Thank you Duade for your Video. I ended up getting the R6 Mark 2 on Thurday after watching all your videos for the last year and a half. I have the Sigma 150-600 and have used in the back yard shooting Rabits and Chipmunk. I have not had the eye tracking on yet but the single point auto focus is quick and snappy. For me this camera is a major upgrade coming from the Canon 6D mark 1 and 80D. Lol I will let you know what I find when try some wild life Photagraphy other than the back yard. Thanks again yo do great work.

First of all, I thank you for sharing your knowledge in every video. Learned a lot from you and got a lot of inspiration from you. 2nd thing is I have tried with a ring EF to RF adapter which got electronics in it to use the ring functionality. I believe this did the trick for me with the pulsing issue. Recently got the R6 Mark ii and Sigma 150-600mm ef and tested with the Canon Ring adapter and non ring adapter which you have. Ring adapter worked very well and got 80% of pictures without any problems. So, I would recommend /suggest you to try this combo 1 last time 🙄.

I have been using the R6II with this lens for a week or so now. Overall I feel it does slightly better than the R7 but still not ideal. My pulsing was not as bad as you what you experienced. I was using all standard af setting and the factory firmware on the lens. When it does hit, the images are great like you mentioned. For me this combo is liveable for now until someone comes out with a decent 600m RF lens in the 1000$-2000$ range.

Morning Duade, thanks for another cracking video. The Kingfishers probably my favourite bird and the photo of the Kingfisher leaving the perch was great. I have a Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 which I married up to Canon Eos R and I found it worked flawlessly, although admittedly, there was was no eye AF requirement to worry about. I recently bit the bullet and treated myself to an R5 and spent a morning at the Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk in Albury, getting to know it. I like it a lot and I think it's a good match for my RF100-500mm lens. Anyway Duade, keep up the good work. All the best and Merry Christmas.

Thank you Duade for sharing! Very interesting ! We all have our little tricks to improve the use of the Sigma 150-600! For my 90D I admit that after 1 year it's day and night! I'm really happy with it! of course everything is not perfect but it's so sharp ! I sent it with my 90D to Sigma France to calibrate it directly with their internal process! What I really like about this lens is the image quality and the beauty of the Bokeh for an excellent quality/price ratio. I hope that Canon will finally allow other manufacturers in 2023 to offer RF mount solutions!

Very interesting! I had varied levels of success shooting little Egrets in Sichuan with a secondhand Sigma 120-400 on the R6 MKII, but it really did struggle with smaller birds, especially in the grass/amongst the shrubbery- I'm very much a beginner to birding though, so I wouldn't be surprised if a portion of my missed shots came down to user error.

Thx Duade for your video! Love you style. You are confirming my decision to turn my back on Canon and changing to a different system for mirrorless. I still got my 90d, but when testing the R7 with my EF glass I was very disappointed with the performance (speed and reliability). And when buying new, I wanted something more compact (and less expensive) than what Canon has to offer at the moment on the RF Mount. I guess the newer the camera or the software, the less it will match with the older lenses. And, I have to say it again… love your style🙂

Another great video! I'm wondering if the 150-600mm lens has had firmware updates applied? I had one I used with my 70D and it worked great. When I got the EOS-R, the same lense was great. When I got the R5, it started hunting for focus more. I updated the lens firmware and it got better.......not perfect, but much better. Might be something to ask your friend if it's been updated. Maybe make another video after the update if it hasn't. Just a thought.

Another great video, I agree with your thoughts, the AF being more advanced coupled with this 3rd party older lens, the scenario in terms of closer focusing appears to cause confusing with the focusing distance required. Could you turn on the focal length and focus distance from the viewfinder menu so we can see that too? I took my 600/11 for it’s 1st test run and it’s honestly a surprise, practically forget it’s there as the weight is next to non existent paired to the R7. For the price they go for, it’s easily something to add to the lens collection.

Thanks Duade for the amazing video, i am using R5 and learning to do bird or wildlife photography. I have RF 100-400 but is not long enough for the reach. The RF 100-500 is too expensive for me and i am looking for this sigma lens but realised the AF issue which required tweaking the settings (from your previous video) to improve the AF stability, not sure if I should get it or not. Anyway, I live in Sydney and Centennial Park is a great place to start I reckon, I am inspired by you and your amazing video. Hope I can learn more from you. Love your work and keep it up. If you could afford a 4000$ body, you better also invest in good glass. The RF 100-400 is close to a shame on a R5. If the 100-400 is really too short, why not getting a RF 800 F11 in addition or just go for the expensive 100-500, thats the best fit for the R5 as much it hurts financially? I enjoyed the RF 800 a lot on full frame, not so much anymore on APS-C (R7, too much reach with 1280mm...) But the RF 800 is also another "low quality/budget" lens, i dont see much sense in getting a high end body and then use the lower end lenses on it. And even im doing this mistake, R7 is a higher end APS-C camera and i use more or less glass worth between 50 and 900$ (more towards the lower end^^) In your situation i would rather hope for a R7 Mk2 or so as 2nd/wildlife/video body, i began wildlife also with full frame and wildlife was the reason to switch back/downgrade from entry level FF to higher end APS-C again. At first i kept the FF camera, then i realized a backup is nice but i dont really need it, as well i didnt had much practical use for the entry level FF camera anymore but much more for the more modern APS-C.

