    That red flare on bright stars you get badly with the Moon with modded cams too. Also can't believe they still haven't added an intervalometer with a firmware upgrade though! Nice review dude

    Also the better input referred read noise results is based on the fact that you capture about a 1/3 stop more light with modded cams once the IR-cut filter is removed/replaced. Input referred read noise is based on the amount of signal you capture, so as you're capturing more signal, the input referred read noise is less.

    If you don't mind going third-party firmware I believe MagicLantern is working on something for the new Canon cameras that will add tons of functionality and control. I can't say if an intervalometer will be there... BUT you can always check them out and make requests. I'm sure they are currently looking for people to code and/or test their stuff.

    Excellent in-depth review, Nico. I love my RA camera especially having less noise at high iso compared to the R, but I do have one niggle and that's the focusing zoom of 5x-30x. I detest the 30x! (lol). I sure wish Canon would do a firmware update to include a 10x or 15x in there. Anyway, once again, great review. :)

    Another great Video Nico!!!! Very useful feedback for beginner people like me! It helps to better understand what equipment we should be investing by knowing strengths and weaknesses of it. I like what you always say that the choice of which equipment depends on what type of photos and our personal taste. I am very interested in the concept of shooting with a dedicated astro camera, however, I am terrified with the Idea of having to carry a laptop and other 1000 cables when doing astrophotos. Reason why I am flirting with the idea of buying a better DSLR to replace my old Canon 1100D. Thanks A lot for this and all the other videos!

    Great review, thanks for sharing. In regard to RF lenses, I'm using an EOS R (stock) and I noticed that the RF 24-105mm f/4L is very nice for astrophotography in terms of image quality, absence of aberrations etc. It's not the fastest lens and not a prime, but maybe you'd wish to rent one and give it a try. Cheers!

    Great video and review! I bought mine on Trevor J's review, (also, clearly, just for the box it came in) I thought it would be a once in lifetime buy but in Raw it is so good all round I've been round the clock a few times already. It certainly is a wallet melting price but I wouldn't be without it. Never mind the colour cards, try a picture of a rainbow. The 30x function is truly brilliant for focus with a mask and wide angle lenses. Sadly I didn't buy the filter drawer adaptor as it was another £500. Thanks for doing this Ra update review and pleased you've a positive end result.

    I have the QHY268C, it's an awesome camera. They now offer the Mono version so if you want to go Mono with colour filter wheel then that's now an option, although given the choice and how good the colour version is, for my usage I'd still go with the colour version and have way less to set up and process. Swings and roundabouts! This goes on my 9.25" SCT, and I have a t6i on a separate tracker for wider angle work, so I am looking at the Ra as an upgrade for that.

    Awesome work - a great summary there. I'm using a stock R and found it such a great upgrade from a 60D (obviously!). Two things from the video - your focus issues with the clip filter and Sigma - possibly caused by the low f-stop not playing ball with the filter and also the filter itself. Appreciate it's not Astronomik but Hutech advise for their clip in filters that the sensor needs to be shifted back to account for the extra glass / achieve correct back focus. Might be the issue? Second - I'd seen that 3d printed drop in you showes but there weren't any instructions - how does it work? It looks like you take out a 49mm filter from a screw thread and then drop it in the 3d printed one? Keep up the good work!

    My kit used to include a T2i for my normal photography and a modified/cooled T3i for my astrophotography. I had them so long I forgot about getting anything better and when I finally did I decided to go pretty big. Instead of the EOS Ra I ended up getting an ASI 294MC Pro to use with my ES 102ED and a regular EOS R off the used market for my regular stuff. I'm super happy with both. The dedicated astro cameras have a bit more of a learning curve compared to a standard DSLR or Mirrorless but even the 4/3 Sony sensor takes great pictures and my R has made me super happy in daylight usage. I'm still waiting on an adapter to try out my EF lenses on the ASI camera which will give a who new range of options. I like the comparisons you made between the Ra and the R for daylight photography, but have you considered comparing the R to the Ra as a night sky camera? I've been thinking of a barn-door style tracker to use my R as a secondary large-field imager while using my EQ mount and astro gear for the usual stuff.

Have you had any luck getting white gridlines?

    Black was a good choice for the colour comparison because black dyes are actually made from many different colours combined, so will be most sensitive to variations in image processing. When you bleach a black item you never know which colours will remain.

