The announcement from both Sigma and Tamron that they have reached an agreement with Canon to produce RF-S lenses certainly helps the value proposition of this camera (and other RF APS-C cameras).

This is a terrific review as usual dustin. I absolutely recommended this camera and the r10 to friends as a beginner camera. Canon's menu systems are so intuitive and easy to use that it's very accessible for someone coming from a smartphone. The addition of sigma glass really makes this system a lot more attractive. I hope Canon continues to support with some of their native glass well.

R50 + RF 28mm f/2.8 is the best combo ever! So much fun to use.

Definitely more fun than the kit lens!

Of course since you produced your video both Sigma and Tamron have announced the first officially licensed auto focus lenses for Canon RF, but they are just APS lenses for the cropped frame bodies. But as you point out, those are the cameras most in need of a wider lens selection. So good news there. No word on when we will see third party lens makers allowed to create RF versions of their full frame lenses.

Sigma and Tamron can use a legal loophole where the lens is for apsc on paper, yet de-facto covers full frame. sigma's 50-100 f1.8 almost does that, by the way

Not any more. Canon forces my full frame R bodies into crop mode when the 18-35 f/1.8 is mounted. I expect it’s the same for the 50-100.

I've got R50 to replace my ZV-E10. Imho it's the best overall performer in the current sub-700USD price range. Superb AF, good 4K30 HDRPQ, easy controls. The lens issue wasn't a concern. I run it with RF28 pancake and RF100-400 mostly. If there is a need for standard zoom, adapt Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 contemporary is my go to lens. The whole RF lens issue is mainly due to lack of research on finding the right EF lens. It's the cheapest system to go for if you are willing to look into the used/grey market.

I have the impression that Canon's APS-C target market is intended to be mainly beginners, semi-enthusiasts or full-framers like me who just stuff an R50 in their Barbour pocket when we can't be bothered to take out all our usual gear, so a large RF-S lens selection is not necessary (I am aware Tamron and Sigma have announced the development of some RF-S lenses). I would definitely buy an RF-S 32mm if one is ever produced (and the 22mm) if they are of the same quality as the EF-M versions, but otherwise I wouldn't acquire any of the current RF-S lenses because they are "a bit average". I'll make do with my RF lenses. If I was a serious APS-C shooter, I think I would invest in the Fujifilm system.

I'd love a new RF-S version of the 22mm F2. I loved that little lens.

My current, non-pro, take anywhere, very lightweight travel set-up is a now ancient EOS200D, EF-S24mm and EF-S55-250. Hmmm............

lets be real. canon gave up on its apsc model. the only reason they are allowing sigma and tamron glass now is because they don't want to make apsc lenses.

I don't think I would say they are giving up, but I do think that this move helps solved a serious problem for them.

The Sigma and Tamron announcements have made the bogus 3rd Party arguments invalid. This is a Genius move by Canon.

I'm not sure I would call it genius to allow lenses that have existed for years on other platforms to now be released on yours. It's a very good move, yes, but genius?

Actuall r100 is not as bad as they say. Either the debayering is very smart, or there is no AA filter there, but those 24mp are sharper than any other canon 24mp Dunno about r50 though

Should be using the same sensor.

Personally, i don't see any reason, to buy into the cheapest R50 EOS RF-S system. One can get any decent DSLM onto the used marked, think EOS-M5, albeit (way) limited lens collection. The RF-S 18-45 is a really inferior kitlens, not worth it, for that, to join the system. And especially 1st timers, beginners, would stick often with their gear and kitlens for a long time... As always, its great to have choices, as buyer. Thanks for your always being well made, comprehensive reviews, Dustin.

2:41 This is where the recent announcement of 3rd party APSC lenses really come into play. Sigma and Tamron will be filling a need that Canon has no vested interest in fulfilling, and this should drive their APSC body sales further to some extent.

The third party lenses just announced do help, but your point about getting lenses that have been available for years on other platforms is fair.

The price is good, maybe Sony will follow with smaller prices 😂😂😂. I am a Canon user just waiting to jump to Sony 😊

Possibly. Canon tends to price their cameras lower and their lenses higher. Sony does the opposite.

@@timoteiafanasie4894 what are you using now? If you aren’t getting a7r5, a9ii, FX3. There’s no significant advantage for going to other Sony bodies. And if you’re coming from DSLR, upgrading to R6ii/R8/R5 are the cheapest solution as it’s just an adapter and you’ll be good to go.
