Zeek - I just purchased this camera and returned my Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5k. I love the fact that this camera is compact, and shoots at this level of video. You inspired me to take a shot at this camera, and see how far I can push it. Thanks for posting the beautiful videos that you post. I’m looking at picking up cine lenses later on to have some stellar glass to couple with the body. I hope I can get on your level in terms of results. Zeek i've noticed you've filmed alot of your older videos in 1:1 aspect ratio, it looks amazing! Is there a reason to pick this over 16:9? I mainly use mv1080 16:9 with an SLR Magic 133 anamorphic adapter. Cheers!

It has slightly more resolution, but once you export in post you have to stretch it a bit to make it look normal. I haven't used it in a while so things may have changed. I'll test it out and see. Thanks!

I encoded this RAW File to Arri Log C hence the name/title. It was easy to grade.

how do you know the uhs_sd overclocking module is working?or is it only working in cropmode 5x?do you know where i can find sd card bench marking module?ow i am on canon 700D.thx

Zeek! I watched this video again on my 4k TV. Again, I am speechless. Love it. Undoubtedly. But I wonder, if this same shots taken from real ARRI camera, what things it would give that we might be missing from this footage? Grains? Or something else?

Thanks! Love this one too. ARRI Alexa has more Dynamic range, higher resolution, then you can add diffusers or something like pro-mist. You could add grain. Lens choice is important too.

Hey, cheers. The battery life is amazing in my opinion. I used only one battery for the whole day. I turned it off when I wasn't using it, and turned it back on when I wanted to record something. I shot a total of 87 RAW clips this day and it had about 13% battery left. I have never experienced any heating issues!

Zeek.. if I can ask... Why am I getting pink sky and/or very bright areas in most clips? Even compensating for correct exposure and/or aperture doesn't seem to solve this, I have to close aperture a lot or resort at using filters. May be I have some incorrect settings somewhere. Where I should be looking for? THX for any help.

LBTRA you get pink sky of you clip IT. Nd filter is the best choice. Second is in MLV app, lift the highlights up until the pink sky leaves.

@Zeek Thanks Zeek, This problem seems to be affecting the build I was using before, not the one from Danne which has MCM rewire. BTW, I found this answer in the ML forum: www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=22726.0 (post nr 8).

Finally got my eos m! Been testing it out, i can get continious record times in 4:3 and up to 1.2:1 but 1:2 only gets me around 5 seconds even with the sd card hack on and using sandisk extreme pro cards. What could i be doing wrong?

Update: i get continious record times up to 1.175:1 which is almost 16:9 when you import in davinci(which is perfectly fine by me), but still can't get continious times in 1:1 or 1:2. SD card hack on at all times, loving this little camera so far.

Did you use any type of softening filter such as a Tiffen Black Pro Mist?

Nope. This Zeiss copy had fungus which caused the lens to "glow" and look like a Tiffen filter. I guess fungus is not so bad after all. I had to sell the lens as the focusing became really stiff. I'd definitely buy another one

Hi Jay, yes you need an M42 to EOS M adapter. If you want to use it with a speedbooster like how I did you will need an M42 to Canon EF and then a Canon Ef speedbooster to Canon EOS M. Thanks.

Honestly, most of the credit to the faulty lens. It had a glow (a bit like a pro-mist filter) thanks to the fungus inside the lens. From memory, I used Alexa LOG C from MLV App nothing else touched and exported. I added one Triune LOG Lut and that was it. Other than this, I cannot recall much.

Any nd filters used? And can the speed booster create the same image over a focal reducer? (sorry new to photography) lol

Yep. Fotga 52mm Variable ND. Speedbooster and Focal Reducers are the same thing just different marketing strategy for the item name. This lens had a bit of fungus which caused the weird but awesome glow. 🤔😣🙂 I used an M42 Mount to EF Adapter on top of the speedbooster.

