for the same price or less with updated features (save a couple fps). The 1080p60 is a nice feature as well! Absolutely not going to be using it for paid video gigs, but for family and other personal work, this is a great camera. They should be getting rid of lines, tbh though. With this and a whole mirrorrless lineup coming, the T7 looks pointless. Get rid of the 77D, definitively appropriate features on the SL-series, Txi series, and the x0D series, with the 7D line being a pro crop that can genuinely be used as a crop-favoring pro's main camera (and maybe get rid of the Rebel moniker to lessen placement confusion in the future). Less cameras with appropriate feature sets should be their goal so they can focus on each one and minimize outcry from consumers. That's just me, though. It takes the guessing game out of the equation and says "this is for this price point, that is for that," and all the teetering on the edge between one $100 differences is gone. This assumes, of course, that each camera gets the features they deserve in a way that makes sense. At that point, if people are going to switch to Sony, they were probably already going to do that. Here's to not messing up the mirrorrless line!

Hey. Thanks for the review i have a choice between SL2 and EOS M100. Both amazing cameras, almost same price same specs with small differences, can you recommend me which one to buy. Also is it possible for you to do a comparison video of those two?

Hi... As always great review.... Is it OK to use full frame lens in APSC body? I mean if I use Tamron 24-70 G2 in Canon 80D, will the photo quality be stunning?

Hi! How long can I record video in Full HD without stop and overheating with SL2 and T7i (American or Canadian version)? More file is not a problem. It is important to make a continue video on a seminar for 4-5 hours. My question come from Europe, because all European DSLR cameras are limited with 30-minute video recording. Thanks for your answer. Parajdi from Austria/Europe

I still prefer the ergonomics of an dslr. I bought an xt-20. Great camera with all bells and wistles but its hard to adjust setting bec of the buttons layouts.

That's more of a Fuji problem than a non-DSLR problem, the X-T2 buttons are ridiculous, the AF-L and AE-L buttons are tiny, I have no idea why the hell they made them that small and recessed. I had to start using 'front button focus' because of how terrible the AF-L button is... now I have an A7R II and the buttons are much better

You think the SL2 looks funny with the 100-400mm L? You should try attaching a speedlite on it. I have done with my SL1 and it looks cartoonish, but i´ve got great results with it. I agree with you, the SL1 is so likeable and affordable, that i bought a 40mm stm for it and really enjoy them. I´d like to buy an SL2 because of the sensor and the Wifi, but I also must say that the AF system in the SL1 needs and upgrade. Greetings and thanks from Colombia. Great channel.

Hi there I am selecting from canon sl2, lumix g7 and lumix gx85. My purpose is to film concerts, rehearsals. I also have zoom h5 recorder for audio part. May be I will try to get some cash from that activity. And as well would like picturing some landscapes, some street photo, timelapses and may be vlogging in perspective. Thats more like hobby. So I would like to have something good in video but potentially versatile. What can you advice? I have no big budget.
