I’m still waiting for my adapter however it seems canon is showing you the equivalent f stop, rather than the actual opening of the lens. So while it was reading 2.8 for both tests, the lens was actually stopped down further on the C70 in order to give the amount of light and DOF you would be expecting without the speed booster. Theoretically the DOF and focal length should be much much closer if you simply had the same lens at their most wide open, and then count stops down from there.

Thanks Jesse! My brain was breaking trying to figure out how the speedbooster could *increase* DOF with an equivalent f stop, focal length and distance from subject, but this explanation makes so much sense. I don't think showing equivalent f-stop is good practice...seems pretty confusing.

Exactly. For a real 1-to-1 here, you have to have the C70 at 1 stop lower at all times. That's what the speedbooster does to begin with.
Hey Griffin, really like your presentation style. DIrect, honest, and down to earth. Thanks for keeping it real and relaxed.
Great video! Thanks for all of your content. I just got the C70 and you’re helping me out a lot. Keep it going!
Great Job Griffin I was really waiting for this test I think your reviews are among the best
Love this channel - as a small team (2) and using Canon and Leica your advice and reviews are impeccable. Will be buying a C70 mainly because of you reviews. Many thanks.
Really great stuff. I’ve been a Canon shooter for years and this is one of the most useful series I’ve found. I can tell you’re out there working and living with the gear. Thank you!

Thanks for that video. Just received my C70 so any info on how other people are getting on with it is very welcome. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for the video, my Speed Booster will be here tomorrow and I was happy to see your test. Now I feel confident that I did the right thing and will start using it in my work.
Awesome breakdown! Glad I found your channel a few weeks ago. Debating on investing in the c70 now that I’m doing more video shoots and becoming a big part of my business. currently on a 5d4 since I was primarily a photographer
Really appreciate all the C70 insights. Looking hard at this camera.
Thank you so much! Very informative!
Nice job, Griff. I appreciate the analysis. I just received my C70 a couple of days ago and waiting to receive the speed booster. I have another adapter and have used the sigma 24mm lens on it and it autofocus seems to work the same as on my R5 and 1DX MK III.

Thanks for telling the world that the AF does in fact work with lenses other than the three canon originally mentioned. This pretty much solidified my purchase.
This is great Griffin! So I think what is happening with the speedbooster is effecting how the aperture values appear. One thing to note is the an F 0.9 setting on the C70 with the speedbooster is equivalent to the F 1.2 on the C500 Mark II. The numbers change because Canon (and Sony for that matter) felt that speedboosters should provide the equivalent aperture settings or put another way, show you that the speed boosters are converting the lens in use to a +1 stop version. So with the speedbooster combined with the 50mm F1.2 used on the C70 you get approximately a 50mm F0.85 Aperture lens (rounded to 0.9) on a crop sensor. I wish they would just adjust the aperture to read out the lenses in their full frame equivalent so you can match to other full frame cameras, but instead the apply the math accurately and read out the new calculated aperture factoring in the size of the sensor in use. So when you set the aperture to 0.9 on the 50mm on the C70 with the speedbooster you are setting the f1.2 50mm lens to the same wide open setting as you are when the 50mm is on the C500.

I think the C70 with speedbooster gives you a reading of the aperture based on the compensation for the extra stop of light. Meaning F2.0 is not really F2 but it´s F2.8. You should do the same test with manual aperture to confirm this

@@shzammpatapon9865 at same aperture (not what the camera says but same position of the actual iris blade) the dof is identical, only the native is cropped compared to the one with focal reducer. Now if you want to move the camera with focal reducer closer to the subject and reframe so that you get a similar field of view to the native, then it's not comparable anymore and obviously you get shallower dof by moving the camera closer

