    I've seen this comment on other videos of yours, but I wanted to add mine as well. I REALLY love that you show the raw photo, then overlay your post-processed final photo. Not only does it give insights into tweaks to enhance the final photos, but also your vision of pulling the best parts of a photo out. It gives me lots of ideas on how to approach my photos. Enjoy your channel and getting to share in your adventures.

    Watching this made my day! Thank you so much Duade for trying the Z9! I got my start with Canon, but decided to take a chance on the Z9 and I love it! I have used it for work taking basketball shots at work and also for my personal wildlife photography hobby. I really like the 20FPS raw. I also like how easy it is to control Shutter speed, Aperture, and ISO. The raw files I get are the best I have ever seen in a camera and I don't have to do much with them, unless I want to. The colors are just amazing! Great shots also, a very inspiring video! Again, thanks for listening to your fans and also thanks for trying other brands like Nikon and Sony! Cheers!

    I saw a sign at Fingal Beach recently saying not to disturb the Beach Stone Curlews and said that there are so few of them in NSW. I was reminded that the first bird photo that I can recall taking was from my kayak with a little Nikon AW110, a water proof pocket camera. It must have been a catalyst for later taking up this wonderful past-time. The photo was of a BSC behind Sea World Resort on the Gold Coast. I have been back since I became a "serious" bird photographer but without success.

    Always an immediate watch when I see a new video from you Duade and very cool to see you trying out some Nikon kit. As an aside I had a very memorable trip in that area to Greenwell Point in 1980 when I was just a wee lad and have never forgotten it, a magnificent piece of our country. Great seeing you getting so much joy doing what you love and sharing it with us. I'm just making friends with the R7 paired with the RF100-400mm having moved from a Nikon D610 and Tamron 150mm-600mm G2 as the latter is just too heavy to handhold and walk with which Is how I like to shoot. Loving it so far and gained much info about the choice from you and Jan, so much appreciated again. Keep up the great work and look forward to some more Nikon sessions in future!

    Another great video, thank Duade. Sometimes we become oblivious to the thing around us that are common. The Beach Stone Curlew and red-capped plovers are common for me and I often walk right past them, much like the Cassowaries. It pays to rethink and not overlook the obvious sometimes. I have photographed, only once, a bar-tailed godwit here in FNQ but haven't yet seen another. The session on your afternoon outing was fantastic, all species I would like to see one day and you could just tell by your smile how stoked you were with that session.

    Love watching your videos in the field Duade as well as your RAW process before/after screenshots - I'm someone who crops meticulously for composition too. I shoot with a Z50 & Sigma 100-400 which is super light and great for travels. Obviously my AF cannot compete with the Z9 or indeed many of the latest cameras, but I think I'm only missing 20% of the fastest action shots, but in my favour is an ultra light travel kit with excellent IQ at 400mm and the great APS-C sensor on the Z50 with tons of shadow recovery. I really hope Nikon chuck out an R7 competitor this year with 30+MP for me to step up my game. Keep up the superb work, regards from Bristol UK.

    Brilliant video Duade. Glad you liked the set up you were using. I believe the AF on the Z9 is faster without the external monitor, not sure if you noticed. I have the 500mm PF combined with a D500 and love that combo. As you say, it’s so light for a 500mm lens and it can be carried around all day. I will eventually get the 1.4 TC and it works great on that lens. What I love about your videos is that you show the crop area and then the image gradually changes to your edit - brilliant. Keep up the great work you are doing.

    Z9 user here. The config you had with Wide-L and 3D-Tracking via Button is just how your mate set it up. You could also have AF on the shutter button and use AF-ON to switch from Wide-L to 3D or vice versa, or stay in 3D all the time. Just a matter of setting it up. Also, I noticed your Canony habit of shooting short bursts. With the Z9 (or any Nikon for that matter), the camera won't lock up if the buffer fills, just lower the frame rate. So if action happens, you can keep shooting. No need to have pauses between bursts if action is going down. Also, if you have a very fast card and use the HE* RAW format (which is as good as lossless visually), you can keep shooting at 20 fps indefinitely with no pauses. Hard for a Canon shooter to get used to that though, apparently ;)

  • @Duade

    @Duade

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the insight and you are 100% when it comes to my habit of short bursts, I think I will need to own a camera with unlimited buffer before I can change that old habit. I will try and get the Z9 for a longer term to try the different AF options. I appreciate your input. Cheers, Duade

    @@Duade I have my Z9 set up with Fn1 button as 3d tracking but sticky, ie I press it once to 3D track and press it again to stop 3D tracking and only use back button focusing. I shoot football (soccer) and certain situations this helps as they tend not to run in straight lines when you want them to, just like wildlife..... Nice to see a Canon user trying other brands and openly appreciating what each one brings to the table. My trouble now is that you are making it harder to not justify getting the 500 PF, cricket season is soon upon us here in the UK, my wallet thanks you.