Congratulatons Duade !!! Even though I bought the Canon RF 100-500 I couldn't bear the thought of getting rid of my Sigma 150-600C. When I saw the title of your video, for a few minutes I was thinking maybe I could sell the 100-500 and get a R6ii instead, but that pulsing looks far worse than anything I get with my original R6. Maybe it's time to move the Sigma on 😞. The Canon R6 with the RF100-500, works well for me, and even survived a dunk in the river a few weeks ago after an encounter with a bull.

Hi Duade. Another great video, thank you very much. The sooner Canon open up the RF lens mount to the Sigma and Tamrons of this world the better. Sony and now Nikon have opened up their lens mounts and if Canon don't do the same before too long they are going to start losing customers. If they did open up the RF mount it may even be possible for Sigma etc to do some sort of firmware update to their EF mount lenses to overcome the autofocus problems. We can only hope. Some brilliant images in the video even with the frustrating autofocus. Thanks again. John

Duade. First off, I love the channel and look forward to all your videos. May I make a suggestion for future content? I’d like to see more training type video on settings and exposure in the field. Tips on getting the most from the gear that you can. Handling low light, where you compromise. That’s a big one for me. I love to shoot in the morning, but the RF 100-500 does struggle at 7.1. With the R5. What conditions you are looking for to create certain images. I don’t carry a tripod. Sometimes a monopod. Mostly walks in parks and woods. I’ve been shooting for 2 years. Weekend warrior for now due to work, and have been learning so much. I love that you highlight the gear, and what is possible. I know I need to grow my skills, and experience. So maybe more learning videos? Again thank you for all your hard work.

Duade, Congrats on another great video. It really helps to have someone demonstrate this "pulsing" issue on the Sigma 150-600. I have had the Sigma-600 mm lens now for over 2 years. It is a good lens, but some days it just doesn't seem to want to grab focus. I have had the issue with using it on a Canon 6D. A very subtle issue but it grows to aggravation when it does not want to play nice at that key shooting moment. I basically learned ....it seemed to help... to turn the camera off ... and then back on - almost like a reset. I just purchased the Canon R5 just over 2 weeks ago (thanks for all the great videos on that camera, by the way) I cannot say the autofocus is worse on the R5, .... but it is definitely still there. I have learned to shoot manually a lot more in the last year or so. But the eye detection on the Canon R5 is one of the reasons I purchased it. I will say the pictures are amazing on this camera with the Sigma 150-600 so far. Such fantastic detail on birds. But I might upgrade the lens sometime to the (RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L ) and just have the 150-600 as backup on the older Canon 6D. I did buy the Sigma used and wonder if my years and previous use have anything to do with the "autofocus" issue, but you have shown and others have attested to the issue. Thanks again.

Hello. I also have the sigma 150-600C and the 6D. I have exactly the same problem that you mention. My next camera (hopefully) will be the R6ii. In my case the sigma was new! I don't know if from one moment to another I started with that problem or it's just that I noticed it.

@@fedegregor Yeah I upgraded to EOS R5 - I wanted a better camera after 3 years with the 6D, but I use the EOS R5 with the Sigma 150-600 and I still have the issue. It is annoying and it happened to me this weekend. When it happens it tends to do it when I have used the camera/lens shooting for a while - over an hour at least - and then it just cannot lock-in and "pulses". My solution still is to turn the camera off and it seems to reset and come back and not "pulse" for quite a while. But it is annoying. I want to upgrade to the fantastic RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L. but it is not a cheap lens so need to save $$$. I would keep the 6D and Sigma 150-600 as a kind of backup, plus a kind of sentimental reason as it got me into bird photography. Maybe keep it in the car truck for when I see something out of the blue and want to take its picture. I will say since I bought my lens used - I just looked it up 843.00 on November 30, 2020, and it has served me well, I dropped it once and broke the lens hood and replaced that. The pulsing annoys me at times. But it takes some very good photos with Canon R5.

