Canon R7 Photo Walk at the Park with 100-400 & 100-500 Lenses!
Using our Canon EOS R7 cameras. Heather and I go for a walk around Renaissance Park in Chattanooga. We were looking for Tree Frogs to photograph but after we found no frogs, we photographed birds, flowers, and insects. It ended up being a nice morning of photography at the park. Heather used the Canon RF 100-500 and I tried out the RF 100-400 lens.

Six months after making this video, I planted an American Beautyberry in our yard like the one seen here at 7:11.
Yes Phil and Heather, I did enjoy the video. What a mixed bag, gotta love that moss!

Beautiful shots from you both! This is what I enjoy the most: when you just go out and shoot whatever you stumble upon! 😀

Great shots Phil and Heather and that was a pretty amazing photo walk in the park. Lots happening there. The funny thing is I was out trying to photograph frogs too recently and no luck. Must be a world wide shortage 😂 Thanks for sharing the video and images.

One day the both of you shoot your tree frogs. Maybe ask some local nature observer. Maybe between the Blackberries or Raspberries or so. Heather I really love your photographs, you can feel the love for nature an composition in it, it's not just the better camera equipment

It's a really great lens. I tried it yesterday on my R6 for college soccer. It worked well!
Vous êtes très inspirants 😊 merci encore

Superb. Have been using the R7 with the RF100-400 and found it takes very good insect and plant photos if combined with the Canon 270EXII flash with or without a diffuser. You can leave the flash fixed on the camera and turn it off and keep using the set up for birding and it keeps the system very light and portable, and I love the combination

Thank you! I haven't tried a flash and diffuser with the 100-400 yet but I might. Usually if I use a flash, I use the RF 100 f/2.8 L Macro lens.
Great shots guys! Sorry you didn't come across any frogs that day. I think I actually spot them when I stopped for something else and I'm standing there for a moment and then it'll just suddenly appear lol. I've had a lot better luck up at Dayton Park after watching one of your videos. There's so much variety up there and I'm seeing several species of birds and ducks each time I go. Thanks for the heads up!

Nice video Phil and Heather. Tree frogs like blackberry vines and other brush right on the edges of woods. They are a lot smaller than you think, about the size of your thumbnail and some species like peepers can be as small as your index fingernail. At first glance, they almost look like bird poo on the leaf. Unless they move they are really hard to spot. Once you see one, then you will start seeing them all the time. Kind of a matter of training your eye to pick them up.

Thank you for the tips!
Very amazing video as usual, I wish to see a video in which it compares between the Nikkor 200 500 lens and the Canon RF 100 500 lens. Are the two lenses equal in image quality, or is one better than the other? Also, I would like to see a new video of the Focus Stacking feature on the Canon R7. The previous one was amazing. Why haven't you tried the R7 raw burst Mode feature yet? I always hope you will do

I'm sure I'll try the raw burst at some point. I use the in camera stacking from time to time. Thank you!
I didnt realize how good of a lens the 100-500 is for macro! wow

The 100-500 is a really great lens and the 100-400 is amazing for the money.
Lovely walk and images. Thanks for sharing. Out of curiosity, which lens would you recommend for birding, the 100-400 or 100-500, if you had to balance image quality vs convenience?

The 100-500 is certainly the better of the two for birds even though it is slightly larger, it is still a reasonably small and easy to carry size.

@@PhilThach Thanks, that's helpful. I currently use a Tamron 100-400 F4.5-6.3 (with adaptor), and I couldn't decide between the RF 100-400 and RF 100-500. The latter is quite close to the Tamron in weight and length, so I was on the fence. I appreciated the side-by-side shots and advice, thanks.
Hi Phil. How do you find the R7 compared to the Z50 when it comes to autofocus. Thanks Richard
@PhilThach
Жыл бұрын
The R7 autofocus is vastly superior to the Z50. It’s not perfect but it is greatly improved over the Z50.
i have the 100-500, but the 100-400 has some great images at a fraction of the cost. If I get another mirrorless body my wife would love this lens as she struggles holding the 100-500 all day

It’s a really nice lens especially for the money!
Were you using the Nikon Zfc for the vlogging?
@PhilThach
Жыл бұрын
Hi Randall! No, as I mentioned at the 0:04 second mark, I used my DJI Pocket 2 Creator kit to vlog in this video. The Pocket 2 is my number one vlogging camera right now. I've gone back to using my Nikon Z6 at home in the studio but when I'm out and about, it's the DJI Pocket 2 pretty much 100% of the time right now.
How do you feel about the image quality of the 100-400 lens? Thinking about getting it
@PhilThach
Жыл бұрын
I think for $649 it is amazing and it's even better on sale for $499! It is not as sharp as the 100-500 but there is a reason that lens cost four and a half times as much. But, the 100-400 will help you get some great results and I actually prefer it over the 100-500 for mild macro work like we showed in this video.
Thanks for the review. I noticed that RF100-500 colors are more vibrant, making the images sharper. However, I would take RF100-400 for its a lot easier handling on the walk around, never mind the price difference. I would consider RF100-500 if photography is my profession. Otherwise shooting for internet postings doesn't justify the $2500 price difference and 2 lbs weight difference of RF100-500
@PhilThach

Thank you! Sometimes the more vibrant colors of Heather's images come from Heather and I having slightly different editing styles.
Can see the quality difference in those Lens side by side - the 500 clearly wins out in my book - the 400 shots just looked softer to me? not that they were bad.
@PhilThach
Жыл бұрын
I think the biggest difference was in the squirrel photo, I had to crop mine quite a bit to fill the frame and Heather was able to use that extra 100 mm to her advantage. On other photos, like the mockingbird on the branch near the pier, I thought the 100 to 400 did really well. Thanks for watching!
