Canon EOS 650 & EOS 620: How to use - Video manual
A video showing how to use the Canon EOS 650.
Made in 1987, it was the first model ever of the Canon EOS series featuring the new EF lens system which allowed autofocus.
Canon EOS 620 followed a few months later and was almost the same but had a few different functions, like double exposures and higher shutter speeds.

My dad bought this in Seoul when he visited from England to watch the 1988 Olympics. It lived in a box in our garage for my entire childhood and I used to imagine taking pictures with it because it didn’t get used in the 90s and early 2000s after the family got a digital camera. He gifted it to me this past year so it now lives with me in Canada, and this was the perfect video to get an idea of how to use it. Thanks for the simple to understand tutorial!
I just acquired the Canon eos650 as my first film camera and this tutorial is so helpful! Very complete, well explained and easy to understand. Thank you!!
I recently thrifted this camera and your video has given an in-depth tutorial of how to use it compared to any other videos on youtube! Simple and easy to follow❤ I was able to use it right away and have no issues operating the camera. Thank youuuu
Thank you for a great tutorial! I found this camera in my basement a couple of days ago, it was my fathers in the 80ies :D
My late dad bought an early example in 1987. I inherited the camera a few years ago and it is currently loaded with film. It still looks modern, compared to other camera's from the 1980's. Easy to use and all you need is available. Thank you for your indepth tutorial!
Just picked up one and this tutorial was so in depth and explained beautifully, thank you!
The best quality of video-manual I've ever seen! Thank you!

Interesting. To think nobody knows how to use it. My dad taught me on mine, but without him I wouldn't know either. They are sorta complex in a way
what a great camera, bought it as a gift and this is a great video! Now I can show her how to use it. Very helpful! Thanks!
Awesome video, I just dug up my late dad's old 650 he bought brand new in good condition, this help alot thx
Just ordered one of these and this was a fantastic video I love how thorough you were thank you so much
Outstanding video. I am reliving my sentimental experience with 630 that ended 20 yrs ago. This camera is timeless, outstanding design and incredible capability.
I'm an experienced photographer and I know may way around a camera but this has been really helpful in explaining what you can and can't do on different modes as well as explaining the confusing "Depth" mode. Thanks 🙂

Very underappreciated and underutilized feature. Canon never explained it or marketed it well, and I never used it when I had an older DSLR. Funny, I think the 650 explained it better since my DSLR didn't indicate the two focus points with dep 1 + 2.
Excellent video.
Great tutorial! 👍
thank you for this great video! this video made me more confident on purchasing the 650 and I just received it in the mail!

Very detailed and helpful explanation. Thank you!
This video manual is great, thank you so much!
I used the 600, 620, and 650and RT cameras. They were great cameras, but no longer as the 600 range suffers from oil leaks onto the shutter blades a common fault with these. All of them I had suffered this sadly.
wow I have this camera real good vid Manuel
Great video! Super helpful! And the music is spooky 👻
my brother had it, I looked at him as if he had a lamborghini. She was amazing, good memories!
Great tutorial video! I ordered mine and expected to come in next month This gonna be my second slr after nikon fm10
Great video! I bought this camera and used this tutorial to find out how to use the camera :) Just an important notice: It's unable to set/change ISO in "Full auto" mode.

I love you, brother ,, you are a great and creative man, may God bless you ,, Hope for an explanation of the Nikon F4 camera Muhammad from Egypt.
Looking for some help. Recently bought a used 630 on eBay for a class, and when in manual mode and following the instructions in video, my camera only displays (OP) as I try to adjust aperture, and never displays the dots or (CL) no matter how I spin the dial. Wondering if this could be a possible defect, or a result of me using a tamaron lens over a canon eos branded one.
Thank you for this 🙏🏼
I bought this camera and using the mark one of Canon EF lens. It takes a loooong time to get the focus. Should I buy the mark 2 lens?
@FilmCameras

I don't think its the lens. I think that the focus speed depends on the camera body. This camera is the first EOS, that means that its the first one that used this autofocus system. So it is normal that it is slower than the modern EOS cameras.
Great video! That background music though? 😄
I took 20 photos and the roll returned, how can I take the last 15 photos that I have left? ?

Great video! I have a 650 w/ a 35-70mm lens but when I flick it onto the AF mode on the lens, the camera doesn't turn onto autofocus mode, what do you suggest I do?
First timer learning how to shoot film, & I know you said you have to have your ISO the same as what your films says but if you go manual why do change it? I normally shoot on a Canon 6d & I only use manual on it. Would like to use manual on film as well.