Many thanks Duade! Your videos are brilliant; definitely keep up the awesome work you do. I have to say I'm pretty disappointed that the Eye AF issues seem to be worse on the R6 Mark II when compared to the R6 Mark I. I hope they fix it with a firmware update in future. I think I'll be sticking with my 6D Mark II and 7D Mark II for now. The only real draw to mirrorless (for me) are these 'helpful' features like Eye AF with all of my lenses (Canon and third-party). Personally speaking it's in Canon's interests to support third-party lenses, otherwise if I have to replace my third-party lenses with Canon equivalents when moving to mirrorless, I'm jumping ship to another brand. If the local camera shop will let me try a Canon R6 Mark II with my Tamron 150-600mm G2 I'll chime back in!

In the meantime, I have found that the 90D works much better with the Sigma 150-600 than the R7, since the AF pumps less and the images are almost always sharp. please dont think the RF 800 F11 will be anywhere as practical as the Sigma 150-600. If the RF 800 would not be as light, sharp and nice stabilized i would have sold it already but sometimes its too much joy with a light super-tele for hiking etc. The only reason to go for a RF 100-500 or RF 800 instead of the sigma would be for me personally: - stabilization... totally garbage on the Sigma for video, but at least ok for photo. - weight... the sigma is just a heavy bomber compared to the RF lenses (but F6.3+ more range instead of F7.1 or even F11!) the biggest issue at the Sigma 150-600C when purchasing i see... i tested 4 different ones before i found a sharp one (especially in corner sharpness many 150-600C are weak, center was at most "ok" to good). But as i found a sharp version, it even outperformed at F6.3/600mm the RF 800 F11 in sharpness, not by much but it did which is impressive (and i prefer the Sigma a lot over the RF 800, sometimes its just too heavy and/or too bad stabilized if i want handheld video. I dont know how much you are relying on AF-C and eye detection, but i am also happy with AF-S in most cases and on a button i have the AF-C/AF-S switch so for moving targets the Sigma AF is getting reliable again (especially at objects coming towards you, not so much at objects flying away). Just if i use the RF 800, im relying more on AF-C. But eye detection is always on.

Definitely a disappointment considering when the lens hits focus it’s wonderful. I have just noticed that with the 17.0 R6 firmware update the AF seems to have improved when the subject is small or at a distance. Looks as though these quirks will have to be put up with as no other lens quite packs the value as this one. My wish would be a RF 200-600 with similar quality as the RF 100-400. Nice video as always Duade. Thought I'd share something I had considered when Canon denied 3rd party manufacturers the use of the RF mount/auto focus a few months ago. When the RF system was first announced back in 2018 (I purchased my EOS R), Canon made some announcements regarding the way the mount, contacts, data transfer speeds would effectively bring a better autofocus experience into this new Canon camera lineup. So my thought is that if older manufacturing methods from third parties could not make use of these technologies to create a similar experience hence pulsing auto focus and inability to lock and or hold onto subjects as well as being slower we Canon users and critics would look to Canon to resolve the issues of 3rd party equipment failures with their system. Thus it stands to reason that Canon would expect or try to get 3rd party manufacturers to invest in Canon methodologies for delivering the elevated experience or close the door on them. When these 3rd party lenses won't work as proficiently with Canon cameras as Canon lenses we tend to blame Canon for the failures not the 3rd party manufacturer. It should not be on Canon to find every single 3rd party model out there and re-engineer or re-jigger software to work with now inferior hardware made by others. To me it seems simple enough to take this approach and expect 3rd party manufacturers to redesign their hardware plus invest with Canon for their proprietary algorithms to make their lenses work. Don't think Canon should shoulder the blame when these issues arise. Sorry to preach, but it has been annoying seeing and hearing the commentary from youtubers bashing Canon and ready to throw Canon under the bus for protecting their business, their customers from what would now be inferior technologies (e.g. AF motors and in built software). Some Sigma lenses can take firmware upgrades so that might be part of a solution for some but remember the RF system now have more and faster contacts on board to manage the data being transferred between body and lens for the best AF experience when out in the field. Also, a shame that Canon won't address this themselves to stem the flow of vitriol being thrown at them for doing fine work. Hope you agree with my assessment and might take the time to share with your followers.

Thanks Will, yes, there is a lot of angst out there that is for sure. My personal feeling is I wish Canon would open RF to third party manufacturers but I can respect their decision not to at the moment. They are a business and have invested heavily in the RF mount themselves. I don't think it is on Canon to ensure third party lenses work, and its tough for Sigma as they made and sold the lens for EF which it works perfectly. They can release firmware but not sure they have access to the Canon RF mount to make their EF mount lenses work properly. Sigma and Tamron are also innovating all the time creating wonderful lenses and to miss out on that if you own RF is disappointing. I guess we will wait and see what lenses they do develop for Sony and Nikon etc going forward. Cheers, Duade

What would be nice is to try the Nikon Z9 with the Sigma 150-600. I bought the body, but haven't bought a lens yet and am not sure if the Sigma will work well or not.

