Canon R6 Mark II vs Lumix S5 Mark II vs Sony A7IV Comparison - Best Hybrid Camera In 2023?

In this video I compare three of the best hybrid cameras on the market, the Canon R6 MKII, the Lumix S5 MKII and the Sony A7IV. I test the cameras in both photo and video, looking at image quality and usability.

It always seems that Sony is flawless and there are no downsides to it when we know that all of them have their flaws. It comes down to what you prefer and what flaws you can live with.

I'm all about Lumix. Other then the AF history, they try to put as much features into their cameras as they can without put a 'Cannon/Sony tax' on it. In the end, the tool you have and are comfortable is the best. More about where your lens are at. They all do the job.

@@TrollMeister_ My first camera was a Cannon. Went with the marketing hype at the time. After using it for a year I learnt that Cannon is like iphone, they don't make the best things, they market the best things. They love new inexperienced youtubers promoting their products because they know they will invest in the glass that will keep them with their bodies. I will never buy Canon ever again.

Outstanding review! As a former Z6ii owner I went A7iv for the customization and lens options and price-to-performance of Tammy and Sigma glass. At heart I'm a Canon guy that adores Nikon colors. The color science on the A7iv and it's 33mp sensor was a great middle ground and easy to work with in post. With the exceptional customization options and "My Menu" on the Sony, I never have to deep dive into the menu architecture, but it is less confusing than the Nikon to me personally. Not quite as intuitive as Canon, but vastly improved over the A7iii. Canon is losing a generation of Camera shooters by not allowing 3rd Party lens development (me included). With a family of 8, I just can't justify the $$$ for Canon RF glass. I could buy EF mount adapted (and the adaptors are excellent), but that seems retroactive. IF Canon opens their mount, I'll be selling the Sony. The lower end options of Canon's lineup (including used RPs) are very attractive options for my kids. Would LOVE to see a series on the best adapted EF glass for Canon RF mounts. If you can't take phenomenal images with all today's offerings, it's not the camera that's the problem ... that coming from someone who made a living off the 1st EOS body and a darkroom :D>.

For landscapes, especially the scene you shot, you could have put them into "high resolution mode". The Lumix also can suppress movement. On the GH6, you can shoot high res handheld. For video, dynamic range is especially important, but only the Lumix offers proper tools to getting the exposure correct- Lumix all the way!

I had the Sony a7III and wanted to upgrade to the a7IV when it was launched. At the camera shop, I handled the new a7IV, took a few shots and didn't feel excited about it. The shop owner recommended me to try out the Canon R5 and RF 24-70L. I was blown away by the images produced by the Canon combo, and bought them instead of the a7IV, I agree with James' observation that images straight out of the Sony camera, in particular, human skin tone are not so flattering and I often required more time to correct them. Thanks for the great review of these 3 fantastic cameras.

The idea that a particular brand has some "magical" color science which fixes everything is a complete myth. Every damn camera for decades can shoot raw and thus anything can be made to look like anything. Everyone should simply buy what they like or use what they've got because the camera you use means very little.

@@zenscape i was a former r5 owner but couldnt fall in love with the system. I felt the lenses were overpriced and inferior to every sony lens I tested. The final straw was when I tried a sony 70-200 f2.8 ii on the sony a7rv. the sony lens was lighter, internal zooming, and more accurate at focusing. The sony images were sharper and easier to edit. I just cant figure paying top dollar for canon lenses when sony is making objectively better stuff for much better prices. The tamron 35-150 is a GAME CHANGER. I use that lens exclusively for events now and it is amazing. Canon has nothing of the sort, and even if they did create a similar lens it would cost 3k. Anyway, im still trying to sell a few canon lenses and held onto my eos r because I enjoy using it as a travel camera, but professionally I dont think there is any reason to go with canon.

When you have a proper LCD/EVF you don't need that at all, I never use them on my C70 and my image is always spot on. All those things are derived from the times when LCDs and EVFs were crap and somehow many cameras still have them. Having the ability to just look at the LCD/EVF and set a proper exposure and white balance is the key for efficient workflow, and Sony people had never heard about that obviously :) :)

I use my cameras more for video, and went with Panasonic S5II. Very happy with it, looking forward to adding a good value 35mm prime to the kit lens. The build quality is very reassuring. Any thoughts on the Panasonic 35mm f/1.8 compared to the Sigma f/1.4, for video? Leaning toward the lighter / smaller / cheaper Panasonic f/1.8, as have been very happy with my Panasonic MFT 50mm f/1.8. I'm based in Valencia, Spain, so felt the overheating would be a real problem in Summer with Canon or Sony A7IV. And I did want for it photography too, so EVF-less FX-30 was not for me. Other considerations were price/value. Canon is pricey in Europe and Panasonic had good Summer offers, making it 800 euros cheaper! Kit lens deal was a bargain for starters, and lenses, like Panasonics own primes and the Sigmas are better value propositions. But also IBIS is decisive for me, full HDMI is essential, 6k leaves me room to grow, am more comfortable with Panasonic ergonomics, familiar menus, great video tools. Already was on GH5, which am keeping as secondary camera. Even if I had $1000 more, I wouldn't have chosen Canon. I'd have sold the GH5 and MFT lenses, and budgeted for a second S5II with kit lens. With video, that price difference multiples when you will tend to buy more than one camera. So, I expect Panasonic will sell many S5IIs with budget conscious videographers.

