    AL least from my experience, the initial servo AF pt option doesn't work with the double back button focus method. It only works with 1 BBF or shutter focus in Face + Tracking or zone area focus modes. 1st option: Initial AF pt set for face and focus point option: you can select the initial focus point and the camera will start focusing on this person, animal or subject. 2nd option Af pt set for focus point: if you are using another focus mode and changes to face detection, the initial point will be your point selected in the previous focus mode. Both are very useful when you photograph two or more subjects because you can select manually the initial focus. 3rd option Auto: the camera selects automatically the focus point. Very useful video Charl, and sorry for my English.

    Thanks for this! I like to use the star button to cycle between autofocus modes, but since I've disabled all the other modes except for single-point and eye AF, the star button then acts as a toggle switch between the two. This way I can keep using the AF-on button for focusing which I prefer.

    Charl, thank you very much for this setup video. {:-) I have reviewed several such videos and have found this one to be the most comprehensive. As I shoot still subjects, as well as people and animals, I have set up the C1-3 custom options to have a pre-set configuration for the kind of shoot I expect to engage in. One thing I wish the R6 had that the R5 does is the ability to save the configuration settings to the card, as I use two R6's and it's a lot more (unnecessary) work to configure two of them. As I have also got the R5, I have set it up similarly.

    Hi Carl. I have now had my R5 which is much the same as the R6 for a few weeks. I have found that using the AF for spot and * for detect to be a little awkward at times as the 2 buttons are not right next to each other and there is a body ridge in between so not so easy to slide across. So I have also added DOF to eye detect and have found that if you spot on to the subject and then I use the DOF as well with the eye detect it locks on and does not appear to lose the subject which happens sometimes on eye detect only. I also have my MF button to toggle bewteen single and high+ shooting as many times the subject is static and no need to fill up the card with endless frames to sort out in post. Lastly I use the control ring for ISO. I normally like you use auto but have found that especially here in the UK where this summer we have had thick cloud nearly every day for months I find that 6400 ISO even using DXO still cannot give me the sharpness I want, so reducing to 3200 using the ring which is really fast helps even and I can adjust in LRC or photoshop post. Thanks for your other suggestions there is always something to learn about these cameras after coming from a 1DX.

    Hi an excellent review and most helpful recommendations, I am considering a purchase, but am undecided whether the more expensive R5 is a better option for wildlife photography, as you are aware cropping an image is usually needed, and with a 20 mg sensor one can finish up with a 5--6 mg image, ??what is your view please

    Thanks Charl for an amazing video.The only setting i am confused with is the exposure comp. do you assign that to another button as i cannot seem to adjust mine seems like its doing it automatically according to the light.There is moments that with top dial nearest the af-on button i can adjust the exposure.I have set my iso to auto.

  • @PangolinWildlife

    @PangolinWildlife

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching and your question. I have setup the set-button for exposure compensation which means that I need to keep it pressed while rotating the top wheel left to darken and right to brighten. With Auto ISO enabled that should work and the only time you will see the light meter "jumping" around by itself is if your lower or upper ISO limit has been reached and the camera is trying to tell you that you are over or underexposed because your settings aren't correct. Let's say you shoot in midday on a slow shutter speed like 1/200 sec and a wide open aperture of f/4, the lower ISO limit of ISO100 will be reached and the camera's light meter will show that you are currently overexposed. So you need to choose a faster shutter speed and perhaps close down the aperture in order to get the correct exposure. I hope this makes sense...let me know ;) -Charl

    I watched this several times to get all the settings correct. When I used the camera the first time after that I had trouble with the exposure compensation. I would focus on a subject and it would jump all over the place. I’m not exactly the most competent user of all things digital. But I couldn’t figure out how to stop it from doing that. I finally switched to aperture setting so it would stop. What I’m doing wrong?

  • @PangolinWildlife

    @PangolinWildlife

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Elize good to hear from you. Selling your 5D3 and change for a R6 will be a very good idea. You could hang on the 5D4 if you want but i wont invest now in EF mount gear. There will be coming a R3 and R1 in the next year. I will rather invest my money in that then in a 1DX now. Everything are slowly moving towards that direction. You are using your gear a lot so maybe now a R6 or R5 to get comfortable with the system, but if you want to spend the money on a 1DX I will wait for the flagship R1 or R3 that will come out soon. I believe they will be more or less in the same price class. .

    Hello, first of all I follow your channel for a long time. I live in Turkey in Istanbul. My name is İsmail. I am currently using a Canon 7D mark 2 body and a Sigma 150-600 Sport lens. I want to replace the body. It would be a better combination with my existing lenses whether I buy an R5 or R6? I know you use Sigma lenses too. Have you made such an experiment? With which lens I can get a better result with my current body? By the way, I don't shoot a lot of video, so I don't need the R5's video features. Thank you in advance...

    I have this problem with R6. I use C1 and C2 for birds perched and flying birds, but some times I have to change speed and exposure compensation. I am loosing bird photos because as I spend time chasing the bird, when I finnaly find me in the position to get the shot I want, I find the camera on sleep and all settings reset. This is very annoying. Any comments on this?

    When I go into AF method I DON'T see the first option, I believe it's called face tracking. What do I need to do to set it up on an R6? Thank you.

    Hi- great video - HOWEVER- u need to warn people that when switching to HEIF that u cant view the file on windows and u cant download onto a phone with converting the file to jpg on the camera which is annoying and time consuming.

    Hi Charl. I really appreciate your explanation. I have a bit of an issue with my Half-press AF after following your recommended settings. It's a bit too long to write here. Can I have your email address please? Thank you.

    Do a real wedding shoot in 4K +10 Bit then update your experience. In my experience, R5 & R6 are Overheated and stop recording.

    Hey Charl, Thanks for putting out another quality video, I have watched a couple videos now and find them very helpful. They are filled with useful information that a photographer wants and needs to get better photos and more keepers. I especially liked this video as it had the kinds of information that would help me to decide if I wanted purchase this camera, the R6. I plan on buying the R6 and battery grip in the near future. Thanks again.

    I just rented the R6 for a birding trip to try before buying. I like your setup as it’s close to how I have my DSLR setup. Having just received the camera this afternoon I am not familiar with the menu setup and I found it difficult to find the menu you are discussing. I’ve watched the video at least four times all the way through it, trying to pause where you show a menu. It didn’t help that the rental R6 was setup by the previous renter for studio work with a delayed shutter and other custom settings. After a couple of hours, I’ve got it setup close to what you did in the video. Can’t seem to get that dual focus setup with the back button focus and star button for eye-tracking. Need to watch the video a few more times. Thanks for the great content but would appreciate more help navigating the menu and sub-menus.