In film photography the ISO is a fixed characteristic of the film you choose to put inside the camera. It is not like digital cameras where you can change ISO any time. In film cameras, if you want to change ISO you need change the whole film. Once you have the film inside you can only play around with shutter speed and aperture. In this specific camera when you set the ISO (in 3:20 ) you do it, so that the camera can calculate the exposure times and aperture according to the film you have chosen. This way you can see the indications of overexposure or underexposure. Of course if you go fully manual and you don't look at all the light metering of the camera, you can skip the ISO setting, but you have to always remember what ISO film you've got inside the camera in order to correctly choose your shutter speed and aperture.

Film Cameras okay got it. Thanks so much for explaining it more in detail with me I appreciate it. So what mode do you think one should have it on with the ISO fixed already if I was only able to move the shutter & aperture?
@FilmCameras
4 жыл бұрын
@@Ozzmaticjpeg If you want to have a fully manual function, then choose "M" Manual ( see 9:50 ). All the other modes can be helpful only if you have set the correct film ISO (see the video description index for more details)
thanks!
Great video! Thanks! I have the EOS 620, and I was wondering if you could help my out by explaining what the two buttons on the back are. On the 650 in this video, there’s only one button on the back.
@FilmCameras
2 жыл бұрын
The 2nd button on EOS 620 is for display panel illumination. When you press it will illuminate the display for about 8 seconds. Also a good feature of the 620 is that when you press the "MODE" and "EXP.COMP" buttons at the same time, you can take multiple exposures. When you press those two, use the dial to choose how many exposures you want (you'll see the count on the display).
Loved the tutorial! do you have any sample photos? I bought this camera to stay in trend with the 2020 film photos but not many seem to use this specific one. So just wondering.
@FilmCameras
4 жыл бұрын
I don't have any samples to show, but the result depends mainly on the film you choose to use and also what lens you have on the camera. But generally you should expect very good results if you make correct exposures.

Thank you so much about this video! I bought Canon eos650 as my first film camera for my first ever photography course and this tutorial is so helpful! But I do have a question about light meter and how can read it. I know that in manual mode, I can change shutter speed and apeture but is that the same as light meter?
@FilmCameras

In manual mode, when you change the aperture and the shutter speed, the light meter will help you by telling you if your settings will result in a correct exposure or not. See at 10:12
Hi! I just got this camera and in AF mode, as soon as I press the shutter button (half way) it starts beeping and doesn’t stop. I was just wondering if I could get some help :)
My two ISO buttons don’t seem to work.
The leading edge of the film tab should never go pass the orange indicator. You're asking for problems by loading it the way shown in this video and others. Read the manual. You can download them for free. They have pictures and they will also answer all your questions.
Splendid tutorial with the speakers off, the music was rather annoying. :-)
thx great
What if I have 3 bars in battery I just bought but it’s blinking
I bought a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3,5-5,6 lens - thought it was compatible for thiscamera but it doesnt fit. Do i need to buy an adapter? Or what lens are compatible for this Canon camera
@FilmCameras

EF-S lenses (for digital crop sensors) are not compatible with film SLR cameras. You will need a Canon EF lens.
hey ! Great video !! I just bought this camera and would like to change it to one shot but i cant. It reads M. Focus do u know how i could change this? Thanks

Hi! Check 5:11 on this video. M Focus means that your lens is set in manual focus. This changes from the lens. Also for switching to One Shot check 6:24 on this video.

my camera says BC whenever I try to take a picture outside. when I was inside, the camera worked fine, but outside it refuses to capture the photo and just says BC. could you help?
@FilmCameras
4 жыл бұрын
This can be many things actually. First make sure that the "bc" problem occurs in all shooting modes and not only in Manual. Then try using another lens if you have one, or switch your lens to manual mode and see if you still have the same problem. It is also possible that the lens contacts (on lens and body) need good cleaning. Another thing to check is the battery. Take it out, thoroughly clean the contacts on both the battery and the camera and let the battery rest for a day out of the camera. If the problem still persists, try buying a new battery. If none of these work, then probably your camera needs to be repaired. But if you do get it to a repair shop make sure that the repair cost is not bigger than the value of the camera!
Hi do you know how to use external flash with this camera? Thanks!
@FilmCameras
2 жыл бұрын
When this camera was launched, Canon was marketing 420EZ and 300EZ speedlights for it, which you can now find in good prices. Fortunately you can use a variety of modern speedlights for this camera too. Not only Canon but others. But you better ask for compatibility or test if it fires before you buy (you can test if it fires without having film inside). And for best results, when using flash better set the X-sync shutter speed lower than 1/125 sec.
When I switch my 650 off, it still displays the amount of shots left on the roll of film. This is draining my battery. Is this normal?
@FilmCameras
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is normal. For this reason, you better remove the battery when not using the camera for a long time. But if the battery is new it should not have a problem staying on for lots of days, even weeks.
Do you have any recommendations on adding flash to this camera? If it is possible?

