The Canon EOS R3 is coming up or has already been out for a year by the time you watch this. How does it hold up a year later against Sony's a1 and Nikon Z9? I was hesitant to use the R3 as my main camera, but the lens lineup, body feel and image quality really won me over. This is the One Year Later REVIEW of the Canon EOS R3. What will the R1 bring?

I have been a canon guy since the 70s so staying with the brand was not a question for me. I most recently was using an R5 and an R6, my wife pushed me get an R3 and I gotta tell you, it is in every way the best camera I have ever used. I was a bit intimidated at first but I got over that pretty quickly. It is so easy to get an in-focus shot every time. I love it. And Skittles is the best pre-set ever created!

15:09 I find the eye control very useful indeed. I don't need to calibrate it all the time which means that although it's never absolutely accurate the biggest thing for me is that it really helps move the focal point instantly to where I need it, which is very useful for weddings etc.

I shot some NASCAR and IndyCar this past weekend with the R5, and it was really my first major use of the vehicle AF. While it didn't always know what part of the cars to focus on, I was legitimately blown away by how quickly it found both kinds of race car and how well it stuck to them. I was picking up cars from over 400 feet away like it was nothing, whether I was panning or stationary with a car driving straight towards my location. Back in the DSLR days, it always took a moment for the AF to start tracking something. Canon's mirrorless AF system is really special. If I had the money for the R3, I'd for sure have one in my bag. I used a 5D Mk III for five years, so I know that 24MP is plenty.

Great camera, especially the autofocus. Three issues I have faced: One you mention as well the lens backup is more difficult to put on. The second is the bad quality of the Eyecup. It broke down within three months and replacements aren't available for months. The third issue is that the eye-control doesn't work for me. Probably has to do with my glasses. All in all highly satisfied.

Very well presented video, Jared. I am happy owner of two R3s and I would choose them all over again if I had to. The body design, ergonomics and feel is top notch and makes me want to take my cameras out all the time. Autofocus is superb as well as the customisability. I have always used back button focus (before on Fujifilm) but it's only now when I switched to Canon R3 that I was able to set up dual back button focus and it's been a revelation for wildlife photography. Video features are fantastic, especially with the newly added FHD 240fps mode, which looks great upscaled to 4K btw (replaced the 4K 120fps for me). I do wildlife photography and filmmaking, yet I have never owned high megapixel camera, so 24mp is perfectly fine for me.

Also Jared, we have a lot of screens that go 4K to 8K resolutions, or some movies/video games or artists in digital content may use textures up to 8192x8192 px for rendering 3D and cg. That's why my camera is the R5, because of the resolution and the fact that I only shoot stuff for digital screens and or artist textures and content and I have sometimes to get to 16384x16384 pixels by stitching images! The 24mpx R3 is definetly usable for this kind of contents but it's a waste as I don't need most of his features for that, that's why I completely agree with you on that, for sports, prints or anything it's just the sweet spot and files are not too heavy!

Thanks Jared. That was very informative and helpful. I'm getting close to completely kitting out from new (even though I'm a total amateur). 75% of my shooting has always been rugby, so I'm needing something that focuses really quick. I've always been a Nikon man, but with the amazing sounding Canon line up and Nikon line up I'm struggling to decide. Shooting rugby, I usually have to crop most of my shots and my biggest concern is how much I can crop from a 24mg camera and keep the quality there.

As for the pain in the ass rear lens caps, what I did was paint a small line with a silver Sharpie that lines up with the metal contacts on the back of the lens. They're much easier to see, especially in lower light or when your lens is in a bag. Lining the Sharpie up with those contacts makes it a lot easier.

