Hey guys, one correction to my video: Lighter skin tones in clog 2 should hit around 55 ire. That camera was used for a livestream the day before and was in bt709 so it displays different values for proper exposure (yes I realize the irony of this lol). Everything else I said about rating the camera for the proper iso, using false color, and watching for clipping in the highlights and shadows is all still accurate. Done is better than perfect, and I don’t have time to reshoot it this week. Hope it is still helpful 🤙

so when you are shooting green screen with the c70 and C500 (my life basically) what ire are you targeting for the greenscreen? Also what ire for darker skin tones? thanks!
@franciscobf

Is this why your highlights were clipping at 100 ire? In clog 2, my highlights are clipping around 85 % and the zebras aren't spot on on this camera. Thanks for the video.
3 жыл бұрын
@@franciscobf Se my question. But if the camera was set to Rec709 profile then they clip at 100%. Highlights in Clog2 are clipping at around 80%.

Totally agree, you can take days for making it perfect but not getting it online! I really prefer not to be perfekt but helpful as your videos really are. Specially in real scenarios. Many youtube videos are theoretical - yes they help too, but as a filmmaker we have to deal with the real stuff and get the job done as good as possible. ... last thing.... Sub... done!

It seems so counterintuitive to raise the ISO in very bright situations but if shooting in some flavor of clog I like to think of it in terms of making the sensor MORE sensitive to very bright situations to capture those highlights, ND up, set ISO to 800-1600. Nice job, per usual. 🤙🏼

Thanks for this C70 series. I'm a doc filmmaker who just got my hands on a C70 after over a year of researching and waiting. As a former C-100 mk II user, I'm loving this camera and it is everything I wanted but didn't have from the C100. I'm hoping I can use this camera for the next 5 years, at least, and bring in a C300 mk III or C500 mk II as the A-cam on gigs when we have the budget for another rental.
great tips again! I didn't realize that about the better highlight retention at 800 vs. 400. Thanks, Griffin!

Great tip about ISO. I think many people see "base ISO" and think they need to stay there in every situation and you explained perfectly why that isn't the case. If I was shooting with my URSA G2 in the scenario with Flo, I would be at ISO 1600 since it has even better highlight details than 800 on that camera. So valuable really knowing your camera. Great video brother!

Great video, Griffin! (and thanks for the correction post about waveform viewing in Rec709). I realaize that a lot of people struggle with the concept of raising ISO in highlight-heavy scenes, as it does seem counter-intuitive. This is how I think about it: In a log space, I NEVER view ISO as an exposure tool. Rather, I see it as a tool to either a) maximize dynamic range (set at native ISO), or b) reduce noise (set lower than native ISO, to the detriment to highlight range). As in, if it's bright outside, I want the most about on Dynamic Range, so I would set C-Log 2 to ISO 800. In a dark space with no specular or extream highlight info, I would lower it to below native and be fine with the loss in highlight range, since there's nothing that will be lost in that range anyways. Hope that helps with anyone trying to wrap their head around this!
Thanks for this video and particularly your explanation and logic for proper ISO settings.

Thanks so much Erik! I really love the c70. It’s and amazing camera with a ton of great features
As a low budget/indie filmmaker, it's important to be able to shoot most anywhere and not draw attention to myself. Hence, why I lean towards cameras that look like a DSLR. Currently, I'm shooting with the Sony FX30. Which I really like. But, I'm looking at where I want to go next if I want to level UP my camera. While the FX6 seems like a natural choice, I think the C70 is even better especially because of that DSLR-like form factor. I could probably shoot most anywhere with the C70 and not draw a lot of attention because of its form factor. This video was perfect, because it shows in a very easy to understand way of how to expose CLog2. And you kept the video to just about 10 minutes. An impressive feat given how long most videos are that explain how to expose Log footage with other cameras. Thanks for keeping it short, yet clear.
Incredibly valuable!! The KZread algorithm did right by me with this one lol. Great work! Thank you for sharing you knowledge.