Wow this is the best eos m work yet! Do you do any kind of sharpening or noise reduction? And what do you think is the max iso you would use with eos m? I seem to get so much color noise shooting raw.

I do sharpen the image because once I export the video on final cut, it slightly ruduces image quality. I use no noise reduction. I shot at 100 iso for the whole day. I used to get a lot of noise too with magic lantern.The eos M seemed ok because the footage without ML was very good in same conditions. I found out that Expo Override setting on exposure tab in ML was on. I simply switched it off and the noise was significantly lower. Maybe it is worth checking this exposure setting. Hope it helps.

Hey Zeek, I bought this camera because of you and your videos, very inspiring! I used magic lantern raw before on a 6d from my girlfriend and used a 2.50:1 aspect ratio, can you explain to me why most people record 1:2 on the EOS M?

Awesome Oliver! Yeah, because the EOS M uses a crop algorithm for RAW Video, the aspect ratio is different. 1:2 is the highest quality aspect ratio and is why we choose it. Thanks. Also had the 6D, loved it.

I just bought the Canon EOS M, but without a lens. I have a zeiss Jena 50mm laying around but I dont know the adapter to mount it to the eos M. Which one are you using or can you tell me how you did it ? :)

I used an EF to EOS M Speedbooster, then an M42 to EF Adapter on top. You need type 2 M42 to EF Adapter to be able to change the aperture on the Zeiss lens.

Just wondering.. its not mentioned in the gear list but are you using an ND filter. One thing I can say is I seem to get great footage inside but shooting at ISO 100 at 1/48th outside is wayyyy to bright to deal with. If you're using an ND filter (which I suspect your are) is it a fixed or variable ND?

@@milanjani7615 It's the same workflow as Blackmagic if you export as DNG. With DNG 8GB will take less than 5-10minutes. But yeah, if you're not into that stuff then obviously it's better to go other alternative mirrorless cameras.

It sure does, as long as it is an autofocus lens. Here, I only used manual focus.

Very nice. The only EOS M film out there that's interesting and shows the potential of raw. I wonder, did you use highlight recovery when processing RAW? You could get some highlights back that way you see.

Thanks for the comment. I didn't use any highlight recovery. It's pretty hard with the EOS M because of the low dynamic range. Also, because I was using a speedbooster it allowed more light in. I think the EOS M's dynamic range is around 11.2 stops without RAW and about 11.8 with RAW, so it is okay.

@@ZeekEOSZ With highlight reconstruction and the highlight slider you will get more highlights back. Don't use the MLVApp just to export to edit, try to get your highlights back first! :)

Zeica? I'm guessing you mean Zeiss. This set up is easy. He set up is Canon EOS M + EF TO EOS M Speedbooster + M42 to EF Adapter V. 2 + Zeiss 50mm F2.8. Oddly enough I believe what made this filmic was the fungus and haze inside the lens which produced a glow/soft film effect. Unfortunately I had to get rid of the lens as the focusing was stiff from the time I had it.

Love the 6D heaps. I used to produce the best footage with it (not on KZread). Against the EOS M, Id take the EOS M any day. You can get the full frame look as well as crop and you get better resolution, aspect ratios, 4.5k mode etc. It's form factor is also another selling point.

@@orionlight7164 The 6D has a place in my heart being my first ML Full Frame Camera, but honestly, the EOS M Surpases it. The Aliasing on the 6D can be quite "unbearable" and the resolution is not as good as the EOS M. With the EOS M you can use both Full frame and Full Frame lenses and the size is impecable.

How is the file size when shooting raw?

depending on how long you record, it can be quite big (around the GB mark), it's higer if you upscale, but there is no issue here. Just get a 1TB USB Portable Hard Drive and you're good to go.

@@atjeremy I still have this lens, including the F2 pancolar version, the thing is this lens had fungus as the seller gave me a bad copy. It bloomed which oddly in my favour created a nostalgic, cinematic, tiffen-promist type look. Guess fungus in lenses could be good sometimes lol...btw this lens has amazing Color rendering.

