Canon goes Medium Format - EOS R + Kipon Baveyes MF Focal Reducer Review

Ғылым және технология

The Kipon Baveyes Medium Format Focal Reducer lets me use my lovely Mamiya645 lenses on my Canon EOS-R. And it also reduces the crop factor from x1 to x0.7, giving me the full Medium Format Experience.

I just realized that the Leica SL is the same as the new L mount. Which means there already is a MF Speedbooster for the Panasonic S1 and the full frame Sigma we are all hoping for! :)

I would love to hear your thoughts on how the image quality of great (but old) Mamiya 645 and e.g. Hasselblad V mount lenses compares with the quality of new Canon RF glass on the EOS R? Perhaps you even have some images that can be used to compare them?

This is nice news for non-sony shooters trying to nail similar setups. Great video, I loved the previous one about adapters. You answered a question I have been having since that video, which medium firmat mount is the most adaptable one? Luckly enough a couple of weeks ago I nailed 2 dirt cheap Mamiya MF lenses on a combo. Anyway do you get some kind of flaring when closing the aperture to around f8 onward? I have some cheap mft reducers and I get that effect sometimes, depending on the Lens. I suspect that it is - besides the cheap optics- because the reducer lens surface facing the sensor is planar. Keep the work up!

Would it autofocus using the adaptor if the lens has autofocus motor(Zeiss Contax 645 80mm f2 for example) built-in? 2. How do you find the images 3-D pop compares in 645 film camera vis-a-vis full frame if adapted. Anyway, an excellent initiative from you beyond what(megapixel wars, speed etc) we see now a days.

I have a Sigma SD Quattro, and since the Pentax K-mount is functionally the same as the Sigma SA-mount, that really opens up the number of lens adaptations available. I really like the idea of using medium format glass on the SDQ - and almost always shoot in SFD mode on a tripod anyway, so the result is very much like medium format. There are a few snags, however. One is the crop factor/ratio with the APS-C Foveon sensor, so everything becomes telephoto - and my personality is more wide-angle. An unexpected problem is (apparently) internal flare within the adapter, with the much larger image circle of the medium-format lens. On the Foveon that shows itself as a chartreuse-green flare on the image, which is very difficult to deal with in post. It varies with the exposure, and is difficult to predict (so you would work around it), and sometimes it isn't present at all. It was worst on the Kipon tilt-shift adapter (they make one from Hasselblad to SA/PK) and I think there were just too many hard internal surfaces which were dark-anodized, but it clearly wasn't non-reflective enough. I bought a straight Hasselblad to PK adapter, and is much improved, though the flare sometimes is still present. The viewfinder/display screen on the SDQ is just good enough to not be terrible, but not good enough sometimes to see the flare if it's minimal. As a result I haven't done much more with the medium-format lenses. Also, compared to recent Sigma ART lenses, they seem softer and less contrast-y. I have Pentax 645, Pentax 6x7, Mamiya 645 and Hasselblad. I originally got the Kipon tilt-shift adapter to try tilt-shift on the SDQ, and Hasselblad was the only mount offered. So that was a bust. I did find a used Rokinon 24mm f3.5 tilt-shift lens in PK mount, and functionally it works much better than the Kipon, with larger knobs (though still not as large as the equivalent Canon TS 24mm). The Rokinon has been disappointing in sharpness, with very noticeable 'smearing' around the edges. And tilt-shift generally is challenging to get really, completely sharp - especially on the SDQ 'just good enough' viewfinder, especially tilt. But even shift suffers from the weird unsharpness. Fun to play with, but I haven't gotten a shot I really like with it. From there, I've moved toward those ART lenses, which are also built much better than even the previous generation EX lenses. The sharpness and contrast is startling sometimes - and very satisfying. The large apertures allow full-frame-like bokeh and background blur, and the sharpness is amazing wide open. My landscape technique now is to use ART lenses and focus-stack each SFD image, though that can introduce areas of unsharpness in the final image, too, so it's not perfect. Large files sizes, though - each SFD (X3i) image is about 350mb, and it's a slow workflow, but that's my photographic fun, so not a problem. For me this is a hobby, and not a job, so I can try things and be inefficient. My workflow preference has always been a bit 'medium format', anyway. Thanks for the great videos, Mattias - much appreciated! -Tom

Update from today - after trying the Pentax 645 200mm f4 with SA/KP adapter, lots of green flare with the Sigma DP Quattro - but NO flare under the very same circumstances, same location, using a friend's Pentax K70. More research needed! But it is pointing to the Foveon sensor as the culprit. Can't wait to see your video on the full-frame Sigma L when it comes out! :) -Tom

Does the adapter/ focal reducer respect the total field of view of the medium format lens when projected on the FF 35mm sensor? That is not cropping whatsoever ? Do you think a medium format lens made for 6x9 would be also reduced such that is original field of view would be entirely recovered on FF ?

@@gearreallydoesntmatter I see. I'd hoped that, say, a 65 mm medium format would keep the same field of view comparable to a 28mm for FF, and thus the focal reducer would have the capacity to project just that same field of view on a FF sensor. Which means a reducer with 0,43 factor, probably much more optically complex. Thank you !

If its for medium format than Kipon is the only one there is, as far as I know. Metabones are very sharp wide open but Viltrox is sharper on all other apertures. Metabones also makes special versions for the BMPCC/BMCC that the others dont make. So as always, which is better depends :)