    I love astrophotography but I personally wouldn't pay that kind of hike on price compared to a standard Canon R I would rather have one modified or diy to be full spectrum (removal of the existing filter) and fit the filter required either as you've done clip in or via the adapter. The only good benefit for me is the 30x for focusing. My old Canon 7dmk2 has an interval timer and that's not an astro cam although pretty good cam. At least they've put a timer into the newer R cams. Great channel I love the level of detail you go into.

    I agree. If it's going to be used for an astrocam only, get the R+mod and save $400. If you will use it a lot for daytime use, I think the WB shift might be worth it for some as there is no way to get that other than with the Ra.

    Hi! I have a mirrorless Samsung NX300 only, plan to convert it somehow but don't see too much modding videos on this type of cam. I plan to buy a TTArtisan 50mm f1.2 lens for M4/2 and convert to Samsung cremoving mount from camera as flange is 25.5mm for NX and around 17-18mm for Sony and 4/3 mounts, I have to save 5-6 millimeters especially for infnite focus. Also I plan to buy a 7 artisans 75mm 1.25 Leica M lens which has 27.5mm flange distance, so could be adopted to NX and also has more focal distance but bit more pricy. Hard to find a fast lens for DSLR so have to go mirrorless.....

  • @NebulaPhotos

    @NebulaPhotos

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I've heard the Samsung mirrorless cameras are very good, but they are pretty rare. People typically go Canon and NIkon because there are lots of accessories and filters designed for those cameras. Here is a long list of camera modification tutorials: www.lifepixel.com/tutorials/infrared-diy-tutorials They don't list any Samsung models, but you might still get some ideas by looking through these. Good luck if you attempt it!

    @@NebulaPhotos thanks for the info, I only converted my old D70 many times to full spectrum and back :) but when I started astro a bit, it was not really good as too big light pollution here, so I have to put on it a baader UV-IR cut and it helps a lot, but D70 is still an old cam with lots of noise even at iso 800 and DSLR, so no fast lens for cheap, so I continue to experiment with the Samsung :) it is not that good in low light sensitivity as my D700 and D750, but cheaper to experiment and I ordered the 50mm f1.2 TTArtisan lens with M43 mount, try to convert and will se :)

I don't think they actually changed the optical formula. I will rent it if I see it come up at a rental house though to be sure. To be fair and honest, the red halo issue was a dealbreaker for me. I do deep sky astrophotography most of the time, so stacking is a routine. I would expect much more quality from a company like Canon in this regard, especially for such a price tag where the only difference is a few firmware tweaks and a different filter on the sensor. That said, at least canon isn’t ignoring this category of photographers and I hope they get things right next time!

    Does the Ra have a low-pass filter in front of the sensor? Because I heard that in R the IR-cut and low-pass is the same piece so modding it removes the low-pass which means a bit sharper photos.

  • @NebulaPhotos

    @NebulaPhotos

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes it does, lots of debate about whether a low-pass filter is desirable or not for astrophotography. I've used both ways, and I'd say I'd usually prefer the LPF to be removed. As far as I know, the R still has LPF1 and LPF2, so it's up the the modifier whether or not to remove the main low pass (anti-aliasing) filter or retain it. In other words, you should be able to change out the IR-cut filter and retain the Low pass filter if that is what is desired, but many people prefer sharper, but possibly blockier stars (it mostly just effects the small stars, I see very little difference on other details).

Specifically, do you think the RF85mm F2 Macro IS STM would be an adequate starter for deep-sky objects at about a fifth the cost of the F1.2 you discussed above? • @NebulaPhotos

    Hi Kerry, I have mostly been using EF lenses with the adapter ($99) on the Canon Ra. A good lens that doesn't break the bank for deep sky is the Rokinon (or Samyang) 135mm f/2 (under $500 in the USA). I don't have any experience with the 85mm macro, but on paper it sounds good. If you do end up getting the 85 1.2 (probably not worth it), don't get the DS coating, it is of no benefit for astrophotography. Congrats on the Ra! I still love using mine. Nico

    Have you tried opening the raw files using Canon software? Digital Photo Professional will fully understand the raw files, and most likely will give you different images, compared to Adobe raw plug-in.

