Regarding the card slots - I just wished they'd have two of the same slots. I'd definitely prefer 2 CFExpress B slots, but if not, just do two SD slots so that when using the other slot as a backup, it's not waiting for the slower slot to catch up.

  • @OrdinaryFilmmaker

yeah, wish other manufacturers would also go dual CFExpress-A/SD combo as Sony does. With PCI-E gen 4 or even gen 5 there is very little reason to keep using CF-Express type B. Even with gen 3 its better than B type unless camera use 2 of them.

@@anupew3276 Why would anyone want to run slower 1x cards vs faster 2x cards is beyond me. On top of that, the type-A cards are more expensive. I can see type-B /uhs-ii combination slots will mostly become the de facto standard for mid-range, and type-c cards, for high-end pro bodies, going forward. As video-resolution increases, so will the requirements for high-speed data transfer, same goes for high-res high frame-rate stills. Just IMHO of course.

  • @anupew3276

@@bsc001 compatibility. Type-A and SD uses same port. Type-B is incompatible with SD, its either or. If you use SD for backup, you are effectively running SD card speed anyway and at that point dual SD is better choice than type-B SD combination. And as for speeds, Type-A gen 3 is currently on the limits of high speed camera today, so more than enought for 99+% people. Type-A gen 4 would be more than enought even for current fastest and for future fastest camera that might surpass the limits of type-A gen 4 (or current type-B, its the same speed), those few cameras can use double type-B (or again, PCI-e gen 5 is already a thing, so why not type-A gen 5).

They did the right thing. Most shooters already have a bunch of SD cards as they’re inexpensive and you don’t need anything else unless you shoot raw video or burst shooting like crazy. I’d rather have the option to use cheap media or expensive media than be forced to use expensive media.

I have read about numerous users complaining about IBIS jitter when shooting video. When you look at the videos, they are almost always recording distant subjects or landscapes. People seem to use IBIS as an electronic substitute for a physical gimbal. What subject is the IBIS supposed to look on when your subject(s) are miles away. I guess we need to suggest Canon add mountain recognition to the AF system.

Why consumers have to buy a cooling grip? This should came in the box with camera. Cooling issue was well known issue in the R5 & R6. Partially solved in R5c. One expects the R5 mark 2 architectur is designed to over come the overheating issue. But to have an issue in the design then force consumers to buy a cooling grip to overcome it is ridiculous. From what I understand, the body will have a standard heatpipe solution. For most use-cases, it will suffice, should be a good improvement on what the R5 had. The active (read fan) cooler sitting in the grip will most likely only be required when shooting high-res video at high fps in elevated ambient temperature environment. So it comes down to keeping the price at a decent level for most, and the extreme pros forking out a bit more. A good compromise at the end, imho.

16 Steps DR is what I was hoping from an R1 with 24MP. In the R5MKII, I would be happy from 15 steps and above 😀, so this sounds great 👍. But if R5 MKII is at 16 steps, then the R1 will be at least at 17Steps 😮. After the poor DR of the partial stacked Z6iii I was afraid that the Canon Stacked could also bring no DR improvement, so I will be happy if this information is true. Now I hope that 8K 60 will be working without overheating for at least 40 min, and this without the using of the new cooling solution with the ventilated grip(from the many patents you have posted by time). 8K 30 should be without overheating at all. Thank you Simon for the updates 👍.

Very interesting, Simon. Nikon said it was a major challenge getting the features of the Z9 into a Z8 body. With the R5ii likely to be smaller than the Z8, I’m sure Canon is having a similar challenge. So whilst the R5ii will be a bit bigger than the R5, it sounds like Canon didn’t want to make it as big as the Z8. Its solution being a cooling grip and external power for high end Codecs seems to be the compromise for offering a smaller body than Nikon’s Z8. Interesting.

