Hello, I am just getting started in Astrophotography and I am very interested in the Canon R and Ra. I am trying to find out as mush as I can before buying. I need my camera to do it all and want to make sure the Ra can do regular photography as well as the EOS R. I saw Canon has a warning on their website that it would not do well on regular photography. How did your photo's come out ? Did you notice issues during daylight shooting because it is made for AP use ? Thank you very much.

What are you doing about the red halo around stars even out of the nebulas? Why we could not choose exposure beyong 30s?

I have both the EOS Ra and the 60Da. They are both great Astro cameras and still work fine for regular photography. I also have the the Fujifilm X-T30. It is also a great Astro camera. I have the Redcat 51. They all work great.

I just found your channel and really appreciate your videos and your terrific presentation style! I also just got the Canon Ra as well, and it turns out that it does have the ability to do >30 second exposures without an intervalometer, though the option is somewhat hidden. The last shooting menu (#6) has a bulb timer, which you can enable and then set to any length (hours:minutes:second). Once you do that, you can click the shutter, and the camera will expose for that length. But you still don't get the other features of an intervalometer.

just to add; I would recommend getting the William Optics T-Ring if fitting to spacecat/red cat as I found using other non WO versions would not connect great on my DSLR.

I just bought the EOS R, hasn't arrived yet. I was also thinking of getting the Ra but saw an issue brought up on the Nebula Photo channel about a red glow around bright stars that is offset towards the corners of the image, I think it's a red/pink coma, that disappeared on a 5D MkIII with all the same settings. I have the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 coming and the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 coming. I'm thinking of using a Bahtinov mask with lobed lens hood of the 70-200 to do decent focusing. I'm going to use a Star Adventurer Pro on a tripod mount. The EOS R or Ra will likely take amazing photos given that I live at 68.3N. I can only shoot late Sept - early March at this latitude. Your photos are spectacular, you along with Alyn Wallace, Nebula Photos and Astrobackyard have provided amazing insights into Astrophotography.

Sounds like chromatic aberration to me. Since the Ra is more sensitive to h-alpha it would make sense that it's more susceptible to CA, especially in the reds. That sounds like a great plan! Thank you so much for the kind words about my images. :)

its an issue with internal reflections that causes halos on bright stars, its basically a mistake that canon did when making the Ra, I have the same issue on another modified camera, where as another modded camera I own doesn't have the issue. it can be fixed in post process or by purchasing an LR3 filter from Astronomik that will block out the certain light that causes the halos around stars.

Hi! Love your channel (both of them)! I'm just getting into astrophotography and I have one really dumb question - how do you use the filter, for example the Optolong L-Enhance one you mention in this video? Where does it go, what does it attach to? Is some special finlter holder or something needed to be able to use it? I'm still coming up to speed with these setups! I'm interested in the EOS Ra for sure, but I'm quite heavily invested in Sony, so I'm not sure I'm ready to change camera ecosystems. I just got a Star Adventurer this week and figuring out how to use it, and I'm thinking that before I go out and consider telescopes or a new camera like the Ra, maybe I'm better off investing in lenses - or even just filters to make best use of the (not the best) lenses I have. I live in a heavily light polluted area - Bortle class 8 according to the ClearOuside app - so maybe filters are the best thing for me to start with? Anyway, thanks for your great content!!

That’s not a dumb question at all! Given your situation I think a light pollution filter would be a great choice. Most astro filters are 2” in size which does make things interesting when going to mount them. If you are trying to mount one to a traditional camera lens, you will need some sort of custom filter holder. I’m not sure of an exact model, but they sandwich between the camera and lens and allow you to use a filter. If you are using a telescope, most scopes simply have a 2” threaded back to them and you screw the filter onto the back of the scope where it mounts to the camera. Your Sony should be perfect too!

@@forestchaput Thanks so much for replying! I've been doing some google searching and so far I can't find whatever equipment would hold a 2" filter between a sony camera and the E-Mount lens. Maybe I'll find it with more research. I've discovered that some clip-in type filters are available, which go on top of the actual sensor, and then I mount the lens as normal over that. Maybe that's the way to go for now? I'm still not sure which type to go for though - I see CLS, LPS, L-Pro, L-Enhance, and I'm still a bit bamboozled by which types are the best for which situation! This all started a month or two ago when I took some sky photos and liked how they came out, and now I'm down some money guzzling rabbit hole!! Thanks again for your reply, and for your videos! A lecture you did a year or two ago on astrophotography was one of the first videos I came across when I started researching this hobby, and it was very helpful to me!

Great question! It attaches to the 48mm ring that connects to the back of the telescope.

Great video. Btw, where does the Optolong L-enhance filter go? Is it on front of the CAT telescope? Does it fit (or do you need another adapter there)? So many different brands all needs to go together :) Thank you.

It mounts to the back of the Cat, there is a 2" thread there just for filters.

How are the banding issues with this camera? Like shoot a dark frame and increase the exposure.. do you see banding?

What lenses would you recommend for this camera on a budget?

Do I need to get my camera converted to 1. full spectrum (I am guessing that means removing the IR filter) or 2. h-a only or 3. do full spectrum and add a h-a filter or l-extreme dual band filter? I have an old d7200 which I am planning to use for it I am planning to use it specifically for astrophotography and love the advantages of dslr compared to ccd/cmos astro camera although they have low noise and no glow

I know you mentioned but how good is this camera for general photography? I want to be able to do both but am worried the Ra will not produce normal photos / videos. Any thoughts?

I really don't think there's any dire need for 30X because you can use bahtinov mask for sharp focus on stars and for Ha sensitivity one can astro-modify at a much cheaper cost. So, why would I want to spend money on this? A fair comparison will be Canon EOS R (Astro-modified) + Bahtinov Mask vs. Canon EOS Ra. Is there a difference in the picture quality?

I want to buy a camera that best to deep sky astro and day light normal photography.I heard about Canon 6d is good for astro.Could you help me with that?

Anything converted will be good for astro. I would look at an older 60Da and see if you can pick one up used 👍

I have a Canon 50D currently mounted on Celestron Evolution 6. So, I have the T ring and the adaptor. If I upgrade it to EOS Ra, do I need to get other T ring and other specific adaptor? Thanks.

They have a slight pink cast, but most of it can be fixed with a custom white balance.

Is the eos RA camera the same skintone as the eos R for portrait? please answer

It’s close but there are some differences. The Ra will appear slightly redder.

Use the build in Bulb timer. You can take as long as a 100 hours exposure

Yep! I didn't know about that one until recently when another viewer pointed it out. Still, it would be nice to have built-in shutter speeds longer than 30 seconds with a built-in intervalometer :)

I wish the hell Optolong would make the L-Enhance or Extreme for Nikons. Canon isn't the only camera out there. People are even shooting with Fuji cameras now. I had a Canon and hated it. Now I have Sony and Nikon.

Canon: "We have an intervalometer in the 6D Mark II and the EOS RP" Users: "Could we have it on the 5D IV, EOS R, EOS Ra, 1DX III and other cameras. Pleeeeease?" Canon: "Um, hold on a sec, let me just talk with the marketing department... NO."

My 5D mk4 must be special then.

Completely ridiculous that one of the hugely touted features is 30x. This could be enabled for ANY of the canon dslr line up simply with a firmware change. christ sake

With the high price I would rather get a dedicated astro camera and a seperate dslr for photography. That and the red halos dont make this worth it for me.

Yep, I completely agree unless you are looking for a mostly daytime camera that can also do a bit of astro.
