Canon FD 70-210mm f/4 Zoom Lens Overview

Ғылым және технология

This is a quick overview of the Canon FD 70-210mm f/4 manual focus zoom lens. I'll talk about features and compare image quality to a couple of more modern lenses of approximately the same focal length - the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS and the Canon EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-f/6.3 IS STM.
It's an old lens, but you can pick one up cheaply second-hand and the image quality is quite good. In addition to a 70-210mm focal length range, you also get a macro feature. There are some more sample images on my web page.

    My grandfather was going through some old boxes he’s had packed away and came across an old lens (prospec AF Zoom 1:4-5.6 70-210mm). He was hoping it would work for my camera lol. Thank you for the video I’ve found it quite interesting and helpful. Hopefully I can help him find the camera he used it with. ❤️

    I've never heard of a ProSpec lens! It's the same focal length as mine, but the Canon retains a max aperture of f/4 through the zoom range. If you can't find the original camera you may be able to get an adapter if you know what kind of mount is on the lens. Good luck and thanks for your comment!

    Started on Canon AE-1, This was an awsome lens, especially for sports. Not "state of the art", but never found anything this side of the cost of a decent used car taht I was happier with. Also (old guy) actually miss the split prism and aperture on the lens ring - ISO was set by the film, shutter speed by the enviromnent; on hand can play with focus and aperture to get the needle in the middle and "click". May sound cumbersome, but was actually icredibly easy and intuitive.

    I'm an old guy too! I remember playing around with some fully manual cameras in my youth that had light meter needles, but I really started my photography career with the A1 so I don't go back quite that far! As you say, not state of the art, but in the film days before pixel peeping when you only saw your images on small prints this lens was good enough. I estimate that probably 95% of the photos I took were with this lens or the FD 28mm f/2.8. To users of modern cameras it does seem cumbersome now but again, as you say, it all felt quite intuitive at the time. One of the problems using these old lenses on digital mirrorless cameras is focusing. The old split prisms were an excellent tool for focusing and with some practice you could actually focus manually fairly quickly. Some nice reminiscences, thanks for your comment!

    Myself I prefer the Push-Pull Zoom, when combined with Manual Focus, both can be achieved without moving One's Hand to a different location on the Lens. My first SLR was the Canon A1,, used it for just over 4 years. While I did look at the 70-210 FD Lens, I eventually chose the first version of the Vivitar Series 1 70-210. My friends had one and I really liked it so I bought one too. 40 yrs later, I wish I had bought Both

    I never had any problems with the push-pull zoom, but lots of people complain about the original EF 100-400mm because of its push-pull zoom! I used my A1 for about 18 years and before I got the Canon 70-210 I also used the equivalent Vivitar zoom. It was a good lens!

    Your camera will accept EF or EF-S lenses without an adaptor. You can use FD lenses like this one with an adaptor, but your camera is a DSLR and because of flange distances you won't be able to focus at infinity unless your adapter has an optical element. If you use a cheap adaptor with a low quality optical element it will degrade the image quality. One of the best lenses I have ever owned is the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro, if macro is important to you. There are also cheaper macro lenses if your budget won't stretch. This 70-210 FD telephoto lens has a macro feature, which is simply the ability to reduce the minimum focusing distance. I can't think of any EF lens that has the same feature. If you buy a specialist macro lens you will also be able to use it as a telephoto lens. One other alternative is to buy a telephoto lens and some extension tubes. The extension tubes will reduce the minimum focusing distance and allow you to use the lens for macro. The EF 85mm f/1.8, for example, becomes a very good macro lens when used with extension tubes. If you want to find out more there is a video about using extension tubes on my channel.

    คุณอาศัยอยู่ที่ไหนครับผมอาศัยอยู่จังหวัดสงขลาเขียนภาษาอังกฤษดีกว่า I would only recommend old FD lenses if you are trying to save money or if you want the unique kind of images that old lenses produce. The 6D is full frame with no crop factor and the EF 85mm f/1.8 would be a great portrait lens. The focal length is ideal for portraits and it is a very sharp lens that gives great results. If you can afford it, the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS is a better lens and it also has image stabilisation, which the f/1.8 doesn't. However, the f/1.4L is almost 50,000 Baht and the f/1.8 is only around 10,000 Baht.

  • @PhilUKNet

    @PhilUKNet

    Жыл бұрын

    The non-L version of the FD 100-300mm is not professional quality and lenses of this vintage weren't always that sharp. Back in my film days I used some quite low quality lenses and I never noticed any problems with 4x6 prints. These days, with high resolution cameras and displays, we can pixel peep and see all sorts of problems. So firstly, don't set your expectations too high with old lenses. Secondly, this lens is quite long. Your camera's APS-C sensor has a crop factor of 1.6x, therefore this lens is actually 160-480mm, which is quite long. You'll need to use quite fast shutter speeds - at least 1/500s at the long end - and I would also suggest using some support. A tripod, monopod or resting the camera on something solid.