Nice video, Si, thank you for the update. Even though I’m a Nikon shooter, extremely happy of these specs come to pass on this body, as invariably, it will drive the others to step up their game. Great time ahead for Canon shooters. I would think the shutter-speed will increase to 1/16000th, and also hoping that DR is not sacrificed much with going fully stacked. As an engineer firstly, I am quite excited to read more about the new sensor-design once it drops. It is amazing how much progress we have seen in this space the last decade. As I have stated per your earlier video, good innovation for Canon taking the heat outside the body. I can see a time coming where all serious videography bodies will use a similar approach. As the processors get more powerful, and fabs shrink the gates down to ever smaller nm scale, we will see a bigger need for this going forward, similar to how computer processors are making almost exclusive use of heat-pipe /vapor-phase chamber cooling. Leakage-currents become a real issue at these small gates, so I will not be surprised if more bodies go active cooling in the future. Exciting times :) Keep up the good work, and greetings from Hanoi this week.

Hi Simon, the faster readout speed of the stacked sensor will already greatly reduce the wobble, which is also sometimes visible on long glass when comparing stills shot with ES at 20fps. On the mark 1, battery performance was great is ES, but at the cost of rolling shutter and wobbles, which is why nowadays I mostly stick to EFCS. And then the battery is hardly usable beyond the halfway point. On the other hand, I believe unlike Nikon, Canon does keep on having MS & EFCS just in order to provide the dynamic range boost in those modes. The mark 1 also has 2 stops of DR difference between the modes. Regarding the 8k60 caveats, I'm expecting them to stick to their beautiful 30 min recording limit in that mode .. just to tease the ordinary filmmakers 😛 I had been hoping for dual CFxB .. but that seems not realistic for thermal reasons in a body without integrated grip .. so it would be an awesome alternative when they have a second CFxB inside the active cooling grip ..

About the new IBIS performance modes, I hope it includes a lockable IBIS. Then it would be perfect also when stabilized in a car, in this case no IBIS is better than having IBIS, a lockable Version would solve this small problem (but until now, I never needed this 😂). Maybe it will also be better on a tripod with a fluid head if it has lockable IBIS. We will know at the 17.07, up to then I guess we have to speculate, or to hope that one of your sources will deliver more details.

Simon, you’re always complaining about having only 1 body yet say you’re buying the R1 and R5mk2. Why not just get something like the R8 or R6 for your studio? No one will notice a difference. We just bought 4 R50’s to use extra angles for our wedding work and they produce stunning images, especially for their cost.

I own the R5. I like its performance. It's also a very popular camera. By buying the R5 II, I get an updated camera and can report back to the audience what it is like to use this camera. My buying decisions are different with the channel. I buy cameras that have the widest appeal to my audience. That being said, I think the R5 II fits in very well with the capabilities I need. But you aren't wrong, the R50 and R8 are excellent cameras, and the R8 more than sufficient for Studio A. I might even get the R50 for my son if he shows enough interest.

'16 stops' of DR means nothing by itself, you need to know the normalised pixel count, the test protocols, the limits (top and bottom) used and so on. On a basic DR test quite a few modern cameras can do 16 stops or even more. Also, for most photographers using normal workflows DR is not an issue. If you adapt your workflow accordingly you sometimes can take advantage. People confuse it with image noise, which is not what it is.

If Nikon can offer 8K60 on the Z8 and Z9 using the internal batteries, then Canon needs to do the same. No more of that external battery nonsense to record 8K60. One of the main reasons I sold my R5c, along with the piss poor battery life.

You guys need to get of this particular high-horse. This particular Sony division has been manufacturing sensors, based on respective IP’s /designs from others, for well before Sony acquired the Minolta-Konica camera division. The camera division from Sony is a very small part of their annual business volume, and their division manufacturing electronic components, a much larger part. Sometimes, for smaller and simple sensors, a base module is used, but then developed by others to become a specialised solution. Other times, it is completely designed by a particular camera manufacturer from the ground up, and only making use of Sony’s fab-house to manufacture the hardware. It’s the same when Apple, AMD and now Intel, is using TSMC to manufacture their processors.
