Canon R7 Backyard Bird Photography with RF 100-500 Lens!

In today's video, I use the Canon EOS R7 and the Rf 100-500 f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM telephoto zoom lens to do some bird photography from my back porch blind/hide. I had a nice morning of photography and managed to get a few photos worthy of sharing. I'm especially happy with the Red Bellied Woodpecker shot that I used for the thumbnail and the Brawn Thrasher images.

    I always get excited when I see R7 and 100-500mm. That’s my setup. Great shot shots!! Especially the blue birds and that thrasher. I really need to get my back yard setup like yours. I’m trying to get hummingbirds to come by my yard. They’re my favorite. Love to get some close shots like yours. I’m usually trail walking hand held so close ups are rare for me.

    I was 68 on May 12. I use the 100-500 too on my Canon EOS R. I've spotted a Downy, red-bellied, cardinals (male and female), cowbirds (MandF), finches, sparrows (house sparrows are an invasive speices and I try to discourager them but not having any luck!), bluebirds, white-breasted nuthatch, and so far my favorite sighting and a first for here, a scarlet tanager! Great images of the birds, really enjoyed this video (decided to go ahead and sub!) And I still can't convince my wife to let me build a bird blind on our balcony!

    We are very fortunate that we don’t have house sparrows around our house. We do have invasive starlings. You could always get a temporary pop-up style blind, and take it down when you get done working in it. Thanks for watching!

    Love the bluebird pics! People give the R7 a hard time with its autofocus but I am perfectly happy if I have to throw several shots away because when it hits that 32 megapixel in good light makes for some extreme detail. My r6mk2 does well but being able to crop in with the r7 makes it my primary bird camera.

I love your shots but I have struggled alot with my R7 with 100-500. Never been confiddnt with mine. Never solved my soft focus issues. Thx Phil. Back to the R6 with 16 for stars this weekend. Take care

    There likely are squirrels in your area (?) so, they surely go after your feeders ; how do you keep them away ?

  • @PhilThach

    @PhilThach

    2 ай бұрын

    Usually, the only birdseed out there is the black oil seed that is mounted up high. There is a squirrel baffle on the pole that holds the seed. You can see it in this video. I only put the nut and berry seed out when I'm in the blind. They can get to the suet feeder but they don't bother it that much.

    @@PhilThach That's what I should do. Over the past years, I did put up a few feeders in the yard, which I left there all the time so bird can return feeding at any time but the squirrels always found the way to reach them, either by jumping from a tree, the roof, climbing were it first seemed impossible, bypassing every obstacle in their way... Some even teared everything in order to get the seeds... The even attack cucumber stems here, just chewing them off and leaving them on the ground, not actually eating anything...hairy little devils! 😉 .. So, I gave up before getting to install such baffle; It may worth giving a try... And not leaving the feeders out all the time would certainly help 🐿🐿🐿🐿

  • @ME2K23
    @ME2K232 ай бұрын

    Phil, since you didn't need the extra reach provided by the crop sensor for these shots, why not go with a full frame camera and/or maybe a shorter lens? Is it for the megapixel count or any other avantage the R7 would have in those conditions? ... I don't see anything wrong with that choice, I'm just curious to know 🤔 🐦🔭📷

    I use many varieties of cameras and lenses in the blind. I've used the R7 with my RF 70-200 f/2.8 and the R6 Mark II with the 100-500. For this shoot I just felt like using the R7 with the 100-500 even though I didn't need all of the 500mm. I do have a tree that is further away from the blind where I often bag shots. For that, the R7 and the 500mm end of the 100-500 works great. For this shoot, not many birds landed there.

    @@PhilThach Ok, I was thinking it could be related to the R7 FPS or other things. Yes that's great when you can use so many camera - lens combo, just as you feel. It's in turn really interesting for us to see how these combinations perform and to get your comments on these + the nice photos of course. 👍🙂👍

    Superb shots Phil 😊 Do you ever notice rolling shutter when you are shooting the R7?

  • @PhilThach

    @PhilThach

    2 ай бұрын

    Thank you! Yes, rolling shutter can be a problem with the R7 in electronic shutter mode which is my preferred mode for birds. It's not so bad for perched birds. For birds in flight, I switch the mechanical shutter.

  • @stephenbolger5925

    @stephenbolger5925

    @PhilThach I also use the mechanical shutter for flight shots Phil. I really hope that whenever the R7 mark ii comes out that rolling shutter and poor iso performance will be improved and the ergonomics of the R7 also. The R6 ii is much better in that respect.