@@JamesReader One more thing: "aperture drive". In studio set it to "Focus Priority". Canon by default focuses wide open and closes to aperture you set just to take photo. Sony focuses stopped to aperture you set. This gives you full-time depth of field preview. Downside is that in studio, where it is dark until flash fires, AF system has very little light. Setting "aperture drive" to "Focus Priority" makes Sony work like Canon - it opens aperture to help with AF and stops down just to take photo. Helps *a lot* in studio.

The R6 only has mid-grade sealing, and while Sonys have gotten better, they still suffer from crap doors and the hot shoe problem. Panasonic had to compete with Olympus for over a decade, and so got really good at building bodies.

The landscape was a good opportunity to just test the high-resolution sensor shift from the Lumix S5 II and compare the resolution bump, how much difference there is. For some reason the S5 II has extra red/magenta not just compared to the Sony and Canon but also to previous iterations from Panasonic. The Sony always look more dead, for skin-tones the Canon looked better.

S5 looks the cleanest to me. I paused on the ISO frame grabs around 5:09 and I disagree on your assumption of NR for the S5II. I’ve seen mixed reviews all over the place on ISO. tests on all three of these cameras. Your examples show the hair detail on the model is as good if not better than all in these examples. Also, when shooting 6k, the noise is even finer. The S5II 6k open gate 3:2 is one clincher for myself- especially mated with the SIRUI 50mm 1.6x anamorphic for 2.4:1 CinemaScope aspect ratio. I’ve seen the raw footage from this combo and it’s outstanding.

The S5II "appears" noisier, but is preserving more detail, whereas the Canon looks cleaner, but is definitely employing noise reduction - reducing graininess at the expense of fine detail. (This said as an R6 owner)

What really stood out to me, was how dull the Lumix looked in the nature pictures. It did lose many vibrant colors which the Canon and Sony did capture. For video however, the Lumix colors are very good, I think they are the most filmic out-of-the-box. Also, I really liked the contrasty look of the Canon for a commercial look. They look straight from a fashion ad or something.

If you take a look at the 3 nature pictures, the sun is totally covered in the Lumix one, that's why there's no contrast at all, and colors are gone. Sun is gone, while in the Canon and Sony is still pretty there, is not a good comparison in that matter.

thanks for your review and those sample RAWs. I've been looking for a new Hybrid system and have been leaning toward the Sonys as I love all the lens options with that system. Then the S5ii came out and made the choice even more confusing. (as I'm a fan of the Sigma contemporary lenses, which both systems use) But after playing around with the Raw files in Lightroom, I can't not unsee how good the canon colours are, especially skin tones. Even when trying to match all three, the Sony image just looks like the model is ill, (very pale) Lumix does skin tones a little better, but seems to have more Cyan, but when trying to fix that, the face becomes too yellow. Canon just looks right, even without any correction. A shame, as it's the system that doesn't allow for the new Sigma glass.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! You're making me think about investing in an R6 MK2. Especially the way Canon renders the skin tones are convincing. I tested the S5 MK2 against my S5 MK1 for a few days. I noticed a slight oversharpening compared to the original S5. However, I found the color noise behavior more disturbing. The S5 MK2 shows significant green in the shadows, the MK1 shows a more natural black and white noise behavior. The real reason I returned the camera is a sound interference problem when connecting an external microphone to the jack audio port. There is a high frequency pulsating sound that doubles its frequency when you switch the frame rate from 25p to 50p. This annoying sound can only be heard very quietly, but it is disturbing in quiet passages during interviews, for example. I am waiting for the S5 MK2 X and hope that Panasonic will notice the issue in time and shield the audio signal path better.

I hear you about the noise colors, but even more shocking is the oversharpening and noise reduction on the standard profiles compared to the S5 and S1. Never seen such bad image quality on a Panasonic camera, the 6K is oversharpened and the 4K is full of details filtering (smoothing) in low light. The difference is huge when cropping. V-Log is the only profiles almost as good as before but we must deal with noise and the weird green tint in the shadows.

The A7IV eye AF issue is one of the reasons I passed on it and got the R6 II. Mitch Lally was the only other KZreadr to mention this so I'm glad you found it too. Issues like this seem to get buried by Sony sponsored KZreadrs and those that do quick reviews or only focus on video. There are mentions of this issue in some photo/Sony forums but most people get attacked and get called "noobs" if they bring this up. The same thing used to happen when people brought up overheating issues on the Sony mirrorless cams like the A7III and A7RIII/IV. Also, as great as the IBIS is on the S5 II, it also suffers from corner wobbles/jello at ultrawide angles. I believe it was Casey at Camera Conspiracies that showed this along with one other person. It's not quite as bas as the Canon, but enough to ruin shots for sure.

I definitely didn’t expect to encounter this kind of issue with the Sony. If this is a common issue I certainly wouldn’t be happy, I’m totally open to it being user error such as a wrong setting but I had no issues with the Canon/LUMIX. I do remember Mitch Lally mentioning some eye AF issues with accuracy. You’re right regarding the S5 II, unfortunately 24mm was as wide as I had access to so I couldn’t test how bad the wobble is at those super wide angles, but have seen from a few videos it seems to be an issue although already improved a little through firmware (somehow)