Hi Duade, I have two of the Canon R3s and just received my canon R6 II. In regard to your AF issue, I have used my Sigma 60-600 mm lens on all 3 Canons using the EF/RF adapter and found a similar issue. In theory, I believe the Canon cameras sense a non-native lens is attached, hence AF communications between the camera and the lens are the issue, as Canon RF lenses are very stable and exhibit faster and truer AF. You might try turning the AF tracking to OFF and use the R6 II as an ordinary DSLR-to manually track using back focus. I do know that Canon seems to have AF issues not being able to hold to the original AF point, but snaps to another close point. Perhaps future camera firmware can fix or improve that issue.

Hi, Duade, Thanks for sharing this important experience. I'm still not a Mirrorless user, and sure this lens is working perfectly with my 5D IV. Important to know about it! I'm dreaming about the eye tracking system for next year. It's a pity to have some very expensive EF Canon lenses in the kit... They will be stopped in time.

Yes, absolutely, Canon EF lenses work every newer EF tele very good to as good as the RF version. For example the EF 100-400 II isnt much worse stabilized than the RF 100-500, and the EF version II you get rarely for even 900$, so about 1/3 of the RF version (and F5.6 at 400 instead 7.1 on 500, especially interesting for APS-C users) I had the EF 100-400 II, tested the RF 100-500 and still have the Sigma 150-600C, in fact when it comes to price/performance, the 100-400 II is unbeatable, but the Sigma is just a very good lens with a few quirks (focus breathing, stabilizer unusable for handheld video, weight)

Hey, I know about the pulsing but I also have it that in servo it micro focuses continuously. I’m shooting on the r and have the same with with the sigma 70-200 sport. It makes a clicking noise wich also happened on my r10 and I’ve heard others to have the same thing. It’s not the extreme pulsing mentioned here. The canon 24-105 f4 mark one has it too, original canon adapter. Any thoughts? Thanks and awesome video!

Dude, I enjoy your channel a lot, keep up the good work. I do own the Canon R6 Mark II and the Sigma 150 to 600. I've only been out with it a couple of times since I purchased the R6 Mark 2. One thing I have observed is it does a very good job on flying birds. I spent some time with it with seagulls flying and diving into the water catching fish and was quite pleased with it. It does seem to have a little more of a problem on stationary subjects. I'm wondering if it is not optimized well for the default auto settings of the sensitivity of tracking. I hope to spend a little more time with it and try making a few adjustments to see if that helps things.

@@Duade Just a bit more follow-up on the Canon R6 Mark ii. In very bright light on a high contrast stuffed mini eagle, I've tested it with EOS RF 24-105 f 4-7.1 IS STM with interesting results, at the 24 mm range it is excellent with the eye tracking, but at the 105 mm range it does suffer from slight pulsing, especially at closer ranges. I found this very surprising. I also tested EOS EF 70-300 f 4-5.6 IS USM with a Canon EF to RF converter. At closer ranges and and greater magnification it also suffer from pulsing. At wider angles and greater distances it was pretty good. While this certainly was not a scientific test, my conclusion is that the pulsing is from the firmware in the R6 Mark ii which hopefully be updated to fix this issue.

Great test again, it seems that third part EF isn't completely EF if you ask me. As i had the same thing with the Tamron. Without you testing it i would not have known that. Hope you are doing great and enjoying the R6II with your 500 F/4. grtz edit: Just like the Tamron tap in console Sigma has one and with a seriously qualified software engineer i'm convinced the software issues can be solved.

watched this and your review on Canon RF 100-400 IS as well....hmm so for R6, it seems you'd recommend RF 100-400 instead of Sigma 150-600?

Thank you for another very interesting video and thank you for the initial demo of the gimbal itself (saw Santa Amazon delivering mine yesterday, cant wait to try it). Coming back to the difficulties with the Sigma, would you have the capacity to test and advise about RF lenses by any chance ? Having a 40D and investing soon in an R5 or R6, I will have to replace a couple of my current lenses (the EFS' ones) and I was wondering if you had your favourites or if it would be preferable for the moment to still invest in EF + adaptor ? Thank you !

Sylvian, the RF100-500 is one of the best lenses I have used, very light, sharp and a great all around lens. It is a little short at 500mm on a FF but a lovely lens. The EF100-400 II works well with an adapter and takes a teleconverter well also. The only other RF L series are the big primes which cost a fortune but are very nice. Cheers, Duade

Best move I made was going full RF. Tried a Sigma lens but no way was it for me. I have most of the EOS R series and can't us anything other than my RF range. No looking back now.