I would be very interested in a sharpness/optical degradation comparison between full frame and speedboosted c70. Normally with speedboosters (especially cheaper ones) your loose some image quality (most noticable wide open on the edges). I would be interested how good canon's adapter-optics are made.
Did you find the autofocus covered less of the frame when using the speedbooster? Great video by the way.
Good job man
You should move your C70 closer to the subject when using a speedbooster in order to get a similar frame composition, which will make the C70 and C500 ii have a similar DOF.
As a Komodo owner currently figuring out the best rigging options, I would love to see how the Komodo works with the speedbooster. Im going between PL cine glass or a speedbooster and FF EF glass. For about 2 years I shot exclusively with the GH5, Metabones speedbooster and the sigma 18-35 F1.8 and it was great. I'd like to see if the AF works on the komodo, also can you try some more tricky lighting situations please? This highlights lens issues :)

Great work! I'd personally love to see the Komodo tests, too.
@GriffinConway
3 жыл бұрын
Great! Ill keep that in mind. Thanks!
Great video really :)
The speedbooster adds 1 stop of light and the camera compensates te number of the f stop for it so when it says 2.0 the it is actually 2.8 only one stop brighter. So that is why the depth of field matches when you open up 1 more f stop. But to really compare you have to set the fstop 1 step brighter since it’s actually the same. The extra stop of light is one off the benefits of a speedbooster.
Hey! Great video! I got a question. I heard that when using the the autofocus with the speedbooster, the C70 can only autofocus on a smaller part of the field of view. Is that correct? is it the part inside the black frame on your screen? Thanks a lot!
Great video. Thank you for sharing. I think the issue with the depth of field appears to be because the lens was wide open on the c500 and stopped down on the c70 to compensate for the added light from compressing the image on the speed booster so even though the image was close to the same exposure, the smaller aperture of the c70 was giving you a wider depth of field. Since the sensors are not the same size there is no perfect “apples to apples” comparison but if you want to compare bokeh you would want to make sure both lenses are wide open and adjust exposure through ISO or ND.

Great video. Very interested in the komodo test since the komodo sensor size is effectively a 1.33 crop. 1.33 x .71 = .944. Curious how much more wide this seems when comparing directly to a full frame sensor.
Would be have to see a speed booster on the Red! Exciting times in the gear world.
Thank you 🙏
Speed booster is a focal reducer. Wider focal length means deeper DOF. And of course the c500 has a shallower DOF it’s a full frame sensor and the c70 is super35. Just because you use a focal reducer doesn’t change your sensor size.
Hey Griffin, great video. Depth of field is kind of fascinating isn’t it? The reason your lens matches at f/2 on the C70 and f/2.8 on the C500 II is because that is when your lens is stopped down to the same physical aperture size. The speed booster is simply compressing the image circle projected by the lens on to the sensor. At f/2.8 on the C500, the lens is stopped down to f/2.8 internally. If you took this same lens configuration and put it on the speed booster it would become f/2 due to the reduction in focal length. But the image is still the same. This means if you have a 50mm f/2.8 it becomes a 35mm f/2 (both of these keep the same 17.7mm physical aperture) but you end up with the same framing between the two cameras because of the smaller sensor on the C70. When you stop down to the same aperture of f/2.8 on both cameras you end up with a 50mm f/2.8 setting with a 17.7mm aperture on the C500, and a 35mm f/2.8 setting with a 12.5mm aperture on the C70 with speed booster. Smaller physical apertures = higher depth of field. So what you observed is absolutely correct! You have to open the aperture one additional stop to match depth of field (and light collection) with the speed booster. If you stop them down to the same aperture you’re eliminating the advantage of the speed booster. You should always use 1 stop wider aperture and 1 stop lower ISO setting when possible to achieve full frame equivalent noise and depth of field.

