Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens review (with samples)

I'm still using APS-C lenses because my new Canon 70D is so good for video work. After using this new lens for a while I decided to go ahead and keep it - it really is surprisingly great, and pretty fantastic value for money. Take a look at how it performs, in one of the longest reviews I've ever put together!

If I can get a photo of the moon, then that already makes me happy. I hope I can get some photos of animals too. I can get within 15 ft of many birds, but they still look like a spec in my photos. I hope this lens fixes that for me.

@@hopefulexe The lens has it's limits for nature photography, but it is possible to take passable photos of animals. It can be hard to get something commercially viable though. I did get a decent photo of the moon, but I don't think it's good enough for commercial use. On a consumer level, it's good for the price. You just can't get anything on a pro level without extra work. 250 mm goes only so far, but I am happy with it.

Great, complete review! I love that you showed both photos and videos and just went through all the points that make this a good buy. You've just convinced me to get it! Thank you.
Christopher, this is a great video, very informative, great pace and no boom, boom music in the background. I totally agree with you about this lens, one of Canons best ever bang for buck products, well worth the money. Anyone that has the new Canon 750D (which I have) should get one of these, they are a match made in heaven, fast focus, silent, not too heavy on the body and produces superb results.
Wow, this is a fantastic review. Very well organized, paced, and delivered overall. And you clearly worked hard to demonstrate this len's capabilities though a lot of different scenarios. Good job, Christopher. I'm really considering buying this lens.

I just purchased this lens for my Canon 80D after watching this review - great lens, love it. Thank you Chris for this great review (and other vids), without you we will all be lost in this huge uncharted land of glass
Hey Chris, first of all thanks for all the reviews, man, they are a great piece of work. It's the second lenses that I'll buy based on your reviews. Big cheers!!!!
Your reviews are great, Christopher! They have definitely helped me with my decisions. Keep up the great work mate!
Hi Christopher, thanks for taking the time out to make such an awesome review on this lens, i've just ordered one for my 750D and I'm really exited to take it out. All the best!
This was a great video. I'm always so impressed with these lens reviews that you do. They are always so thorough. i just recently purchased a used c100 markii, and I am absolutely loving this camera. I own the canon 18-135, 10-18mm and the sigma 17-17mm f2.8-4. All great lenses, but I wanted something a little longer for video that wasn't too heavy since the camera already ways a ton and i'll be using this at weddings. I find that lowlight performance on the c100 is so good that you can get away with slower lenses. After watching this video, I know it will be the perfect value lens for my work. Thanks!
This lens is great on my T6i, especially with the cameras built in lens aberration correction enabled. The T6i also fixes barrel distortion
After a few years of using, I can say with confident that this is SUPER sharp. The compression is also AMAZING

you convinced me to buy this lens for my 70D, great video and a great review!!
I've just purchased this lens on your recommendation after looking through many different options and this review came up trumps! Keep up the good work.
I had to come back to this video after 6 years and honestly need to say thank you so much for this review Chris! I have taken my best shots using this lens, and in ALL sorts of environments!! My favorite shot was at a skating acrobatics show while myself and my fiancee were in the 400th seat, very high row. The only lighting were spotlights which made for some amazingly dramatic shots!!! I have just sold off all my Canon gear to move over to Fuji mirrorless but I will forever remember this lens as being one of the best ive ever used on Canon APS-C. Sharp, ridiculously quick to focus, good reach, light... I've taken many shots of the moon with it as well ☺️
I recently bought one of these, and must say its performance is pretty insane at any price. I used it professionally for the first time last night - mounted on an 80D - alongside a couple of L lenses, and the results are almost beyond belief. As Chris says, every APS-C user needs one of these!

I LOVE this lens. Though I have a couple primes - and I absolutely love them - I still love shooting with this 55-250 at 5.6 and smaller apertures. I use it in studio and other indoor portrait photography a lot. I also use it outdoors if I don't need especially low light capabilities or don't want to shoot with really wide apertures. When I shoot in the studio with this lens no-one can tell that I didn't use a horrendously expensive lens. The image quality is that good. I typically don't have to worry about the Variable Aperture thing because I only use this lens at 5.6 or smaller so I can zoom in or out as much as I please without the consequence of the aperture changing on me. Zooming in from around 200mm up to 250mm it vignettes quite noticeably. All in all, I really, really like this lens.
Really really fantastic review. After watching your review I would like to buy these lens. Your explained minute details. I'm very much happy for your review.

