I'm considering the r50. One thing that kind of put me off is the lack of third party lenses and the prices of the good lenses. I'm considering to maybe buy the body only and a better lens separately.

Great news because Sigma recently released their first RF mount lens for Canon EOS R crop sensor bodies, with more to follow later this year. Tamron are also bringing some out. So there will be a lot more choice. Check out our recent review of the new Sigma lens - it’s definitely a lens to consider!

I tell you R50 is a beast. Its about love the thing you do . I take mine every where I go my travel companion. The pictures omg it will blow your mind, i love with canon as it give life to the picture, this is my personal opinion.

Fantastic review! Thank you for creating this in depth and practical video. I have gone through 10 other videos that don't even show the camera in action. All they do is try to breakdown the specs... Thank you for actually showing the image quality potential of this camera. I have been stuck between getting this or a Sony ZV-e10 and think that I am pretty set on this for how I am going to be using this camera. Thanks again!

We see you using the R50 in the rain. We’re worried using ours in the rain as it doesn’t have any weather proofing.. did you find any issues with this? Obviously being UK based this poses a bit of a problem with all the rain we have, plus our vlogs are mainly outdoors all year round. Hopefully you can put our minds at ease a little

As a beginner it's everything I want in a camera and much more. The battery is really good but I have two spare just in case. I tried to take a picture of a Red Kite today sunning itself on a low branch with wings spread wide. Shot of a lifetime for an amateur like me My thumb accidentally knocked the setting to the 10 second delay setting.😭

The big issue is it is not weather sealed. I took it out in the rain. Ur thoughts on weather conditions? It would be helpful to see a video of the actual scene functions as well especially the HDR merge. For people who actually have it. Did u enjoy using it for street photography?

I've had the same issue here with my thumb constantly pressing the buttons on the side. I'm considering returning it and purchasing a different camera because of this.

It is frustrating, the design is very similar to the EOS M50, but the M50 had a bit more room for your thumb and I think this is the issue. When the R50 is refreshed for a Mark II (I don't expect to see this for a while yet, so don't get excited!), I hope they'll address this. But, I do think you will get used to it and you can change how some of the buttons are set (cam.start.canon/en/C011/manual/html/UG-10_Custom_0030.html) so maybe see which you can change and how you get on - thanks for watching ☺

Seems like a great option, but what I'd like to know is if the 1 hour video recording limit (not mentioned in the video but is there in the camera's specifications) is a hard limit - meaning once it reaches an hour it will shutdown, or that time is the average/minimum time before it overheats.

Thanks for watching 😊 As it’s outlined in the specs as 1 hour, this is a hard limit and assumes that your card or battery haven’t run out before then and that the camera hasn’t overheated before then (this will depend on the external temperature and the frame rates and settings you choose).

13:51 Hopefully somebody that says it!! The camera is so small and so full of buttons that I keep pressing them unintentionally all the time. Sometimes the * button, and other times the cross pad, enabling or disabling things that take me seconds to disable when I'm in the middle of taking a shot. I ended up using the camera with the screen closed, just to have a place where lying the thumb :(

Yeah, we did find that really annoying! It's a shame as its such a great little camera otherwise and being so small and light is a major advantage. Having so many controls is also an advantage, but not when you're constantly pressing them by mistake! Hopefully you'll get used to the handling of it - maybe keep your screen turned around for image review and menus, but disable touch screen? cam.start.canon/en/C011/manual/html/UG-09_Set-up_0220.html

I disabled most of the D pad buttons (only the bottom one enabled for “Max Display Brightness”. Also remapped the video capture button for depth of field preview as I never shoot video and can always use shutter release in video mode if needed. Control ring (or control ring on ef adapter) configured for exposure compensation only when half pressing the shutter release. I also shoot with display closed most of the time and only open when I need it. So configured I rarely hit anything accidentally anymore. This is a back up and travel body to pair with my R6 and 5DSR. I mostly use EF lenses (the EF 24mm f/2.8 IS with the control ring adapter is perfect on this tiny camera), but also bought and use the 16mm f/2.8 RF and 28mm f/2.8 RF (pancake). Which together make a wonderful ultralight kit with 25.6mm and 44.8mm equivalent focal lengths. EF 35mm f/2.0 IS is also wonderful on R50, but does push the size a bit. I’m currently traveling in Japan and Korea for a month and for the two week Japan leg of my trip I left the full frame gear behind and just use the R50 with the two RF lenses and the EF 24 and 35. Image quality rivals my R6 in all but the worst light, and it is a real load off my shoulders.