Ya it is interesting for sure! It was fun to test this for myself and see it in the real world. Thanks for watching!
Was super excited to get my 0.71x canon booster. Arrived today and will be going back to RF lenses. I used the 24-105 Ef ii and the autofocus motor was being picked up by the rode mic I had on top. Any point in keeping the speed booster for manual lenses? Just the extra light and wider field of view with manual lenses I guess?
hey, cool video about your exposure differences, this is because you used camera to control aperture and the speedbooster compensate the "boosted" aperture. so it's not reflecting the real aperture of the lens if you use a manual lens, stuck on f2.8, you should have a close result with speedboosted c70 and C500, then see more blury DOF with booster than without cheers
Thank you for doing the test. Was waiting for that! Is there any noticeable loss of sharpness when using the speed booster compared with the C500 m2?
@GriffinConway
3 жыл бұрын
There is none that I can notice...although the 6k sensor in the c500 mark ii is sharper overall than the c70
Hi. Did you test the sharpness on fast lenses wide open with and without the Canon focal reducer? I have another brand on another camera, but the image is so soft at f1.8 that it is unusable, I even notice it at f2.4. Without my focal reducer my lens is super sharp and great even wide open f1.2. Considering the Canon if the image is good at f1.8 and more wide open.
Hey Griffin, any chance you have info recording RAW on a C200 using a SSD drive? The Cfast cards are crazy expensive and I understand this could be a viable workaround. Great video by the way. THX!

The dof was deeper cause you closed the aperture of the lens to match the reading on camera but that number relates to light not the opening of the lens
I'm using the speedbooster on my Komodo, and it seems the aperture number still remains the same. Not really sure how Canon speedbooster works, but I think both cameras need firmware updates for this. Base on my experiences of using MB speedbooster for FS7 and Bmpcc4, the aperture will have 1 more stop faster and allows you to set the aperture at F2 while you use the F2.8 lens. So technically the speedbooster will not affect the DOF, and it only gives you a wider view and faster aperture. For example, 24mm F2 & speedbooster on S35 C70 will match up with the 24mm F2.8 on Full frame C500II, but 1 stop brighter.

Perfect. The adapter gives FF depth of field one stop wider than the equivalient full frame setting, with that much more light. The C70 is better in shadow recovery, making it's dynamic range better than the Sony. Cuz going for lower exposure is never a problem. But shooting in a light starved setting is pretty common. The down side of this camera for me is not having AF work in low light for dark skin. I find the C70 nicer thant the C500. I think you can make the C70 look like the C500 pretty easily with some de-saturation and white balance adjustments. But making the C500 look like the C70 a challenge I would like to see. Given that you can do a lot in post, I presume it can be done, the question is when does it start to fall appart? And going the other way, if you want that C500 cinematic look, is the corrected C70 as pushable as the C500? Over all I am super impressed with the smoothness of the mid tones on both.
It would be great to see a speedbooster test with the komodo!
What would happen if you put the speed booster at a full frame canon dslm like a canon r5 or r3?
3:58 don't quote me but the reason for that difference in background blur is because of the sensor size. 50mm(lens) x 0.71 (speedbooster) x 1.6 (sensor crop) = 56.8mm lens F2 x 0.71 x 1.6 = f 2.272 full frame equivalent
Bro nice comparison but speed boosters only gives you full frame field of view bit It will still behave as a crop sensor. Also now you have one more stop of light because of the speed booster you will need to be at 1.4 to get the same depth as the as 2.8 on a full frame.
Amazing video! There is a possibility to implement that speedbooster to the C200?
@GriffinConway
Жыл бұрын
I wish but I don’t think that’s possible because it’s EF mount
When using the same lens, are you able to achieve a blurrier depth of field with the C500ii? For example, if you set the c500ii wide open to f/1.2, will the background look the same as the c70 set to f/0.9? If so, in terms of DOF only, what is the advantage to having the full frame? Thanks for the review!

C70 and B-Cam Canon R6 as a second camera, i use the fullframe R6 for the wider mastershot like 50mm, and the c70 with closer70mm ore 85 mm for example. so i can regulate the DOF very easy, by exposure balanced with variable ND filter on the R6.. (i have to use C-Log-3 cause the R6 doesnt support clog2) that works great. Greetings from poor berlin :-) C500II is to big ;-)