I have a Canon EOS 650 that drains the battery very very fast.Any help?
@FilmCameras

Battery drain in these cameras often comes from some fault in the EL backlight of the LCD display. It might drain the battery even if the camera is off. So you should remove the battery when not using the camera. You should probably get it to a repair shop and see what they can do if indeed this is the problem.

I own this camera and even with a 50 mm lens on it wants to tip over onto the lens lol
To do multiple exposures? Thanks
@FilmCameras
3 жыл бұрын
You can't with the EOS 650 camera. Multiple exposures are available on the next model the EOS 620. On 620 you need to press and hold the "MODE" and "EXP-COMP" buttons on the top simultaneously. At the same time rotate the dial on the right and chose how many exposures you want on the same frame (you will see "ME" on the screen). Take your desired number of exposures and the film will advance automatically. Afterwards you'll need to remember to reset the exposure number to "0" if you don't want to keep on multi-exposing.
How could I connect this to my computer or iPhone?
@FilmCameras
4 жыл бұрын
This is not a digital camera, so you can't do that. But once you get the film developed, you can scan it with a film scanner and have the photos in digital format.
This was a pivotal moment in how Japan had stepped ahead of the German competition. And let's not even mention the East Germans (Russians) who were decades behind in functionality, reliability and quality - and still are. Have you ever heard of a Russian international car like a Toyota or a Honda? Nikon, Sony, Fuji* and Canon have had it sewn-upped for decades - and... well... they deserve top accolades for the up-to-35mm frame. I feel sorry for companies like Rollei, who were just as good in the hand-made 70s' mechanical F2AS age but totally lost the plot. Only Leica survived but very few can afford any of their cameras now, like Hasselblad (or Phase One) - weirdly surviving European brands and oddly still the benchmark for the best quality in, now, digital imaging. Well OK Mamiya did make a good transition, along with Fujifilm* - but anyone doing high-end stuff, it's a Phase One/Schneider combo or possibly a Leica S if you're feeling fancy!
Quanti megapixel ha ?

Non si può calcolare i megapixel, perché questo modello non è digitale. È una fotocamera analogica a pellicola 35mm.

OMG another bad video with good reviews.....
Nothing seems to explain how to use a manual aperture lens and it’s insanely frustrating. Av doesn’t display accurate shutterspeeds when using a manual aperture lens.
@FilmCameras
Жыл бұрын
Once you've selected AV mode, you can use the dial to set the aperture you prefer. Then, once you look through the viewfinder, you will see your chosen aperture along the automatically set shutter speed. If the shutter speed is blinking it will indicate overexposure or underexposure. If you believe that the auto shutter speeds are not accurate you might need to get it for a check. Finally, make sure you are using EOS lenses compatible with this camera, so that everything works properly.

@@FilmCameras that’s my issue then, I think. I’m usually using EF Zeiss classics, and that all works perfectly well, exposure is perfect, but my 100mm Makro is a Nikon mount. That wasn’t a mistake on my part, I simply have multiple cameras, but none of my SLRs are Nikon mount, so I use an adapter. Many of my cinema cameras have Nikon F adaptors for all my Nikon mount lenses, like AI’s. So I’m attempting to figure out how to use them on this camera, if that’s even possible. I guess what I’m asking now is how would someone with an EF lens with manual aperture on the lens use this camera or is it strictly for electronic EF lenses?
@FilmCameras
Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about the manual EF lenses, but this seems to be the problem. It seems logical though that only electronic EF lenses would allow the shutter speed to work properly, because they should be coupled to it through the aperture. Better try with a proper electronic EF lens, or a series of electronic adaptors for other types of lenses. Sorry I can't be more specific on this one.