Raw utilizes the whole camera sensor to create the best video image possible. Raw captures much more detail, dynamic range and leaves heaps of room to colour grade in post. H.264/normal video is compressed and therefore the image will have less quality, dynamic range and detail overall compared to raw as well as less room to play with in post when pushing the footage to its limits as it is usually 8 bit compared to Raw which can capture 10-14bit colour depth with Magic Lantern.

I may have to look at picking up one of these EOS-M camera to replace my current Canon ELPH Powershot HS300 as a small portable camera that packs a huge punch. It seems it would be easier to carry around and shoot video indescritly with over my GH5 and Z Cam E2.

@@PaulKepnerProductions I used to have a GH5, Sony A6300, Fujifilm X-T3, Sony PMW-F3...Sold them all to keep the Canon EOS M. I do miss 4K, but ill never sell the EOS M. I have two by the way.

I didn't record in 4K, I just exported the video from the editing software as 4K instead of 1080p due to KZread compression. It's called upscaling to 4K. Cheers.

Zeek, i just need to know why did you upscaled it? does the upscaling makes the exported footage looks sharper than the original?

@@choc0chips91 KZread compresses the video to make it less sharp by reducing the bit rate. Upscaling helps combat this. Thanks.

Yes this all raw in the 1080 mode with 1736x976 resolution. No rig was used. Just handheld with a neck strap.

is there an additional crop factor when shooting raw?

No, just the 1.6x typical crop factor in raw using MCM Rewire 1080p

@@ZeekEOSZZeek, with the c mount lens, there must be some kind of crop factor, yes? What setting are you in MCM rewire when you use the c mount lens? I have been looking for a fast wide angle lens for cheap. Would you recommend the c mount lens over a canon fd lens or mc lens? The prices are so tempting for the old 16mm telezooms with a c mount but when used with magic lantern in the 3x crop mode would I be giving up image quality that would show if upscaled to 4k? Bottom line, do you use 35mm lenses more than the old c mount lens because you want the highest resolution possible?

@@roberttinari562 There is only the 1.6x crop factor. Here I used a 75mm lens. So 75mm X 1.6 which is why it was a little shaky hand-held at the start. I prefer to use 35mm lenses with a Speedbooster. Currently I like my nikkor, Samyang and minolta lenses. I use these c mounts for cool tests with anamorphic or other stuff, but they're not my main choice for a short film.

@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks for the info! One last question. How does the footage stand up to upscaling to 4k? I ask because I am not able to tell from watching on youtube. If you shoot in ML 2.5k does it look any better than the 1080 you now shoot in when upscaled?

@@roberttinari562 2.5k does look a little sharper, but a bit more flat as it has more of a crop factor. When 1080 is upscaled it looks absolutely superb, pretty much like a 4k camera. KZread doesn't do it justice. But when you export the files as 3840x2160 or higher from MLVApp they look great!

but the original footage is is HD ? then you have upscale in 4k?

Yep! Upscaled in MLV App to 3840x2160 [UHD] and then placed in a 4K Timeline in FCPX.

@@alotankako6855 Yeah, they appear 'sometimes'. If they are appearing all the time, I would try the updated version of ML in the description of the tutorial video if the aliasing is really bad.

I guess if you could afford a glidecam you wouldn't be shooting on an eos m, lol... 10/10 for sound design, composition & grading for sure... would have been cool if you really owned the shaky camera and added delicately placed film defects. Thanks for this :)

Haha. Even if I owned a glidecam or a gimbal, I still wouldn't use it with the EOS M as the continuous AF is not the best. I used to have the Sony A6300 but sold it because I prefer the RAW footage from the EOS M and am not too fascinated with 4k or even 6k for what I do.

How do you stabilize your shots btw?

I use a neck strap, pistol grip, sometimes tripod and some clips are stabilised in post in FCPX.

There is none. There are plans to load ML on the M50 sometime though!