    Yes, thanks for asking. I am trying to make my reviews shorter so looking at other software hit the cutting room floor. The short version though is DPP applies a curve to make the raw files look very close to the JPEG, which I find to be too red/saturated. I prefer the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) conversion which better matches the R. It is possible that whatever is happening in ACR is unintentional on Canon's part. I should have emphasized that the white balance shift happening is still there in the JPEG/ Canon DPP Raw. If it wasn't, auto WB would look much pinker everywhere, while the actual result is just like a very vibrant version of the R look, esp. in the reds.

    @@NebulaPhotos Hi, thanks for the answer. According to the Canon site: "Because it is designed for astrophotography, shooting normal subjects is not recommended." It only seems to be lucky that ACR does not take into account the shift, or should we say it seems like it drops that bit of information, as there is some minor shift, when looking at blue or pink subjects in ACR. (Would this mean Adobe engineers forgot to read that bit of information from the file?) Anyways I believe it is designed to be more red, especially as it is tailored to allow you to capture H-alpha light in a more enhanced way. I would be interested to see your processed shots where you add an extra step to your workflow, by converting the original raw files into tiff (or other digestable format for your app) using DPP and then combine them together for the final composite image. Another interesting part of the test would be to see what DPP does to the "red halos" as it is equipped with Canon lens correction features, so I would like to know if that helps at all? (this would only work when using Canon glass, but would be interesting to see the results)

    I have more information. DPP recognizes what JPEG picture profile was used, and seems to automatically apply that to the Raw photo before you do anything else. ACR skips that step, and seems to use the same curve on all photos regardless of profile. I was using the 'Standard' picture profile in my tests, but Alan Dyer rightly points out in his comment (I pinned it to the top) that a 'Neutral' JPEG picture profile would look much more similar to the raw look (that I prefer, and looks much closer the R's "standard profile") Regarding using DPP as in initial step in my astrophotography process: That doesn't fit my workflow at all unfortunately, as I keep the files raw/linear through a traditional calibration/registration/integration process with darks, flats, and bias. By opening the files in DPP and converting to tiff, I'd be baking in Canon's curve and making the data non-linear, at which point, I couldn't accurately calibrate the data. In my workflow, none of the WB stuff matters, and the red is retained just fine as DSS or PixInsight ignores the picture profile. But just to test your theory of DPP having special lens profile corrections that ACR does not have (are you sure about this?), I just tried opening multiple photos in DPP and then stacking them. It did not get rid of the red flares on bright stars unfortunately.

    @@NebulaPhotos Hi, Thanks again for your answer. It seems that ACR and as you say the stacking software are not using all image data. Where DPP is utilising all image data. Not sure about your full workflow, but I am guessing if you use only the image data from RAW files you are missing out on a lot of automated corrections that are taking into account the lens technical specs/data. Your stacking software may be good at eliminating noise and enhancing deep space images by adding useful image data together so the invisible becomes visible. Going through your editing process of reducing other optical issues like vignetting etc, it feels there we could save some time if you bake those corrections into a tiff. Using DPP noise reduction can be set to 0, you can also switch the curve to linear, and change the picture style as you would change before the image was taken by selecting the neutral profile and turn off all other enhancements, especially those you would like to do with the stacking software, you can even change the colour space to your preferred one even if you forgot to do that prior to taking the image. And when it comes to lens aberration corrections you can easily bake that info into the tiff files. If you were shooting with a lens that has a profile in the camera it can even record shooting distance and apply corrections accordingly using DLO or you could manually set the corrections for a few lens issues. Once you are happy with all settings, you can save and apply the recipe to your other images. I would be interested to see if you would push through your darks, flats, and bias the same process, just to see how much would you need to tweak the photos once they are stacked. I read my message a couple of times, and I hope this makes sense, but happy to explain my theory further if needed.

    I understand you want to shoot at a low ISO but the chart you show implies you should do the opposite, to use a higher ISO to get lower read noise. What am I not understanding?

  • @NebulaPhotos

    @NebulaPhotos

    3 жыл бұрын

    You want a sweet spot between the benefits of low ISO (larger dynamic range before read noise hit) and higher ISO (lower read noise at the cost of smaller dynamic range). Typically with Canon sensors the best ISO values for this are 800-3200. If I'm doing long exposures (minutes), I usually go with 800. For shorter exposures (under 1 minute), I usually choose 1600 or 3200