Hello Jared, thank you for this review. I got the R3 since 1 year, It is better than my previous 1DXIII but I am expecting a lot from the R1. Hardware - 45 Mpix - 30 fps raw / sec - New battery with usb-c slot - 2 CF Express B slot - Better weather selling solution for the flash - Better EVF - One addionnal Button for the backfocus on the back - One additionnel Button on the top at left for HDR & Mutiple exposure fonction (it is so boring to have to go within the menu to get it) Software : - Better autofocus menu than R3/R5 - Better eye control solution (it does not work at all on the R3 for me) - Better network menu (Shame on Canon for this menu since the 5DM3)

+1 on the RF rear caps, but as least they go on "clockwise is lockwise", unlike Nikon which drives me even more nuts. Also +1 on R3. I had and sold two Z9s as part of comparing side-by-side w/ the R3. I doubted my decision to sell the first Z9 so bought another, but came back to the same conclusion. The Z9 res is a plus, but love picking up the R3 and shooting with it -- I can't say the same for the Z9. The R3 just feels great in the hand, I prefer it's A/F system, and I prefer the RF glass. Basically, what you said. I do wish the R3 had more res for more flexibility, but the R1 will be out soon enough (12-18mo) and I will just trade-up to it when that time comes.

Bought the R3... and later the 28-70... I used it for windsurfing photography , there the eye focus is bit 'weird' , not working all the time, but I never had a camera that was perfect for windsurfers on a hefty sea , grey skies and windforce 8 in your face ;) Camera's have difficulties detecting windsurfers, it's that simple. With video, used it in a 40 minute interview, forgot to put it on 4K , 'only' shot on 1080p , with the 28-70, ... you cannot see the difference almost, it's that sharp and detailed. I still have to shoot more with it, but having the R5 too, I didn't feel the AF was snappier yet, but that's perhaps since I didn't use it for portrets or something like that yet. The 28-70/F2.0 ... damn, that's a lens... it's a beast, but glad I bought it, since I read to many reviews that the 24-70/F2.8 RF wasn't that different from the EF version (which I still have also). I will slowly replace my EF glass I think, and sell my 1D-XmkII... so then I'm fully RF mount'ed.... Canons lenses are expensive though, so... one lens I probably will not replace, and that's the EF 500/F4.0L IS II. way to expensive to 'replace' and I doubt it will make a big difference. O btw, at Tony and Chelsea, Chelsea ditched the Canon R5 / R3 since, she liked the Nikon better now, or was it the Sony.... Doesn't mather, she will switch again within a half year... seems the lady can't shoot with the current camera's... so always goes for the next best thing on the market (and ... has tons of money do replace her whole gear everytime).

Jared. Great review. I'm shooting with the R5 and thinking to upgrade. Honestly I live the R3 but think if they would have dropped the eye control and lowered the price it would have been all anyone ever needed. I'm sure that eye control function cost alot. Which leads me to why everyone thought it was supposed to be their flagship cuz that's a flagship feature. I got a feeling R1 will be 60-80 mp with a half resolution mode, dual CF, dual Digi X processors, and all the bells and whistles cuz that's a mic drop camera. For the encore song. They will come out with fully AI tracking modes. Similar but better than the new Sony. Lastly but not least canon. Wtf. Give us pre and post burst on the R3 like the R7 has. WTF!!!

R1: 30 MP with global shutter to completely eliminate rolling shutter, dual CF express cards, and improved video specs. Maybe dual USB-C ports to expand simultaneous charging and tethering options, but that will still not satisfy dongle-haters (not judging!) who would rather have a more robust HDMI port built-in. And of course, they also need to enable Jared to capture the viewfinder video that he craves!

I have been enjoying the R6 for a year and a half now and am wondering whether to go all in and get the R3. I don’t do video, only stills. Portrait, family, street, travel. I have a 6 year old son who I photograph all the time so I guess that also qualifies as wildlife/action photography. I like to print and display my photos, up to A1 size. And I don’t crop much, if at all. I don’t need 45mp since I don’t see any difference in prints over the 20mp of my R6. What’s more important to me is the low light performance, color science and AF. Also build quality and durability, since I travel to remote locations where I expose my gear to inclement conditions. I don’t buy every iteration of a camera. My previous one was a 5DIII that I had for 10 years, and I miss its tank-like body. But I figure that now that the R1 will be coming out, which I’ll never afford or need, it might be an opportunity to jump to the R3 once the price drops and keep it as my one and only camera for at least a decade or two.

