Canon C200 8bit Test Footage

This camera is capable of capture of 4K50 in 12 bit RAW internally. This time i wanted to test the 8 bit recording. It grades really well from Clog3 and doesn't fall apart like any other 8 bit log profile would.

I love the image quality in this video. It looks very good and the colors are great, if you like Canon colors. Great job!

Next time I'll try it witch raw and arri Alexa LUT. I've seen that after adding a touch of saturation and contrast they look almost indistinguishable.

Tempted to get a C200 as the prices are coming down quite a bit, I was thinking of getting a used C300 Mk3 but the price difference is pretty huge. I do a lot of corporate work with quick turn arounds and nothing hugely demanding, so might be worth picking one up. Do you find the autofocus good for today’s standards? I currently use the GH6 and GH5S but would like a camera that has decent autofocus for interviews

I got mine just to play around with it as I fell in love with the concept of shooting raw internally. In the end this wasn’t a camera for me. If you’re looking for a camera with a good af and quick turnaround time id probably look elsewhere. The af is good for shooting people in an interview setting as you have face only mode that will not hunt for anything else. Other than that for shooting my pointless videos it was only good. As for quick turnaround you will be investing in this big and capable raw shooting machine to probably end up shooting video in 8 bit codes. 12 bit raw will not be practical and the camera has nothing in between. Honestly depending on your budget I would go for something like fx3, a7IV, a6700 or fx30. Possibly a LUMIX s5II. If you have a lot of decent glass for you gh5/gh6 it would be worth considering the g9II. I would love to get my hands on one of them. I still sometimes prefer the image of m43 sensors. That’s why I own a pocket 4K along my full frame zv-e1. C200 will definitively get you kudos for looking professional without it having to be rigged up.

@@LiveMyJourneyTom Thanks for the reply! In terms of the autofocus I would probably only use it when I’m interviewing to the side of the camera and can’t guarantee the subject not moving. The rest would be in manual focus like I’ve been doing with my other cameras. Reason why I’m looking into Canon is I’ve got a lot of super 35 EF lenses like the Sigma 18-35, 50-100 and tokina 11-16, so would be a bit more practical to get something with a ef mount. Might be worth getting one just to play around and selling it if not, it’s not a huge investment really in terms of price 😅

@98JamesNixon I don’t see why you shouldn’t try it. I’ve bought one and sold it on with a healthy profit. Thing with EF lenses is that they are so universally adaptable that they’ll work well with most systems. I know they’ll work great with sigma adapter on lumix full frame and I’ve been testing 7artisan adapter with my Sony recently with some great results (Sigma 18-35 video on my channel for example). The face AF is rock solid for interview setting. All I’m saying is that af isn’t on par with likes of Sony in more run and gun setting. The 8 bit output from this camera is insanely good. It grades like no other 8 bit I’ve seen before.

@@LiveMyJourneyTom Yes definitely some great points! I would still keep my three LUMIX cameras (GH6, GH5S and GH5) for the more run and gun stuff I do. Just like the idea of having a camera where the XLR’s, ND filters etc are all built in so I don’t have to worry about loads of accessories like I do on my other camera. The 8 bit footage doesn’t really bother me much either if it holds up ok to grading, a lot of stuff I shoot is for other clients to edit as well so smaller file sizes are also a plus for sending. Might get the c200 just to hold me off for the time being and then upgrade to a newer cinema camera like a c300 mk3 or c70 when the prices come down more

@98JamesNixon if not for the af I would suggest going for the Blackmagic 6K Pro. You also get the XLR and built in NDs but you also get a lot more manageable RAW in 12 bit with varied levels of compression and ProRes for quick turnaround stuff. The dynamic range on paper is better on the C200 but in reality it’s just nowhere near bmpcc. On canon you literally can’t pull any info from the shadows. If you want AF for you non af reliable cameras it’s worth looking at the PDMovie Air 3 Smart follow focus system. It has a built in LiDAR giving you accurate AF even with manual lenses.