    Your camera will accept EF and EF-S mount lenses. If you want to use an FD lens you will need an adapter. Further, your camera is a DSLR so the adaptor will need an optical element otherwise you won't be able to focus at infinity. I use this lens on an EOS M mirrorless body and I don't have this problem, but because of flange distances DSLRs are different to MILCs.

    I just replied at length and KZread didn't post my reply! The reply had some external product links so YT probably thought it was spam and deleted it. Thank you KZread. You will need an FD to EOS adapter. Your camera is a DSLR, not mirrorless. Because of this, if you use a simple mechanical adapter without a lens element you won't be able to focus to infinity. I don't have this problem because my camera is mirrorless. You will need to use an adapter with an optical element so that you can focus to infinity. However, with the very cheap adapters the lens elements will be low quality and your images will be degraded. I found one on the Fotodiox web site that is priced reasonably and looks to be decent quality. Unfortunately, it was out of stock. My suggestion would be to search around on-line to find an adapter that is a good compromise between price and quality.

    Lockdown has seen the price of vintage lenses go up dramatically but the FD 70-210mm f4 is still to be had for cheap - I got mine for £20 a few weeks ago. It's a useful range. Great for capturing obliging birds and squirrels in the park. I find the chromatic aberration between f4 and f8 disappointing. At f11 it seems ok. I haven't done any post processing in photoshop yet, if that helps then great. But for £20 or even £40 the complaints are moot. As time goes on I will learn how to get the best out of it. Justine, while vacationing in the US many years ago I was in a Colorado canyon and a train suddenly appeared. I rushed to pull this lens out of my bag to get a shot and dropped it. After that I had the same problem. The outer barrel would not rotate to focus or push/pull to zoom freely. It required a lot of effort, which obviously wasn't right. Fortunate, this was in the early 90's when parts were still easily available and you could still find people to work on manual focus lenses. It was given a new outer barrel and maybe some other bits. From what you describe, I suspect your lens may have been dropped or knocked. Unfortunately, it's not going to be that easy to get repaired in 2020. If it hasn't been dropped or knocked, something may have gotten into the mechanism causing it to jam. In that case it may be possible to dismantle it and remove the offending object, but I'd advise getting someone to do it who has experience.

    I was always very fond of it in my film days, but when you only ever look at 6x4 prints you can't really see any imperfections. When I compared it to the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS recently there was a lot of chromatic aberration at 210mm. It's still quite a good lens, but when taken to its limits it starts to show its age. And even in its day it was only ever a budget lens.

    First of all thanks for your presentation of the old school FD lens. I own one as well and luckily I discovered this year that i.e. A Sony alpha 6000 works pretty well with it. Opposite to my new 6D Mark II. I was shortly before selling my old FD lenses and of course now I'm very happy I did not! As landscape photographer it doesn't matter at all to have everything manual. In any case I'm still astonished about the high picture quality of these vintage glasses. And - to say it frankly - the difference between the old FD and the new EF for my opinion not too big.

  • @PhilUKNet

    @PhilUKNet

    I only have Canon bodies, but if you have the right adapter I believe these old lenses will work on any mirrorless body. I'm not sure if there are adapters available yet to put FD lenses on the new Canon EOS R mount. I agree with you entirely. The two things I miss with these old FD lenses are autofocus and image stabilisation. However, if you have the camera on a tripod shooting landscapes and other stationary subjects these things aren't important. There may be a little more vignetting, and modern lens coatings are better, but the image quality of some FD lenses is still on a par with many modern lenses. This one's not bad, but my FD 300mm f/4 (non L) has superb image quality. Thanks for your comment.

  • @PhilUKNet

    @PhilUKNet

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Chyler, of course I noticed you! I think a longer lens would be better for moon shots. Film is full frame, so you don't get any crop factor effect. The moon shots I have taken were with a 400mm lens on a crop body, therefore an effective focal length of 640mm. That's more than three times the focal length of this lens. Back in my film photography days (a long time ago) I used to be the only one with a camera at weddings - apart from the official photographer. I used this lens a lot at weddings just walking around taking candid shots of people when they weren't looking. I thought these shots were a lot more interesting than organised photos. People often say that the best focal length for portraits is 85-135mm, therefore this lens is perfect for portraits. Technically, it's not as accurate and sharp as modern lenses, but there is a unique image quality with these old lenses that a lot of people like. I've received several comments telling me how little money people paid for these lenses. Some old lenses are quite expensive now, but the Canon FD 70-210 f/4 can still be bought cheaply. So, yes for weddings and portraits, but maybe a bit short for the moon.

Bokeh is easier to get with longer lenses compared to shorter lenses and if you keep the lens at its maximum f/4 aperture you can get a decent bokeh effect.

    You can use FD lenses on EOS bodies if you get an appropriate adapter - there are lots available on-line. Bear in mind that if you want to be able to focus at infinity the adapter needs some built-in optics. Adapters used to mount FD lenses on mirrorless cameras don't require optics, but they do on DSLR's. Of course, exposure and focusing will all be completely manual. Once you get the hang of using manual focus lenses it's not too difficult, but it's slow and not suitable for fast moving objects.