If you were to choose a budget RF lens for vlogging which has IS but also allows more field of view, when needed, which one would you go for? Thank you so much and keep up with the great work 🙏

So glad you liked it, thank you 😊 The RF-S 10-18mm is probably your ideal vlogging lens. I've done a review of that lens too and tested it for vlogging in that video as well: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4p_rbmydN2tj7w.html (the vlogging section is in HD, when the rest of the video is shot in 4K, so please excuse the quality drop here. I'm not quite sure how, but I managed to do the vlogging test in Full HD by mistake... probably because I was juggling 3 other cameras and reviewing 3 lenses all on the one shoot! 🤯)

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! We were using the Rode VideoMicro with a Deadcat windshield on the EOS R50 that day, which did a great job of blocking the wind! It's a small and very lightweight shotgun mic, which in the UK costs around £75ish. If you wanted something more versatile which you could also use with your mobile then consider a wireless mic like the Rode Wireless Me or the DJI Mic 2. The downside to a wireless mic is that it's another thing to charge and you have to wear it on you. But you do get the extra versatility. @@abdulhanan6245 oops, forgot to reply to the original lens question! For general vlogging, the Canon RF-S 10-18mm will give a much wider view than the 18-45mm kit lens, BUT as you've mentioned that you want to do night time... it's not best suited to low light as it's quite a "slow" aperture at F4.5-6.3. You could consider the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 (which we review here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qn6mo9mPdLioe9Y.html) which would give the same viewpoint as the lens featured in this R50 review, or Sigma are bringing out an RF-S 10-18mm F2.8 later this year which would probably be perfect. Neither of the Sigma lenses have IS, so I would try to find a review of the R50 with the Sigma 24-50mm to see how this affects the stability for vlogging - it's not a combination we've had chance to test. Same with the low light I'm afraid, haven't tested it properly at night to give you a first-hand definitive answer - although that day we filmed wasn't the brightest of days!

We don't tend to "edit" photos for videos. If we do, for example to show how versatile the dynamic range is from a RAW file, then we'll put the jpeg SOOC and the RAW side by side for comparison. We will run images through Lightroom to process them and tweak exposure where we've missed it through poor choices on the day! If I remember correctly, we only had jpegs to work from on this model as CameraRAW didn't support the RAWs at the time of publishing, so any processing would have been minimal. If you compare the video samples to the stills, you'll see that they match up nicely and reflect the actual conditions on the day.

Is it weather sealed? Was it ok in this rain and weather?

Hi I just bought the canon R50 and have been trying to use the panorama mode but not successful. I have used the Sony HX400 V camera panorama mode and it was easy to use on the Sony camera. But for the Canon R50, it always stops half way and does not allow me to complete the panorama shot. Just wondering how do you use the panorama mode on Canon R50?

It's probably just that you're not holding it steady, you do have to move slowly and along the line on screen. The vlog video is way too close, laughably too close. That's what you get with the 18mm focal length in that lens. Why didn't Canon go with 15mm for the kit lens?

If you watch that section you'll notice that the issue isn't so much the close crop (which was user error and explained in the video!) but the fact that the lens is SO easy to nudge when you are changing settings. I was constantly knocking it and changing the focal length - it was quite annoying! The 18mm isn't actually that bad, but yes 15mm would be nicer as would a lock on the lens to prevent this as it didn't just happen the once, but somehow every time I turned the camera around.

I am thinking to buy R50 for landscape or nature photography, street and wildlife photography etc Happy to get the suggestions 😊

In Canon R50 as there is no AF-On button then can we customize any other button for "Back Button Focusing". As most of experts suggest back button focusing for birds photography. I am asking it because if "Back Button Focusing" is possible in R50 then only I will purchase it.

It really doesn’t sound like the EOS R50 is the camera for you. If your budget is around the cost of the R50, then we’d recommend seeing if you can stretch it that little bit to buy the R10 which is more suited to the needs you’ve expressed. We’d recommend visiting your local camera store or getting in touch with them for some proper advice based on your what it is you’d like to achieve though.

The EOS 2000D (or Rebel T7 outside of Europe) is a good beginner DSLR. Learn the basic skills with this camera and then you can upgrade to an EOS R mirrorless camera when you are ready and enjoy the benefits. Thanks for watching!

Any RF lens. Some are built to be used with the APC sensor (RF-S lenses), the full format lenses work as well but are way heavier and there is a focal length magnification due to the smaller sensor. (1.6x or something in that ballpark, don´t remember).

The Canon EOS R50 can be used with Canon RF and Canon RF-S lenses. All EF and EF-S lenses can be used by attaching the optional mount adapter EF-EOS R. But please note that the R50 cannot be used with EF-M lenses. Hope that helps 😊

There’s lots of sample images and video in there to demonstrate the camera being reviewed - but how can we film footage of the camera in use or the camera itself… with the camera? For this to be feasible, we’d have to have two of every camera whenever we review something… and most of the time it’s hard enough getting one. We also can’t have endless cameras and lenses for content creation use... we are a business and like any sensible business we don’t have a bottomless pit of money to buy equipment and have budgets to work within. If you watch the review you’ll see the sections shot on the camera are labelled so you can clearly see which are samples from the review camera. Hope you find the review useful 😊