Interesting and informative video. For me the big thing that neither the R3 or the Z9 can match is the form factor for the A1. I absolutely love the small body that I can add a grip to when needed. I've gotten spoiled by the recent mirrorless trend of smaller bodies. I bought the Z9 and liked a lot about it ( I actually think the AF does some things better than the a1), but at the end of the day the form factor felt like a regression. I loved nikon's new glass, but have been blown away by the quality of the GM prime lenses and they are lighter and faster. I would love to take an R3 out for a spin one day, but I've never been able to get around the button layouts, and their glass seems to be behind even Nikon.

@@jbilly24 I make money shooting sports so I'm entirely aware of how cameras are used; I think you entirely missed my point. A1 keeps the smaller form factor of modern mirrorless. Add grip when needed. Z9 is heavier and only marginally smaller than D5. R3 is lighter and smaller, which is great, but its a positive in my book to have a full featured flagship that you can reduce the form factor on as needed. It allows me to use the camera for more things. The A1 offers that, but I realize that's a personal preference. However, my point was that as mirrorless has gotten smaller, Nikon went back to a camera that weighed more and is almost equal sized to their full-size DSLRs.

@@nickmorgan5933 assuming we're talking about Canon or Nikon deciding to either do built in vertical grip, or an optional one, the optional one will be heavier than it built in, if all other things stay the same. and that optional one will have worse structural integrity.

I’m using the R5c and R3 strictly for video. The evf on the R3 is perfect and blacks out the edges. The r5’s evf is no bueno and they don’t offer any extra eye piece to give a black out site.

In the first 25 years I worked on Nikon. At that time, no one worked on Canon. However, when autofocus and later digital cameras came along, Nikon lost the market. The first two digital Nikon cameras, however, were quite bad. So, like many photographers, I switched to Canon. Now that mirrorless cameras are becoming the new standard, the time has come to possibly switch to a different system because new lenses are a must. Jared, I've been following your tests and reviews. Canon, Sony and Nikon all make good cameras. However, Canon stands out with its perfect ergonomics and lightweight body, very important for professionals. and that 24 megapixel is more than enough. I've worked with 16 and 20 megapixel cameras for 19 years and never had any problems with clients. The last years of my career I will continue with Canon and yes it has become the R3.

How does EyeAF work with prescription glasses? Some times shooting unit photography I have to shoot on very dark sets. Have you tested the camera at 32000 ISO or 64000? I am curious how much noise the files will have before bringing it into Photoshop and Lightroom.

  • @onlysublime

    @onlysublime

Actually very dark sets should help. Imo the people that have the hardest time with the eye controlled AF are the people that don't completely press their eye up against the evf so light from the outside can leak into the evf. If you can get a good seal between your eye and the evf so that no light comes from the outside, it'll work well.

No offense to Jared, but I don’t understand his praise of the RF Glass released so far. If the 28-70 is not an appealing lens (for monetary reasons, or other), then Canon’s lineup is actually quite poor. Canon’s lack of high quality lenses under the $1000 mark is really disappointing. I personally prefer shooting on primes, and I don’t want to spend f/1.2 money just to get an internally focusing, weather-sealed lens.

As a "semi-pro" photographer, I certainly would like to see more "affordable" RF glass - especially primes. Yes, you can purchase EF (often at GREAT prices) and an adapter or spend the extra money on "pro" glass. I've done both as I've built my R6-based system. Everyone's use case is different. I think of my lens purchases as investments. I'll have them for years with the distinct possibility of owning them long after I've upgraded bodies. The old photography saying applies here: "Marry the lens, rent the body." That said, I can't wait for a RF 85mm 1.4 to be released!