I've just taken delivery of the Canon 55-250 STM this morning. It was a toss-up between this lens and the Tamron 70-300 VC. Both lenses have been reviewed here and both got excellent ratings. So, which one to go for? Well, reading between the lines, I got the impression that Chris had a slight preference for the Canon, giving it a "Very Highly Recommended" rating. I made the buying decision based on this and went with the Canon. Glad I did, tack-sharp and with wonderful auto-focus (even in low-light) on a Canon 7D (18MP). Canon's optical know-how, gained from their experience with the very pricey Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS series has obviously filtered down to their less-expensive lens offerings. Moral of the story? Don't buy any lenses without getting Chris's opinion first! Other KZread photo channels often do direct one-against-one smack-downs on direct competitors. Idea for some new updated videos even with items that have already been reviewed on their own? Thanks for all of this great info Chris!

No! EF-S lenses are designed for use with APS-C sensors and the effective focal length will be what it says on the box. Only when using an EF lens which is designed for use with full frame cameras do you have to multiply by 1.6.
@AXYZE
6 жыл бұрын
+John Nott, you always multiply it. I have native Panasonic 25mm f1.7 lens for my Panasonic G7 which has 2x crop factor and it has the same FoV as Nikkor 50mm f1.8G mounted on Nikon D750. EF lenses compared to EF-S have just bigger diameter of glass to cover bigger image circle which is useless for EF-S cameras.

Your 55-250 STM hat a red ring, so must be L quality
Christopher, first of all, thanks for the great reviews. The canon 55-250 stm is brilliant !. I use an ageing 400d but love using it with the new stm lenses. The 55-250 is my newest in my kit, and I find that it is just as you say in your video really very good indeed. I also own an 18-135 stm, but the 55-250 is way better in almost every way. The 18-135 is my general use lens, but the 55-250 is now my 1st choice for anything approaching telephoto.
A wonderful review; enjoyable, compact, sharp and illuminating with little distortion. Now I know what I'll buy for my 250D to replace an almost vintage heavy and stiff 70-210. Thank you!
Great video & review all in all. Now the challenge is for me to get amazing photos just like in the review. Ive used mine only once in a Hot Air Balloon Festival since I bought it 2 months ago. Happy I got it. Thank you for the review.
I was about to "settle" for the refurbished 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III ($75 on Amazon as I write this comment), but I saw your video review and saved myself from making a big mistake. I will be picking up this lens as soon as I can! Thank you so much for your review of this lens. I really enjoy your lens reviews and examples. As a new photographer, what you point out is very helpful. You just got yourself a new subscriber!
Bought one this morning. I’ve been looking for something light with a good image. Thanks Christopher!
What an amazingly comprehensive review!! Will be back!!
Love your reviews. I think this review helped to make my decision on the kit purchase I’m making. I have a choice between the 80D with this lens + the 18-55mm, which I also watched your review on. It seems that that lens is not great, but not bad. I was also thinking about getting the kit with the 18-135 but that’s a much higher price then I can get the other kit for. Based on how great this lens is compared to the 18-135mm I’m going with the two lens kit. Thanks so much for helping me with this decision.
Great review! This is one of the best teles out there, especially since it is so cheap and so lightweight. Great choice!
Great review I got this lens as part of a kit lens deal with a 700D and what fantastic results I am getting. I would highly recommend this lens. People are surprised with the quality of the images from a kit lens and an entry level DSLR. Just get it
Just what I was looking for in a review. thanks ole chap.
Great review, was really useful and I think I will go for this lens kit. In the beginning I thought of going on a Tamron 18-200 (stabilized) to have the one lens for all situations, but didn't like the problems you showed in your reviews. This one is great considering the price and the STM technology, plus image quality and focus capabilities. Considering I'm trying to budget a bit, what 18-55 lens I could pair with this and stay low on the price while not loosing much quality, I'm more likely to use the bigger focal lenghts most of the time so I want a lens that's good enough for those rare(not so rare though) shots but still stay low on the price.
Thanks for this review. I had the first version of this (55-250 IS STM even not the "II" version of it) and for the price it was impressive. Thinkking about it it was impressive even without thinking about the price. Since then I had to sell all of my photography stuff, but after some years I miss those really nicely composed shots we can only do with a proper camera and they are impossible with even the best cellphone, so I am looking for an 55-250 or a 70-200. For the CA and the vignetting: I like vignetting I usually add that during the post processing it just pulls your eyes to the subject, and the 70d takes care of the CA. The lens looks perfect for me adding that I am looking for a lens for shooting videos too.
Man this is such an informative and downright pleasant review. Thank you sir! A sub for you!
very helpful review. I might buy this lens. thank you!
I just got one of these today. Thank you for the great review.