Hey, thanks for the video. I was a little confused about the ISO values though. I would always try to keep it at 800 or above and never go higher. I often also find myself going to 2 Stops of ND more and raising the ISO before going below 800. But I guess it makes no difference when you're indoor with no highlights. One question: Why not use false color for everything?
Good stuff.

Yo big tips thank you so much . I always been sucky at camera stuff ! Any tips for like going from OUTside to IN and properly doing that auto iso??
I feel like you could definitely push it to 1600 iso for high contrast scenes considering how clean the C70 is. Get a more Alexa like highlight/shadow distribution.
Hey man great videos. Would love to hear your thoughts on cine lenses VS auto lenses in terms of on-set workflow. Do you do run and gun style shoots pulling focus yourself or is that just too tricky?
@GriffinConway
3 жыл бұрын
Check this video out that I made: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m3mkq8d9cdbenrA.html I would say it depends on the project. 75% of the time if I’m running cinema lenses I have a focus puller or we are just doing locked off shots. Sometimes I will pull manually for run n gun. That works fine as well too. But it depends on the job and if I feel it’s worth it to give up autofocus or not.
Great stuff as always! I rented C70s last month for a TEDx shoot, but still using a 1D X Mark II here. I commonly shoot 400 ISO on it, but is ISO 800 better for that camera in bright scenes as well?

Hello Griffin and community! I got both R5 and C-70 and I really like the form factor of R5 ... I'm be really curious about test with a R5 WITH ninja V vs C-70 ? I don't know if i is because I have the canon speed booster with EF glass, but the auto focus on C-70 is really not good for me and i'm shooting 50% on a gimbal so, If you made a video with all the good an cons of this two setup, it will be really interesting for me an for sure , for your community. Thank for all your content I really appreciate !
Hi Griffin, could you show us how you set up your Ninja V? I’m struggling because there’s such a difference with the built-in screen, and there seems to be a known issue with colour shift and Cinema Gamut over HDMI. Thanks!!
Hey great video I have one quick question as far as exposure working with a C 70 how do you achieve a softer image Image instead of the digitize hard video look that I keep getting?
Awesome video! Sorry if I have missed it but how exactly are you powering the Ninja here? What is the dummy battery plugged into? Thanks!
Quick and simple and straight to the point! Well done! Quick question I have both set ups the c70 and Nina V Did you just use your ninja V just purely as an external monitor or do you like to shoot the prores raw format on the ninja V as well? I saw a different video where someone else compared and saw the difference was negligible and it better to shoot on the native XF-AVC via SD card Was curious on your thoughts on this ? Or if you ever tried comparing the two yourself?

Hi Griffin, do you not use CLog 3?
Really helpful videos. I finally got the camera with the 24-105 RF lens. What do you think is the highest usable iso in low light? 1,600? for professional work. When mainly doing events. I know the 24-70 RF would serve me better as it's f2.8, but it is £1,000+ more in the UK for it. Or would you recommend selling the RF lens and getting the EF 24-105 with the speed booster? I'm just worried the autofocus and stabilization would not be as good.

get rf glass 2.8 with i.s.
Hi Griffin, how do you set the slow shutter below 1/15 sec? I choose "slow" in "shutter mode" but I can't go below 1/15. I can only increase to 1/30.
what is your recommended mic with the C70. I have a NTG5 3.5mm and I have tried using it on Line setting on C70 as well as Mic with Phantom power. Can't get the levels to be stable they peak and blow out even using the limiter. Then if I have it to low its just to low and have to raise a lot in post.
Griffin dude I feel like I’m doing everything by the book and if it helps I’m also using your LUTs but the CLog 2 shots I’m getting from the C70 are always garbage compared to the standard profile, I don’t have a clue what I could be doing wrong unfortunately, practice makes perfect so could you guess if there’s something I could be specifically doing wrong here that will at least get it on the right track!