    I wouldn't call it a "Canony habit" as there are very few cameras that do not hit a buffer from all manufacturers. Let not be a brand snob, ok?

  • @mm8276352

    @mm8276352

    @@weschilton Well, the complaint that the camera won't let you shoot anything until the entire buffer clears once it's hit the limit is one that I'm hearing specifically from my Canon shooting friends, and I think Duade mentioned that problem on his channel previously as well. I don't know if Sony has that problem too, but my Nikons never did this, between D70 and Z9, they just slow down when the buffer is full. So, unfortunately, it seems brand-specific to me, but I don't know the history of things in this regard with Canon. Did the 1D series cameras behave the same as the R5?

    @@Duade Don't change what works for you, I also shoot in a similar way to you on my Z9, I also don't use the 20fps available. I cannot imagine what the file count would be on the top line Sony and Canons which can go at 30 fps or more. Guess I am going to get told off, by maiksd 🙂, for not using the full capacity of my camera.......

    I always like watching videos where other brand photographers try out the Z9 to see what they think. Being a Nikon Z9 shooter it’s interesting to hear their thoughts. Sometimes their results don’t even come close to mine. Even though this wasn’t a review of the Z9 your, through the lens, video shows exactly what I see through my viewfinder. Duade, good to see you trying out different gear. Having shot with a number of Nikon DSLRs and now owning a Z50, what impresses me is their matrix metering, which always seems to peg the exposure better then other brands; and their raw files which seem to have a beautiful tone curve applied to them straight out of camera. The word that comes to mind is lush…The raw files have this lush, rich look to them and they respond so well to editing in LR. Having shot so much with Canon, when i pick up my Nikon i feel like i’m somehow cheating. ;-)

    What days you had there, Duade! Well worth the long drive, I'd say. I'm happy to learn it wasn't a 14 hour drive one way!!! Such nice photos of the Bristlebird, no wonder you were extatic. And the Beach Thick-knee photos was a real feast as well, as were the ALL the other photos of all the other lovely bird-moments. (The goodbye-chirps from the Bristlebird was cute as h**l🥰)

    Daude, I'm so glad I came across your site. I commend you on the remarkable images you captured. Masterful photography which was also educational for me! With the beaches close to me here in Florida USA, which gimbal setup were you using on the Skimmer Ground Pod II, as it appeared to support the weight of the Z9 and lens with no trouble. THANK YOU! I look forward to viewing more of your great photography.

I live in the mid-West of the USA, and I have only caught sparrows (house, song, and dark-headed), woodpeckers, doves, European starlings, ducks, geese, and an occasional barn owl. I thank you for sharing the views, birds, and the Nikon mini-equipment review.

    Having to press 2 buttons to get tracking is a self inflicted problem. Your mate needs to set up the function button Fn1 using "Recall shooting functions(Hold)" that way, you can press Fn1 once to get tracking and it will stay in that mode until you press it again whence it will revert to AF Area Large or whatever default focus you are using. If you insist on using BBF on a Z9 (a legacy issue from DSLR days), then you will still need to press and hold that button. BBF is redundant IMHO and I prefer to have my AF-On button set to switch to "Auto Area AF" which locks on to the bird if it takes off. I am able to switch between 4 focussing modes instantaneously on my Z9 by only ever pressing one button at a time. Glad you enjoyed the Z9 - wait till you try it with the 600 f/4 with integrated 1.4x 🤪

    The AF issue you mention is due the way you set up the camera. You have to use the AF + AF ON when assigning the AF mode to what ever button you wish. Your friend set it up with just AF not the + ON. When you use the correct seeing, you only need 1 button to use the mode assigned and have it continuously AF while holding the button

    I was thinking of the same thing. However I dun have a Z9. Used a D500 and D850, both are just using one button, super convenient as I can decide the AF area with AF on with just one Fn button. I really miss the Nikon method (using Sony now).

    Really enjoyed (as always) your presentations. I very much enjoy the way you show the raw files, metadata, and the fade to final image. Many of the birds (not all) you shot in this video have relatives on the Texas coast (and we might be on a first name basis .... well sort of). I shoot the Nikon Z9 and agree with all of your comments as fair and straight to the point. My friends shoot the Sony A1 and Canon R3 and R5. From the start, I have "wished" that Nikon could simplify the AF arrangement (i.e. one button) - but that said, it is something you get better at with time. Everyone I know loves the 500mm PF (weight and sharpness being the primary pluses) and have several friends shooting the new 600mm f/4 TC (too rich for my blood) and the 800mm PF. 800 is also super sharp, and "lighter" than the f-mount, but over 6 lbs. Hand hold-able, but within limits. You had a great day shooting. Thanks for sharing. Love your content no matter what gear you shoot with. No matter to me. Keep them coming.

    That afternoon session seemed like a lot of fun (less sand, too). But there’s something really gratifying about working for those shorebird shots. Really hoping Canon releases some kind of mid-tier prime DO lens over 400mm. That 500mm f/5.6 seems like a real sweet spot for portability and optics.
